Looking Into Getting A New Phone...

Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:40 am

I've had my trusty ol'e SGH-A707 for almost four years now, but it's time for change. I'm looking into the Droid X and the iPhone 4 mostly, especially the iPhone line, as well as the new HTC Desire coming out shortly, but I'm open to suggestions. Basically, I want one with a good camera, web access, and is not a brick or overly massive (I would consider the Droid X to be massive). AT&T would be a plus, but I can reluctantly switch to Verizon. Thoughts?

If you like the idea of a bigger screen but find the X *too* big, I'd look at the Samsung Galaxy S series (the Captivate on at&t or Fascinate on Verizon). They're exactly the same but the carriers wanted "exclusives" and Samsung wanted to move as many as possible. It's 4 inches which is in between the standard 3.7 and larger 4.3 and is very well spec'd. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the UI they put on it (I'd prefer stock Android in almost any situation) but from what I've seen of it at least matches the look of the hardware, something HTC Sense hasn't figured out yet. While it doesn't have a great camera I'd also look at the BlackBerry Torch. I'm currently a BlackBerry user (Tour on Verizon) and while the OS has it's shortcomings, you can't beat the hardware keyboard, especially the style used on the Tour/Bold Series/Torch. OS6, which just launched with the Torch has replaced the old, terrible browser with a new webkit based one that is comparable to the ones on Android or iOS.

If you don't mind holding off a month or I would also consider looking at Windows Phone 7 when the first phones start releasing with it supposedly in October. As a Zune HD owner, I can attest to the quality of the UI on WP7 (which is based on that of the ZHD, just expanded on). It looks weird at first but you pick up on it easily, and while it'll have its own couple shortcomings at launch (copy&paste, "true" multitasking) they'll be dealt with in updates every so often, but it has quite a few features that are big selling points (at least for me) such as an integrated Zune player, games integrated with Xbox Live, and mobile Office. So far there's not much info on launch hardware but that will change soon and you can get an idea of the devices that will be available (there have been a few leaked devices from LG, HTC, and Samsung, some of which look better than others) and if you're on at&t they said they'll be the "premier carrier" for it so you'll have a good selection.

Any of the Android phones would be an excellent choice. The HTC Desire/Droid Incredible/Nexus One would be good if you find the Droid is too large but don't necessarily need the physical keyboard. ATT has the HTC Aria which runs Android and is marginally smaller and lighter than the Droid.

If you've used an iPhone before, and liked using it, and like the features - I'd say definitely get the iPhone 4. I got mine about two weeks ago, and absolutely love it. The keyboard takes a bit of getting used to, but after that, it's really nice to use. The app switching, as long as all of your apps support it (which most of them do), is really nice and fluid. I use it on a daily basis.

The Android phones are also really nice. I played with one for a little bit while waiting to get my iPhone activated at the AT&T store - definitely a competitor to the iPhone - the only issue being the price difference.

While on the subject of AT&T - never had an issue with their customer service, most of the employees in-store are really nice and helpful. I even got a text message after I had missed the call about my iPhone 4 being in. The 3G network itself is plenty fast for everyday tasks.

If I had to buy my new phone over again, can't say I would change my mind from the iPhone 4.

Sorry dude, but these are typical comments by anyone who owns the Iphone....Nothing personal here, it's just the Cult... Everyone should convert to the iphone.

Quoting NWADC9 (Thread starter):

While the iphone might be a good phone, I would suggest staying away from AT&T, for the arm and leg charges they have.
After all, the phone will do what is meant for it to do which is mainly talking and texting.
I have a physical keyboard as I use lot of messages and emails for business.
the keyboard comes handy, my phone is a touch screen as well, but always use the keyboard.
the battery life is must for me. I charge mine every 2-3 days.
It has a rating of 7 hours talk time.

Depends on what you need the phone for... for me, I could care more or less about the apps!

Glad to be an iphone-free
I have cut 4 times, and it's still short.

Psst, not sure if you actually read my post or not, but I did give props to the Android phones also - not really the typical "cult" opinion, eh?

Honestly, I think these kinds of comments are unwanted and unnecessary. NWADC9 mentioned he might want an iPhone, so I gave him the good reasons why he might want to get one. That's all. No fanboyish stuff going on there, contrary to popular belief.

NWADC9 - I might add that no matter what people in this thread say, get the phone you want, and need.

His point was whether it be Apple or any other company, no one should EVER give the "I'll never go back to [insert other brand]" because it makes you look like a tool and says to other people that you are allowing yourself to be locked in by a brand even though you have no idea what technology will be like in 6 months from now and what is oh so perfect and magical now will become old and stale by then while other phones pass it up. If you let yourself get into the mindset of automatically getting iPhone after iPhone after iPhone without even considering the alternatives you're going to miss out and only serve to perpetuate the apple cult stereotype. Obviously you aknowledged the competition, but you still gave off the vibe.

Do you really want to spend hundreds on a "smart phone"? How desperately do you need web access everywhere and all the time for that to be worth the premium over other decent phones?

I have an Iphone I love it. The tough screen is great...once you get used to it.( i came from a blackberry curve) I love the phone for the simplicity. Since I use Itunes for pretty much everything i just plug in and go.

The media player is what sold it for me. There is noting like having a movie or two on it for when i am stuck at a long crime scene or guarding someone over night at the hospital to kill the time. Plus when i am done with the movies or TV i can surf.

I tried an android phone last week as iphone 4's are hard to get up here right now. I am just to integrated with itunes and do not want to have to convert thousands of songs, tv, and movie. For me the media part is very important. I returned the android phone 4 hours later.

