Dead IPod Touch

Thu Aug 26, 2010 7:20 pm

So, iTunes tells me there is an update for my iPod Touch software (version 4.02). I'm (well, was) running 4.0. I make sure all of my apps and music are synced and backed up and download the update. During the process however, an "unknown" error occurrs and I was informed the update would not be applied. Also, my iPod is now dead. Won't turn on. Holding down the sleep and home buttons down at the same time does nothing. iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod. Windows doesn't recognize the USB device.

Apple "just works," huh? My    it does.

Anyway, I've Googled around and tried the suggestions to no avail. It is still dead. Any ideas?
I lift things up and put them down.

Its because your using a windows. You need to get a mac

Try holding both buttons for 10 secs and then keep holding the power button for 5 secs after that...

My iPod Touch fell in the sink the other day, so I know how you feel...
I bought a iPhone 4 the next day though, its fantastic!

Otherwise take it to the apple store, see what they can do.

Yep -- especially if it's less than a year old. My daughter got the white screen of death -- in spite having a cracked screen from a prior accident, and a tripped water indicators (from another accident), and a dented side (from another accident), Apple replaced it for free -- said the WSOD was "their" problem. Your problem isn't WSOD -- but still they might help ...

That's why I still have my ipod touch running the 2.something software that it came with 2 years ago, I know I need to update to at least 3.0 to run certain things and use bluetooth but it's nothing that I need so badly that I'd ever bother with the update, especially when they were actually charging $10 for the updated software when I considered it.

Considering how many people find the iPod Touch to be superior to the competition and that Apple is infallible there is no alternative but to conclude that the device was bricked by user initiated error. In other words: your current predicament is your own fault.

Take the iPod Touch to the nearest Apple Store for assessment by the Genius Bar. While there, take some time to review the multitude of wonderful Apple MacBooks, iMacs, Mac Pros, and iPads available for purchase. By purchasing any one of those said devices you will negate your user initiated error of running the 4.02 update on a PC. Win win!

Remember, most people consider Macs superior to their PC counterparts because they are.

Is you IPod Touch hooked up to the computer when you are doing doing this?, I believe it will not "reset" unless it is hooked up to the computer> If you mentioned this please excuse my error (I never quite made it to the Genius Bar, the closest i managed to get to it was the moron booth)

Both connected and unconnected. One of the suggested remedies was to do that while connected and running iTunes. Didn't work either way.

That's good to know. Glad I kept the receipt. At least...I hope I still have it.

Get a Zune. It's just better.

See Apple fans, we can make blanket statements about the infinite superiority of our product with single digit marketshare without so much as a word to back it up just as well as you can. Although that's not to say I wouldn't back it up if you asked

Anyway, if buying *any* new player isn't in the cards for you, definately take it in. If you can't get it to reboot into recovery mode then it's bricked and there really isn't anything you can do yourself (at least that won't void the warranty)

Where's he been, anyway? Forgetting Apples, he's a very reasonable guy politically, and definitely one of the few people capable of expressing himself in a cohesive manner on this forum, even if it means he's promoting some of the most obnoxious and overpriced electronic gear ever invented

You're the second person to tell me that today! I actually didn't buy the Touch for the music but rather for the apps (games mostly), WiFi, and to replace (when paired with the XM SkyDock) my just about ready to die XM radio.

I wouldnt go that far. Apple refurbished products are top notch. Just as good as new, imo. Not to mention they still include a year of AppleCare just like any other device. I'm considering a refurb MacBook Pro as the configuration I want is $300 cheaper as a refurb and with the student discount.

UPDATE:
Just got back from the Apple Store. While the "unknown error" wasn't truly determined, they seem to think that "something" was corrupted during the upgrade from iOS 3 to 4 though it wasn't critical enough to cause any problems until the time for the 4.0.2 update.

It's now almost good as new. iTunes refuses to install an app on the iPod. Everything else seems to have been synced without any issues.

Then you could have held out a month for the upcoming second gen ZHD which is supposed to run Windows Phone 7 apps.....and get the best of both worlds. Plus you don't need XM with a zune pass

What does it say?

iPad-only apps will of course not work in an iPod Touch, but other than that the only reason I know of out of hand would be the app not being compatible with the iOS version in the iPod.

Yeah, I'm gunna stick with XM.

Quoting Klaus (Reply 23):

I received three warning messages. iTunes wouldn't install the app because "it's contents have changed," or "the signature file is invalid," or "the signature file is missing."

I just gave up an re-downloaded the app. Should have just tried that in the first place.
