As an American, and a total anti-communist, I nonetheless have nothing but warm feelings for the Cuban people and cannot wait to visit their beautiful island when this asinine, pointless embargo is lifted.
Dear Treasury Dept: I'm not wild about Communism either, and I have profound empathy for those Cuban patriots who spoke out against the dispicable Castro regime (and suffered for it) ...but it is 2010, and Cuba poses NO threat to the USA whatsover. Please let us go there and we will promote free-market democracy all up in the place, and help it spread (rightly or wrongly) like a weed.
Look at China..they are ostensibly a Communist dictatorship, but in actuality are now a CAPITALIST powerhouse because they chose to engage with the West...and they're an ocean away...Cuba's only 90 miles away. 99% of the time, USA people have no beef with the Cuban people!, and we could build a very productive economic partnership built on mutual interests, respect, and understanding if the ideologues on both sides are willing to compromise.
I'm not a cheerleader fot the "American Way" -- I just think 'The Embargo' is a joke in 2010, whether I disagree with the subject country's government policies or not. Engagement is the key to everything --- Cuba and the USA share too much history -- we need to be engaged.
