How Long Is Your Country/State?

Sat Jul 31, 2010 2:30 pm

To get the train to Scotland from London takes about 4-5 hours which i think is long enough. But the UK is only a very average (median) or small (mean) country which gives the impression that transport in larger countries must be gargantuan. Really though, this is deceptive as the UK is fairly long and thin. For example, even though France is over twice the size of the UK by area, it's only slightly longer than the UK.

Boredom/OCD led me to calculate length for the following countries...

UK - Length ~510nm Area - 219,000km^2
France - Length: ~564nm Area: 551,695km^2
Russia - Length: ~4183nm Area: 17,098,242km^2
USA - Length: 2434nm Area: 8,080,4645km^2

So if you are as bored as me, work out your own Country or State.

There's one rule however: It has to be continuous landmass and territory unless they're joined by a bridge or tunnel or are less than 10nm apart. So Hokkaidō would count for Japan, but Alaska or Hawaii wouldn't count for USA.

Your tools...

GCM
Google Maps
List of countries by area

The best bet is to pick 2 distant airport (ie MIA-SEA = 2367nm), find out the range, then do a range scan on each city (2367nm@SEA) to see if there's anywhere else further away.

Have fun!

In a somewhat different factor, but according to an afver from the Dutch Airforce a while back the Netherlands is 5 minutes wide and 8 minutes long.... in an F-16 that is.

Denmark from the eastern most point of Bornholm to western Jutland is about 292 miles according to Google Earth or 470 kilometers which is actually quite a lot I think.

43,094 km2 or 0.03% of the total landmass of the earth

This is without Greenland though.

You've done the UK for me, but boredom/OCD led me to try to find the longest great circle routes between capital cities a while back. Taipai to Asuncion (Paraguay) was the longest I could find.

Food for thought, the state of Texas is larger by area than France.

I generally think of the entirety of Europe and the UK as close to the size of the US. That is just a swag without crunching the numbers.

Yes that's correct, can we have some of it back please?

Anyway, Texas is 700nm long from southeast to northwest. Which is slightly further than east to west.

Consider this, in order for me to travel from New York to Florida, it's usually a 3 hour flight. Most flights in all of Europe doesn't take that long. The U.S. is a very large country and I often wonder how weird it is to live in a small country like England.

It's probably not that different. I have driven to all corners of the UK and as a humble human being capable of roughly 3mph or in my car an average of 60mph, i still feel that the UK is pretty huge. Bigger places are simply massive, supermassive and hypermassive. The jet age has made the world feel smaller, but it's still the same size.

For comparison the UK is similar in population density to Maryland or Connecticut. Of course with the EU we can in theory live and work where we like, but the language barrier will always make that very difficult in practise.

Is length the N-S or the longest? Whatever the state in Aus with the longest extent E to W is Tasmania.

Yes, it is a bit of a trick. The Sub Antarctic Islands that are part of Aus are assigned to Aus are part of Tasmania. I will have to check to figure out what they are, but it is a heck of a long way, thousands of kms.

Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve

The Australian Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) lies in a remote and stormy part of the globe, near the conspicuous meeting-point of Antarctic and temperate ocean waters. The islands were unknown to humanity until the 19th century. HIMI is an external territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean at around 53° 05' S and 73° 30' E. It lies about 1500 km north of Antarctica and over 4000 km south-west of Australia.

Location: 54°30' S 158°57' E

Macquarie Island is a subantarctic island located in the Southern Ocean, approximately half way between Australia and Antarctica.

So from 73 E to 158 nearly 159 E. Bit of a "hole" in between! But it does mean "we" have to go fishing in those seas for dumb yachts persons whose yachts fall over while traversing the furious fifties.

Now Canada is big...

Total area 9,984,670 km2 (3,854,085 sq mi)

The province of BC alone is bigger than the UK

944,735 square kilometres (364,800 sq mi)

Its very hard to measure, but from Victoria to Stewart on the AK border is about 600 miles. From Tofino on the west coast of the island to Cranbrook near the AB border is about 450 miles.

True. It's a matter of definition though. You have to cross Swedish borders to go to Bornholm, but Skåne used to be danish anyway though

I live in Jersey, which is over eight miles east to west and five, north to south. I haven't driven from one side of the island to the other; you need to break a journey like this:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&tab=wl&q=jersey

I live towards the north of the island, in the outskirts of the metropolis of St. John. It usually takes me around 20-25 minutes to get into work, in the centre of St. Helier. The airport is about five miles from St. Helier. To put that in perspetive, it's roughly the distance from the terminal at AMS to the most distant runway (36L).

My homeland is, of course, Ireland, which is around 280 miles N to S, or 150 miles, east to west.

The province of Mendoza is about 500 kilometers from north to south, and about 250-275 kilometers east to west. 148,000 sqKm, slightly bigger than England, only 1.8 million people.

As for Argentina, all I know is that from to the shores of the Beagle Channel to La Quiaca in the middle of the South American Puna at Bolivian border is about 5,400 kilometers (by road). By plane, it takes about 6 hours and change to fly from Iguazu Falls Regional Airport to Ushuaia International.

I did CEC-YUM (I know Yuma is in Arizona, but it is on the border; the farthest points I could think of) and Great Circle Mapper says 822nm. I did STS-TVL (Santa Rosa-South Lake Tahoe) and came up with 155NM, but I am sure it is less going straight east/west across other parts of California. I don't know if SFO would be closer to the coast than STS.

My former home state of Oregon is interesting since there is that little uptick in the northwest corner. Astoria to Brookings is 283nm but The Dalles to Klamath Falls is 241nm. Ontario to Florence is 354nm and farthest points across the state are Brookings-Joseph at 419nm, Brookings-Enterprise 421nm, and Astoria-McDermott 420nm.

What a way to spend a Saturday....

The longest measureable distance in Canada, would be from the Alaska (USA) Yukon Territories (Canada) border to the city of St. John's Newfoundland. That distance, totally within the country is 5490 kilometers. That's sort of like going from London UK all the way to the middle of AFGHANISTAN!!!! The only country that would have a longer measurement would be Russia, which from St. Petersberg to the bottom of the Kamchatka Penninsula is about 6800 km.

According to the CIA World Fact Book South Africa has an area of 1,219,090 square km. 25th largest in the world.

As it isn't square it is tricky to decide length, but a road trip from the northern border with Zimbabwe to Cape Point is 1,994 km and from Alexander Bay in the west to Kosi Bay in the east is 1,996 km (so much for not being square!)
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Length of mainland Norway is 1752 Km ( from Lindesnes to Kinnarodden )

Coastline (mainland only ) without fjords and coves: 2650 Km

Coastline (mainland only ) with fjords and coves: 25148 Km

Norway: 323,802 Km2 ( Only mainland, not territories such as Svalbard, Jan Mayen, Bovet island, Peter I.S Island and Queen Maud land )

Norway also controls a sea area that is 7 times larger than the mainland of Norway...

Norway: 4.8 million people

In comparison the United Kingdom is

UK: 242,900 Km2 in area

and

UK: 60 million people

Lot of space in Norway....

Australia is 3734km (2321 miles) from DRW to HBA. All of New Zealand is closer to HBA than most of northern Australia.

Most of us live in or close to cities of 1 million or more, so they are! BUT did you look between those large cities. From CNS to ADL via the coast there are people and things, also in the South West of WA. Outside that there is not much, particularly not much water, which means there is not a lot of anything really. I've just flown SEA-MSP-LGA & train to BOS, compared to Australia you are wall to wall people, ALL the way across (all that water!!!!!!!). I've also recently flown CDG-HEL and it's even more so!
