F1 2010: Belgian Grand Prix-SPA!

Mon Aug 23, 2010 8:13 pm

We're back from our break and on to one of (if not thee) best circuits of the year

Spa is iconic for its random weather, undulating terrain, and fantastic corners.

A lap with Kimi Raikkonen:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4p2ACbYKmfE

In F1 News:

Yamamoto will start again for HRT alongside Senna
Schumacher will start with a 10 place grid penalty
Ferrari scheduled for WMSC hearing on September 7 regarding events at Hockenheim

Here's hoping that Vettel, Alonso and Massa take each other out at first corner, and no cheating from Kimi....

I really want Lewis to win this one. It would be really deserved after being (wrongly IMO) stripped of his victory in 2008

It's a good thing he ended up winning the championship, otherwise that race would be much more infamous. I think the Mclaren will be stronger here than at Budapest, but you'd be crazy to bet against a Red Bull for pole and Alonso challenging for the win. I think it'll end up being 1. Alonso 2. Webber 3. Massa 4. Hamilton 5. Button 6. Sutil or Kubica, with Vettel on pole yet losing the race once again to make me even happier

Thank you for opening the Spa GP thread Blue Elephant.

Says Hammy:

"We're all really looking forward to getting back into the title fight," said Hamilton. "I'll be going flat out to get us back in the hunt in Belgium.

"The break gave us some valuable thinking time to consider how to improve our car for the remainder of the season," Hamilton added.

"We are not only optimistic of better results but also of stronger pace for the rest of the year.

"I head to Spa off the back of a disappointing non finish in Hungary. We've investigated the causes and are confident it won't happen again.

"Spa is on one of the great Formula 1 tracks and one I'd really love to win."

Thanks for opening the thread.
Finally it's back to racing.

So was it a strategic move by Heidfeld to apply and become test driver for Pirelli as there might be teams that wants him due to the knowledge he will have for next season?
For his sake I hope so. He might not be WDC material, but he's consistent, and in the wet he shines!
When in doubt, flat out!

Renault should introduce their F-Duct system. Hopefully they will be able to manage a better position than 6th.

I didn't think about this...great point. I'm sure that it would help him I hope he gets a seat...I could see him in a Force India or Sauber next year.

I'm intrigued about the McLaren silence over hte last few weeks, both Button and Hamilton seem to optimistic for the coming weekend (as do Red Bull and Ferrari) so I'm wondering if the have something up their sleeve.

I sure hope they do.

Or in a Renault even? Although, if Petrov continues to drive as he did in the last race, he might keep his seat. I think the F-duct will be what Renault needs for a track like Spa.
Is it actually Mclaren who currently has the straight line top speed?
When in doubt, flat out!

I thought of this, but Kubica isn't going anywhere and I don't think Kubica/Heidfeld had the greatest working relationship

No Swiss Banker for Sauber

Tuesday 24 August 2010 - 14h42, by GMM

UBS chief executive Oswald Grubel reportedly wanted to take the sponsorship of the Swiss bank to a formula one team.

Grubel, who previously brought Credit Suisse into the sport with Sauber, was eyeing a similar deal for UBS now that he is in charge of the Zurich based global financial services company.

But according to Switzerland’s Blick newspaper, the UBS board voted against the plan, agreeing instead to become a sponsor of the entire sport in a deal that was announced on Monday.

That was quite obvious in the BMW years, apart from the Canada GP.

I'm counting on this alos, however all the teams will have improvements.

Bad news for that team, I hope they manage to put together a good sponsorship package for next year as I think they'll have a much better car then than the former BMW that they're struggling with this season (though the car is now an upper midfield contender).

Ferrari scheduled for WMSC hearing on September 7 regarding events at Hockenheim

I've read that if any further penalties are given, especially if the driver points are taken away from Alonso and Massa, Ferrari will go to the ordinary justice (is that how you say it?). I doubt this will happen, but you never know....

Talking of penalties, Victoria seems to want LH to grovel a bit more for his burn out.

The charge was "driving in a manner causing one or more of the wheels of a motor vehicle to lose traction" but it was widely reported as:

Hamilton pleaded guilty to intentionally losing control of his vehicle while in Australia for the Melbourne Grand Prix.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/08/24/2991661.htm

I am sorry, if you do it intentionally, surely it is still under control - of some sort!!! They should get the journos to grovel too. Anyway, that was NOT what he pleaded guilty to.

What you're referring to is this:

To be honest I think If Ferrari takes the FIA to court, they're asking for even more trouble. It will suggest to the world that Ferrari think they're above the rule making body...I don't think I would ever see a bigger act of arrogance in this sport than if Ferrari goes through with that.

We can now add Stefano Domenicali to the cry-baby list with Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso.

Anyway I am very happy to see them all back on the racing track. Life can get so boring without F1!

So, let me get this straight. First Ferrari say:

Quote:
"In this sort of situation, the best policy is to respect and to trust in the highest level of the sport's governing body," said a Ferrari statement.

But, if after doing that, they lose points, they'll take the FIA to court?

Keep in mind that it is all speculation on the part of an Italian newspaper at this point, so let's not jump to conclusions. Also, according to that article, "Ferrari's most likely defense would be to argue that team orders should be permitted, so long as they do not impact the races of rival teams". If they get a penalty, it should stick, but the FIA should also revoke the ban on team orders. It's silly and just another rule that teams will always have a clever or not so clever way of sidestepping.

I don't think tonights race is going to be easy for RBR. Hamilton could very well be pushing Webber early on. The McLaren, especially Hamilton has looked good, and been consistent all weekend in all types of conditions.

Happy 300th Grand Prix Rubens Barrichello!!!

From BBC site

1241: Brundle is patiently waiting for Vettel to finish speaking to German telly. Hang in there fella. He's got him. First question: "How's your car?" Vettel replies: "Blue, four black wheels on it." Brilliant.

1250: Weather update - there will be no rain for at least 30 minutes into the race. Eddie Jordan says Fernando Alonso cannot win from 10th and will be praying for rain.

Crap! Alonso is the unluckiet guy on the grid this season. First the safety car situatiot a few weeks ago, and now the rain just came out enough to make Barrichello crash into him, and when it seemed that the rain was staying, it dissapeared ...

As it seems righ now (lap 6), Alonso has lost all chances of winning the WDC

You keep saying that but 20points behind the WDC leader with 175 points still in play.. all does not seem lost yet!

yes but as it stands NOW, You have Hamilton, Webber, Vettel, Button and even Massa scoring big points while FA is scoring none.

EDIT: Take away Vettel and Button from that list!!!

EDIT II : And now Alonso is 9th? Ok, as it stands NOW, five minutes after my post, I've decided to shut up about future WDC predictions Big grin

I love Spa!!!!

How did Vettel manage to hit Jenson Button?
arrrrgghhh

BBC site

Lap 16: Unbelievable. As the rain starts to fall again, Vettel gets a run on Button coming out of Blanchimont but as he gets on the outside he veers into the Briton coming into the Bus Stop. Vettel is able to crawl into the pits to change his front wing but Button is out. The incident is under investigation. Massive moment.

Button is out of the race.  Sad

Because his ego is bigger than his ability.

It could have been a touch wet, but he should have just played it cautious and backed off. That's his problem, he doesn't know when to take the cautious option.

But just as in Turkey(without getting into the team politics) he seems to get sucked into desperate moves late in the lap... youngest race winner, yes.. very fast, undoubtedly...Championship maturity, Don't think so!!
