Well 5 years ago I swore I'd never join a social network and thought that only the socially awkward/incapacitated would join. And here I am 5 years later as a loyal facebook user   .

HOWEVER, my main reason I use it is because all of my close friends (that I actually DO know in real life) are over a thousand miles away. So it is a really good way to keep in touch for me. And I don't play those idiotic games like farmville, nor do I have 590344 friends (anybody with over 300 probably just randomly adds people, and I've found consistently that any girl with over 700 is a whore). I limit my friends list to people I actually know in real life (about 150ish).

Facebook is probably your best bet, even if all your friends are in the same town as you, its a good way to make plans, share pictures, etc etc

I used to have a myspace account but that didn't last long. Myspace is pretty crappy IMO and filled with pot-heads, spammers, random hookers that pester you, and such. It is considered the "digital ghetto" after all.

Twitter? Meh, don't have one, and seems stupid IMO unless you're a company/celebrity advertising crap. The Facebook status feature serves the same purpose.

You may also consider LinkedIn as a professional networking tool.

LinkedIn is an excellent tool! I found my new job on LinkedIn, and I also found the manager who would be interviewing me and established that we had common interests. Building a complete profile on LinkedIn takes time, but I think it's well worth it!

Answer to the title : no.

I'm not part of any and don't plan too, they seem too addictive and pointless at the same time for my taste.

YMMV

One more thing, Varig.

Social media sites are high-profile operations and some are frequently targeted by spammers, identity thieves, and just general malcontents.

I agree with the above positive comments re LinkedIn.

If you have friends you like to communicate with, you're better off setting up web cams or simply emailing. Also, there are numerous sites which will let you host videos and photos if you want to share them.

Twitter is a great tool if you are interested in like celebrities or famous people in general and their lifestyles. Also a good news tool.
Facebook is awesome to connect with old friends and share pics and talk.
Myspace is just crap lol.
I'd say definitely join facebook. Twitter is only for a certain kind of person and Myspace is just plain ol' creepy.

MySpace if you like being a teen and pimping up your profile. I don't like it at all and wonder why I even opened one in the first place.

Twitter if you just want to tell people what you are doing.

Facebook if you want Twitter and MySpace combined without the hassle of pimping up profiles. I'm an avid Facebook user and wonder how I got by without it.

LinkedIn if you wish for a more professional profile.

I like Facebook, because I have found friends and they have found me, that I have not seen in 25 yrs. And it is more adult oriented. I think of Facebook as the new White Pages (Phonebook).

I reluctantly joined Facebook just to look at some photos that a friend had posted there.

Within 24 hours I heard from 3 "undesireables" from my past. People that I never wanted to hear from again.

There are a lot of nut jobs out there, and most of them live on the internet...

Is it true that Facebook owns the copyright to any of our posted pictures?

I have always hesitated to post any pictures just because of this. Also others can easily "steal" our pictures, stories, and many other things. I bet writers are on FB a lot looking for new materials....

Same here.

Again, same here.

Twitter can be great for both of the above, but mostly I "follow" news & sports stuff. For me, it's a kind of clearinghouse for current events & scores.

My advice:

Facebook: For fun.

Linkedin: Professional use only

Twitter: For keeping up with news & events.

One last thought: Don't be one of those people who mix all three together...

Only join one if you really want to use it for yourself though. Yes it's great for keeping in touch with people and sharing stories and photos but only if thats the way you want to do it. And also make sure you make your profile safe so that only the people you want to see your profile and photos you're in can do so!!

I think they removed that clause. What happens is that Facebook saves a copy of your pictures so if you delete it, they will still keep it. However, I think people are blowing this out of proportion. What I think is that in case you decide to close your account and then open it again, the pictures will be there waiting for you. I would be more concerned if I uploaded creative works, especially when a watermark won't be any good.

Also, if you join Facebook, I would put privacy settings to the maximum. A friend of mine had his picture stolen by another guy and, while he used his name, he used my friend's picture as his profile picture...
