BP Faking Spill Photos

Thu Jul 22, 2010 3:16 pm

It looks like there are some pretty stupid folks at BP. They're getting caught doctoring photos.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn.../AR2010072105833.html?hpid=topnews

While I have a lot of respect for the honest engineers and rig workers at BP the company itself has been the Dumb & Dumber of the corporate world this year. How many fake photos will end up in the hands of trial lawyers and in the faces of members of the jury.

From Day One of the spill BP should ahve had a team working with local people to absolutely minimize the losses of people living in that area. That team should also have been asked permission to release these faked photos so someone could have been told to stick them where the sun doesn't shine.

Instead the company appears to have relied on lawyers and idiots with a camera and Photoshop.

Bring on the trials as soon as possible!

I read an article last night in Business Week (I think) on this. From the photos they describe they are simply making them better looking. Much like someone would do in Photoshop to get photos on this website. I could see if they were doctoring images to show better conditions, etc than are out there. But I dont see anything wrong with what they did. The same thing happens every day in the photography industry.

I think it's blowing it out of all proportion. The subject of the images are genuine, they have been modified to enhance them not completely fabricated. All that's happened in one case is the screen has been selected and the contrast changed - you don't even need to read the picture caption to know what has been done.

If you just look at that helicopter shot for one second you could tell its not really in flight. I could tell when I first saw it. Not to mention the pilots don't look like they're doing a thing.

Of course it's not, its plainly obvious that the helo is on the landing pad of a vessel. Who mentioned anything about it being in the air?????

It was a fake shot today, PR bull and they got caught.

The problem is that every time BP gets caught in something like this they simply add to the trial lawyer's bag of evidence. It is totally dumb. Right now BP needs to be totally honest and all we get is PR crap.

Just because it was put in Photoshop doesnt make it fake.

And may I present you Exhibit A- this copy of Photoshop CS3. Give it a rest. They areny lying with these images.

Lee, the edited photo made it seem like the chopper was in the air. What they did was crop it so the images in the background would come in more clear. Thus it also made it look like the chopper was in the air flying over the area

Regarding the helicopter... that seems like a bizarre thing to photoshop. Was it that hard to take a picture while the helicopter was in the air, or was it that hard to get the same effect elsewhere? Maybe there's something here which I don't get.

As far as the computer screens, honestly, I wholly understand the reasons for photoshoping -- when it comes to electronics, cameras often don't capture like you want it to. While the photos may have been chopped, I'm guessing what it looked like in real life was closer to the photoshop than it was to the photo.

But, that's my measely two cents...

Cheers,

The problem here, as I understand it, is that the screens were shopped to show live feeds monitoring the well, instead of the raw data (Excel spreadsheets?) that was present in real life.

Not a biggie, but still somewhat deceptive.

BP clearly has an overactive PR/Communications department.

When I read the title I thought they were digitally minimizing the extent of the spill, and turns out they only did some minor photo shopping to make things clearer or make pictures more appropriate/geared towards a press release and what have you not.

Much ado about nothing IMO

Oh dear God.

He also adjusted colors and contrast so that the interior of the helicopter was brighter, Dean said.

Hmm, so any photograph submitted to A.net in recent history must be fake, right? Maybe the A380 doesn't even exist because after all, if you change the contrast - it must be a fake photo!

Damn. I've been duped this whole time.

Regarding the command center photo:
I really don't see the huge issue with pasting an image into a blank screen. Now, if they pasted something over a monitor that was showing a TV show or a movie, that is something else. But a blank screen? Come on man, you're grasping at straws to make BP look evil here. But its ok, because we all know oil is evil anyways.

The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.

Yeah I thought so too. What's wrong with what they did? The only thing I see wrong is shoddy photoshop work, which, I never would have been able to tell. It's not like they colored all of the oil into watery colors to make it look like there's not a lot of oil...
Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)
