Fri Aug 20, 2010 4:54 am

well what would be "the" country were you would like to live, beside your current country?

Iceland. I love the northern climates, my mother lives in Alaska, I love snow, hot blonde women, volcanoes, and with the exception of high food prices...I just would love to live there. Other candidates..Nepal, New Zealand, Chile, and after visiting for more than 3 years Canada. But it would have to be the maritimes so I could fish and live with people that speak English completely unrecognizable but make great beer.

I think I'd be happy in Canada. Might change my mind after spending a winter or two there though.

I could see myself in the UK as well.

Have done time in both Thailand and Japan....would be very interested in Belize, Colombia (if it were ever safe for Americans again), Brasil, Switzerland, and New Zealand.

But just a few weeks in - already hard to imagine wanting to leave Hawai'i permanently.

It no more unsafe (or safe) for Americans than it is for anyone else, including locals.
Lots of Americans living here.

Not to say it's a safety heaven though, but it's doable.

I've done Thailand and Colombia... if I move I'd like it to be somewhere in Europe, maybe UK.

Get away from it all yet with a possibility of flying out whenever.
Also it has to be a place where I can retain all my benefits.
Internet connection and fluent language use on site are a must.

French Pacific Islands with a mild climate.
My first vote goes to the Austral Islands. Rurutu or Tubuai.
Moorea would be my second choice. A short ferry ride to Papeete.

New Caledonia is another possibility. It is relatively close to Auckland.
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

Austria because of the scenery and the food, the Dominican Republic for the people and the weather, and the general niceness of it, and England because it is the greatest country in the world to live, but I already live there so all is well.

Canada or England. I've never been to the UK but I'd like to at least visit and make up my mind. I've been to Canada twice and I absolutely love it there. I definitely want to move there one day when I can afford to.

Australia if they did away with all those scary animals. No, I'm not talking about the Koala...

South Africa if it got a little bit safer.

There are a couple of other nice countries (or regions within certain countries) I can think of but frankly The Netherlands is not a bad country at all to live in. Just needs a bit more sunshine.

I'd love to find a place where the temperature never went above 75 or below 25. I'd like all 4 seasons but not too much summer or winter.

I live in the US and have lived in South Korea, Canada and Greece too. I've also spent a lot of time in Brazil. If I would choose another country to live in, it would be any of these: UK, Australia, Singapore, Brazil (only if I was extremely rich) and Japan (not for a long, long time, though).

I would like to live in Europe for a time (nowhere in particular, but perhaps in a wine growing region for a time and another time in Scandinavia), and also for a time somewhere in western North America... as well as some little town in Central Mexico.

But just based on the social and economic news coming out of those regions and the rest of the world, to be honest, there is no place like Argentina right now.

I am quite happy where I am but would not mind having a second "home" away from home and spend late October through March there to escape the dark, cold and wet winters we get over here, which kill me.
Some place with a sea, mountains and warm but not too hot climate. Something like Madeira, Gran Canaria or Kauai.

Pfth, replace Düsseldorf, Königsallee with Hamburg, Jungfernstieg and Porsche with Maserati ....

The place I have enjoyed living the most so far was Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin, followed by Vienna.

But I could imagine living in Norway, Sweden, the U.S., Italy or on an island with palms and turquoise water, too.

I believe you and I arrived there around the same time--I moved into Prenz'lberg as a student in 1996, left in '97 with the intention of moving back in a year, but ended up staying in the US instead. I know it's nothing like it was then, but I still miss the place!

Nah, Dusseldorf wins that contest hands down...and seriously, a Maserati over a classic Porsche?

Prenzlauer Berg must have been an awesome experience, have only been there once but would love to go back!

As for the island with palms and turquoise water...well, I am from Puerto Rico so I lived in such a place for the first 20 years of my life...so why am I still living in Washington DC?

I have lived on 4 continents, traveled to all 7, and currently live in NYC.

The only place I have been that felt like "home" from the first moment was London (UK), though I never lived there. Hard to explain.

I would also consider (in no particular order) Germany, the Czech Republic, Argentina, Panama, New Zealand, Australia, and Namibia.

I am American and currently living in the Netherlands. The Netherlands is a great place to live as an expat! Am currently deciding whether to stay longer or return to the US when my contract is up. I think that Hong Kong or Singapore would be a nice next stop - both cities are truly and east vs. west mix, centrally located for travel around the region, and have large expat communities.

Good thread!

My basic requirements - must be near an international airport, a Borders bookstore and people who speak English. (like NYC)

Also, no long, cold winters, must be in the temperate zone. (Bangalore has world's best weather)

Cleanliness in public spaces ( Unlike Bangalore!).

Not too crazy about friendly people - can get annoying. (prefer genuineness).

Must be able to afford household help.

Must be boater friendly. (Port?)

Respect for brains and culture ( Canada?).

Is there a place like that?
