Russia In 1910...

Sun Aug 22, 2010 10:52 pm

Just came across these absolutely amazing photos of Russia from 1909-1910. 100 years ago, yet through some sort of filtering the photographer managed to get the shots in near-true color, making these photos look far more recent than anything until maybe the 1950s. Great stuff, and a very lifelike window into a very different age.

Thanks so much for sharing these photo's. It's interesting but I find when I look at old photo's I tend to imagine the world back then really was black and white or devoid of intense colour. These photo's help to show that colour then was as it is today.

Last year I spent a great deal of time in Russia - travelling from east to west on the Trans-Siberia Railway. It is an amazing country with so much history and cultures. And the beauty of the country is outstanding.

Cheers!

Very nice photos, but I doubt it was done through filtering, as we think of camera filters today. Color photography was experimented with since the 1840s and actually achieved in 1861. The first commercial color photographic equipment became available in 1898, to anyone with the money to buy it.

Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky took around 3500 negatives for his chronicle of the Russian Empire from 1909 to 1915, sponsored by the Czar. He was truly a man ahead of his time when it came to color photography.

Amazing photographs, and, as others have already said, excellent quality for being 100 years old.

I questioned it, but then looked more closely - the shots where there is movement (class of kids, flowing stream) all show separation in the RGB....

Also, if you go to the Library of Congress website where more of these photos are displayed, it is quite clear from looking at the edges of the lower quality pictures that colored filters were employed.

A link to his collection. Very inpressive stuff, hard to believe it's as old as it really is.