Interesting, but how much per month is the contract and what's included? I would definitely have considered something "smart" when my contract was up last year if all I would have paid extra was the sticker price of the phone. But the contracts are deal-breakers to me.

Ah, I see - that makes sense.

I didn't mean to have that vibe. When I made my final statement in my last post - I was referring to if I had to go and re-do my recent phone purchase, not all of my purchases in the future. If someone came out with an Android phone in the future that I considered interesting, I wouldn't disregard it just because I like and have an iPhone.

This is also why I stressed that NWADC9 get the phone he wants, not what everyone else tells him to get. There's hundreds of options for a reason - that being that everyone has different needs.

Mine is $70 per month with 450 minutes and unlimited data per month plus $.20 per text. Unlimited texting is about $20 extra, but I don't do it enough to justify that (I prefer email). All up with taxes I usually pay $80-85 per month.

I think that now that they have moved on to the Droid X you could probably score a Droid or HTC Aria for free, and the Incredible is about $80.

OK, so yours is an expensive contract so the phone company can heavily subsidise your initial purchase. For comparison, I pay €15 a month for 50 minutes and 150 texts.

For what it's worth I just saw a blurb today Verizon is planning to offer Blackberries and Android phones with a prepaid plane, but you are likely to pay a lot for the phone.

My advice would be to go to an AT&T store and try out both the iphone 4 and Samsung Captivate. You can also try the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, which has a 8.1MP camera with flash, but runs an old version of Android (1.5 IIRC). Is the HTC Desire coming out for AT&T? I have read rumors about it coming to AT&T, but have only seen it officially announced for US Cellular. You can try out the HTC Aria to get a good idea of what the Desire will be like. If those are not to your liking, then go to Verizon and try out what they got.

I upgraded my A707 the Captivate and I like it. The 5mp camera doesn't have a flash, so that may be a negative for you.

t-mobile already doing it for a while, I have been with T-mobile for close to 9 years by now, the only contract I have was the first one, since then I just buy my phones and get them unlocked right away for travelling abroad.
I have unlimited minutes ( i need that a lot) and 300 messages( not so big on messages, but I use them ) for $55 plus tax.
I bought the HTC touch Pro2 when it first came out, I have my work email setup, and the two best things I love about it are the physical keyboard, and the battery life ( almost 8 hours of talk time).
Not too big on windows mobile ( i have winmo 6.5) but the phone does what I use it for best.

I just don't talk that much on the phone and prefer using my landline or sending texts. The mobile is mostly for when I'm travelling.

The €15 a month includes a €1 phone as well, I got an LG GD510 when I renewed the contract. It was either that or a discount (€90 spread over the 24 months of the contract) which is what I should have taken since I didn't like the new phone and flogged it on eBay at a small loss.

Its the best phone Ive ever owned. Very glad I made the switch.

I almost bought another phone a couple months ago but ended up keeping an old LG phone that I put through a wash/dry clothing cycle (still works). At the time of my browsing, I was seriously torn between these two with an attitude that I'd better get the latest and "greatest" (not looking to start that debate!) or something basic.

http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/
http://www.jitterbug.com/Phones/

Though I admit to occasionally annoying my Blackberry equipped fiance and my iPhone toting friend with data requests, I'd much rather have a phone that I can beat up without worries and has a usable speaker function (more for telecons than active 2 party conversations).

Though an engineer with technical interests, I've never been a phone junkie. The first bluetooth device (of any kind) that I ever connected was done while picking up a car at BMW Welt in Munich (May 2010!). The look on my vehicle host/assistant's face was priceless. Though I was picking up the car for a friend, the assistant probably wondered how someone in a position to take delivery of a new M3 had never done such a thing.

Aha that is how "our" tax $$ are spend  ..... it is either Timis or I phone stuff  ... sorry could not resist!!!

I guess it all depends what you need/want it for...

Got the BB9700... to make calls, txt, e-mail and a little bit of surfing... no issues, love the keyboard, battery life, camera oki doki, rock solid... weak on the surfing... so I cannot wait to get the Torch ... have 32 gig storage on it... lots of music, pic's... a few apps extra nothing fancy.

I-phone? sure if I-tune/store is the limit of "your sky" ... get one , if Apple gives you what you are looking for go for it, just make sure you have a battery charger handy 24/7 ...

Android phones... wife has one from Samsung.... like it very much, she got allot of music on it, pic's, battery life very good, screen is sweet, camera so so..., apps... oki doki...

If I had to give up my BB I would switch to a Android phone because I believe "that sky limit" is higher than the Apple one ...

Though I do see your point about iTunes integration - I came from having 3 iPhones (the original, a 3G and a 3GS) in a row, and hated ATT so much that I switched. I love my Droid, but the iPhone really is a better all-in-one phone. The only things the Droid does better (IMO) are true multitasking, and true customization of the home screens with widgets - which iOS needs badly. The little multitasking bar at the bottom on iOS is annoying to use.

"Cult"?

Apple is successful because it has a focus on developing products consumers (not techies or corporations) want.

These days when Apple releases a new product everyone (including the competition) pays attention.

It's not a cult - it's a response to an intensity in design.

iOS is a controlled OS for mobile products. And Apple has done a pretty good job with their mobile roadmap. To the point where iOS is about 38% of Apple's market.

It's also worked out pretty well for developers writing apps for iOS.

phonrd are always a compromise between screen size/quality, battery life, ruggedness, weight, looks, keyboard, powerfull applications etc.

About a yr ago I bought a white E71 with 8Gb. IMO excellent compromise between powerfull applications/functionality, looks, ruggedness and battery life. Nokia came out with a E72 but hardly changed a thing. It's a continued hot seller for a reason.
