AS Sponsoring PDX MLS Team

Thu Sep 02, 2010 5:43 pm

Announced this morning at PDX, though the rumors have been out for a few days. Alaska Airlines will be the official airline of the Portland Timbers and their logo will appear on the jersey of the Timbers when they move up to MLS next season. More details here: http://www.portlandmls2011.com/2010/...ficial-mls-jersey-sponsor-airline/

Thoughts? I so hope there's a logo jet in the works. An axe would look mighty good on the tail of a 737.

Yes it would, but I still can't get over a SEA based company sponsoring the Timbers.

(To everyone else: Yeah, I know AS is big in PDX, etc.).

Or a now-ORD based airline sponsoring the Houston Dynamo (Which I already have next years season tix for!!, YAY!). Seriously though, this is awesome news for the Timbers, and I wish them luck!

At first it rubbed me the wrong way too. It's too bad there weren't many options for a Portland based company. Now, my thinking is that if a Seattle headquartered company wants to give the Timbers money so they can spend it on players to beat the Sounders, then I'm all for it. Someone needs to shut up Drew Carey and that insufferable marching band of his.

YES.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that one way to get me to come around would be to paint one in full PTFC colors, and have it rotate in/out of SEA all day long, preferably using an approach that takes it low over the city.

Same here. I don't get it. They'll sponsor the Timbers but not the Seattle Sounders (or do they?) makes no sense. It would have made sense to have QX sponsor the Timbers.

Did you know that Etihad sponsors Manchester City, Emirates sponsors both AC Milan and Arsenal?

AS sponsoring a PDX team is more logical then the above.

p.s. I think this should be in Non-Av

TBVH, I really don't care about what Etihad does. Only what AS/QX does as Washington State is my home state.

Maybe AS was late to the party, or maybe AS tried but was beaten to the punch by another local company. The Sounders' jersey sponsor is none other than Microsoft... The Sounders have quite a few high profile sponsors already, maybe AS thought they'd get more attention by being (so far) Portland's biggest...

Besides, not every team can be like FC Dallas and have the hometown airline as sponsor (AA), play in the stadium named after the hometown pizza chain (Pizza Hut) where drinks are provided by the hometown beverage company (Dr. Pepper) and the electricity is supplied by the hometown distributor (First Choice), medical needs are attended to by the hometown hospital chain (Baylor), etc... I could go on all day.

First off, Go Whitecaps! I'm really excited about going down to SEA & PDX for the big games. I think the MLS made the right choice by creating great local rivalries. Hopefully AS can come up with a supporters package for some of these games, would be a great idea.

But yeah AS probably had a lot of competition from MS for the sounders, and they probably weren't willing to pay with MS did, after all they are just an airline and not a billion dollar software company. I'm not too familiar with the Portland area but what other large companies in that area could have coughed up the money as the shirt sponsor?

Nike.

However, Adidas is the official jersey and uniform sponsor for the MLS. So I imagine there is a clause prohibiting sponsorships from other apparel companies.

Except that they may soon cease to exist by name on the surface if they end up deciding QX will become Alaska Express.

It probably didn't hurt that Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is a minority owner either.

Adidas has their North America headquarters in Portland, but my guess is that they felt they already get enough exposure without adding another logo to the front of the shirt. Other than them, the company many fans seemed to be hoping for was Widmer Brewing.

I wonder if these deals really do much to create loyalty toward an airline from fans. Anyone have an informed marketing perspective on this?

Not quite. On the jerseys and most on field equipment, yes, but the players can have individual contracts for their shoes and in the case of goalies, for their gloves.

I hope AS will come up with something more original in terms of logojet design than US did for e.g. the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers. But known AS, I don't think we'll be disappointed.

Well AS is also the official airline for the Mariners, so if we haven't seen a Mariner's logo jet by now, I don't know if having the name on a Timbers jersey is enough to get their own plane either.

