Update: What's Up With The QE2 Cruise Ship Now?

Sat Jul 24, 2010 10:51 am

What's up with the QE2 cruise ship now? Willl she be sold again? Wonder if the administrators can overturn the decision that she cannot pick passengers? Will she join another cruise company or even rejoin Cunard?

RE: Update: What's Up With The QE2 Cruise Ship Now?

When Cunard-ival sold the Ship to Nakheel/Dubai World, there was a no resale clause in the contract. One offer came for purchasing the ship. The offer suspected to be coming from the Alang scrap yard got turned down. This was the only offer so far.

The Ship's situation: The QE2, former Queen of the Seas, is still sitting at Port Rashid all the way at the end of the Passenger Cruise Terminal pier. Seems they are just happy to let her sit there.

She was put in dry dock last November for a complete repaint job and full inspection as there was a (failed) plan to send her to Cape Town as a hotel during the Football World Cup. There is a crew of about 25 people under command of VShips taking care of her. They are not living on the ship but in hotels in the city.

No one can get access on board unless you are a prospective sponsor of some sort or a Dubai VVIP or mega-yacht owner with a plan/project for the Ship.

There was some mysterious mess on the starboard quarter since last June; some black traces probably from soot. It was soot, but not from the funnel ( the prevailing wind drifts off to the port quarter ); it came from the quayside generators supplementing the air conditioning. During last week it has been cleaned of and QE2 is now in sparkling showroom condition once again.

You can see the QE2 on this link to a live Dubai webcam.

Click on the picture, it will then open an enlargable version in a new window by another click on the picture again to enlarge.

Scroll all the way up to the right side and all the way to the left and you will get a view of the Ship.

Will she ever cruise for Cunard or another company like the SS Norway?

Not any chance I am afraid... not taking passengers.

She needs a engine overhaul. They need the engines operational to keep the aircon on... There is a limit to how far they can run them without overhaul.

To move her they must have 8 of the 9 engines in certificate because Lloyds require her to be capable of operating with one engine room out of action. So right now they can't move her except by tow anyway.

Also, as of the 1st July she was automatically banned from most waters, including Europe and the USA, because her sewage system does not meet the new standards which came into force on that date. This is a far bigger problem than SOLAS.

What about river cruises or SS Norway style of cruising?

What would have happened if the Dubai government didn't bid for QE2 back then? The ship might still be in service with Cunard maybe?

The same as asking if Concorde would still be in service would the fatal crash not have happened exactly 10 years ago today.

These are all useless questions that lead to nowhere.

If you love the QE2 and want to get a close up view from the pier you can take one of the Costa cruise ships that dock in Dubai. Some of them stay 24 hours, sometimes longer, during the Winter season.

This is what you get.

or maybe even this if you are lucky

This is the only way.

We miss her badly, our Queen of the Seas, just as badly as we miss Concorde, Queen of the Skies.

I am not sure the Sheikhs would sell her to the scrapyard. The place in Alang made an offer. It got turned down.

There is probably enough money in the UAE to keep her "as is" for another number of years until maybe they find a way to turn her into a viable project. The Sheikhs have got a lot of pride.

She will probably end up like the SS United States and rot at her pier for decades before someone puts her out of her misery.

Well, what if she's converted into a floating hotel? Just a moderate overhaul and viola! Heck, if Qatar could house the largest, biggest ship in the world as a floating storage unit, I'm sure Dubai could house a former cruise ship.

The Ship will not be scrapped. She will stay in Dubai.

Now official.

Hope floats, QE2 not headed to the scrapyard
Options being considered for QE2, none of which involves her leaving Dubai

A company spokesperson for Istithmar told XPRESS: "There are a number of options being considered for QE2, none of which involves her leaving Dubai."

Cost of QE2 maintenance is peanuts for a place like Dubai.
Nice picture of the Ship with the EK 380 flyover. Brings back memories of a wonderful time at sea!

I think you are thinking about Carol Marlow who was President & Managing Director. She's now MD at P&O Cruises.

Is P and O cruises owned by Carnival Group? Why did she switch?

You will have to ask her.
Maybe a better career opportunity. Maybe a personal choice.

Was SS France a top high end cruise at that time? How exclusive/expensive/jhigh class was it? I know SS Norway was an ordinary cruise......