I think it was probably a smart move. The Alaska name will get a lot of exposure across the country when the Timbers visit away teams and especially when they're on TV. Can't hurt to have one of their games on ESPN and every time there's a close up of a player you see Alaska Airlines in big letters across your screen. Considering most of the MLS teams are in cities where AS flies, it's a good thing.

I'm sorry but this is a total RED CARD! If Alaska paints a Timburrs plane, it will mean total United travel for me. They could have sponsored the Dynamutts or the Scarlet Cows, but not Porkscum. Oh yeah, and they are the official airline, yet they don't fly to most destinations in the MLS from Portland. hehe, Timburrs will have to connect in Seattle. Sounders 'til I die!

I applaud your loyalty but honestly if an airplane paint job that sports a livery that isn't your particular favorite teams colors is the what drives you to another airline, I think there are bigger issues that need to be resolved.

I know many will disagree but this thread makes me proud to be on airliners.net. I have yearned to see support for soccer for many years and since my biggest loves in life are soccer and airplanes, how could you blame for absolutely loving this thread (and explaining why I am single).

Anyway, this is important to aviation because I am not sure Alaska gets that much publicity throughout the nation. This is a big step for them in my opinion and even though I am 100% a Sounders fan, seeing AS get involved is a great thing for the sport and aviation. Yes the logo planes for US are cheap and non-inspiring, but in America we love our sports and if AS can help bring even more attention to the growing sport of soccer, then good for them. This alone will not make me fly them (both cause of my love for Sounders and WN), but it actually does improve my reputation of them though I admit it will not have any impact on 97.2% of Americans.

Welcome to MLS Portland and my hats off to Alaska for their involvement.

Why would it matter where a company is based in order to determine sponsorship?

Take these for example:

Official Airlines
New York Yankees - Delta - Headquarters: Atlanta, GA
Oakland Raiders - Hawaiian - Headquarters: in Honolulu, HI
New England Patriots - American - Headquarters: Dallas, TX

Stadium Names
Baltimore Ravens - M&T Field - M&T headquarters: Buffalo, NY
San Fransisco Giants - At&T Park - At&T headquarters: Dallas, TX

Strategic marketing.
It's 737s, 747s and 380s. Not 737's, 747's and 380's. Learn to use the apostrophe for crying out loud.

I see where you are coming from and I do agree with you. Just understand that for some people who work for AS or live in Seattle, they know AS is the hometown airline. The main thing to remember is that unlike the other examples you gave, Alaska's name and/or logo will be sprawled across the front of the jersey. You do not see "Ravens" or "Giants" or in this case "Portland Timbers" on the front of the jersey but rather "Alaska" for a team in Portland. So yes, you are right that it does not matter BUT at first glance you do tilt your head slightly and go "huh?" and THEN you remember it is all about marketing and the dollar.

Normally, it wouldn't. In this case/context, you have to understand the rivalry that exists between the cities of PDX and SEA. More specifically to the topic, the rivalry that exists between the Sounders and Timbers.

In none of those examples is the company name on the uniform, and in none of those examples is the biggest rival of the team from the same city as the headquarters of the sponsor. It's like having a New York Life logo on the Boston Red Sox uniform.

So far, there has been no indicator that the QX name will be done away with, nor its logo. That was pure A.net rumor and speculation.

Agreed, and it is a very sensitive topic in the PNW....leaves a few folks scratching their heads on this one.

I was half expecting Resers Foods or some tech company from Hillsboro to sponsor the team. It's good that AS is sponsoring the club. Even though QX is the major force at PDX, I can see a Timbers logojet flying across the nation. Especially into SEA!

This brings up another interesting question: What is the status of sponsorship for PGE Park? Will it revert to it's old name of Civic Stadium or do they have a sponsor yet? Perhaps Horizon Stadium for QX? Beyond that, what about Key Bank sponsoring the Rose Garden since the Sonics were moved from Seattle and nothing is going on at Key Arena?

AFAIK they are still working on the stadium sponsorship deal.

Someone posted these Getafe shirts with Burger King sponsor on the Timbers Army boards, and suggested that perhaps the Timbers could do the same. "Alaska Airlines" on the outside. Chester on the inside.
