Ncaa Football Week 1 Thread

Sun Sep 05, 2010 2:42 am

How did your team do?

What are your thoughts on this weekend's activity?

As far as Texas, they beat Rice 34-17, which, while perfectly sound, was a bit underwhelming. We ran the ball normally than I expect we will this season, trying to establish some consistency. They were effective, averaging 4.6 ypc, but not flashy. Gilbert has a good football mind, and has a hell of an arm, and generally played well. Some poor decisions, but nothing too bad. He finished 14-23 for 170ish yards. No TDs, but no picks, either. The defense played well after making adjustments on their first drive. We dropped two EASY pick-6s, but aside from a fluke tipped pass TD (that was well short, but somehow upheld on review), and a garbage time TD after a special teams miscue, they looked very solid.

The officials were horrible today, blowing 3 reviews, which is just inexcusable. They didn't affect the outcome of the game, but had the game been called better, there wouldn't be jibber jabber about Texas looking bad today. We did just fine for a brand new offensive system. Still some kinks to work out, but it is to be expected.

As far as other observations: there are only two good teams this season-Alabama and Ohio State. Florida looked AWFUL today, their offense didn't do JACK! Oklahoma almost got beat by Utah State at home. Their vaunted defense gave up 425 yards! Their secondary looked D-III ish, and Landry Jones just isn't that good. Florida State must be licking their chops for a shot at that defense next week in Norman. Can't say I hope OU wins.

Generally, teams did what they were supposed to do this weekend, with the exception of Ole Miss, losing at home in double overtime to FCS Jacksonville State! SEC SEC SEC SEC!!!!!    And Kansas losing 6-3 to North Dakota State at home (!!!!).

The TCU-OSU game has been a pleasure to watch, a very close game, and pretty well played. TCU is not the 6th best team in the country. As soon as I type that, OSU throws the game away on a bad snap. Damn!

Looking forward to Boise State-Va Tech. Go Hokies!

My feelings today can be summed up in three simple words: FIRE MIKE LOCKSLEY!!!

I'd prefer it be out of a cannon, but I'll settle for a pink slip. F'ing shameful performance

That was a good game. I disagree with you about TCU though. I thought they were clearly a better team than Oregon State on both sides of the ball. Just a couple of boneheaded throws by Dalton from coasting to the win.

The Cincy vs. Fresno State game has been good. Bearcats dominated the first quarter, but the Bulldogs have awakened now and it is tied at the half.

UNC should have had another play, but the referees botched the call.

Some commentators seem to erroneously think that there is something Boise State can do this season to be taken seriously. But, unless they can join the SEC or something in the next week, they will be what they have been. Time to add a playoff in the NCAA.

Ohio State beat Marshal 45-7. Obviously good news but it's Week 1 and you're supposed to win your cream-puff games in Week 1 (well, unless you're the University of Michigan playing Appalachian State    )

As a Boise State student and through-and-through Bronco fan, I'm tremendously excited to see where this season takes us.

That being said, I think we've been way over-hyped, to the point where I'm almost starting to believe it's intentional. I've never been more nervous for a game than I am for the Virginia Tech game on Monday, not because we have so much to win, but because we seem to have so much to lose. I feel like it's gonna be far easier to disappoint than it will be to impress, which I find disappointing.

But we'll see. Till then, I have no fingernails.

Cheers!

Are you in D.C. with what seems to be half the population of Idaho? Everywhere I go there's an orange and blue shirt or cap with the bronco logo on it.

I was impressed with Georgia's new defense. I know it was only UL Lafayette, but it took them until almost the 4th quarter to even get a first down, and their 7 points were on a busted coverage. It was my first game as a member of the Redcoat Band. It was a ton of fun. If anyone here sees the Redcoats, please say hi. You can't miss me. I'm the clarinet player who's 6'3" among a bunch of 5-foot-somethings.

I'm sure the score will be the same next Friday when I go down to Huntington for our game against them.

We (WVU) won against Coastal Carolina 31-0. The defense was showing quite a capability yesterday with CCU barely entering the red zone. Offense was looking ok, but its the first game and improvement will be coming I'm sure.

All in all, We Won, PITT Lost, good weekend for anyone.

While not much of a football fan, it has been interesting listening to the radio of late. OU started out ranked down in the 20's somewhere and by Friday afternoon the hype had grown to the point that all that was lacking was sending the BCS trophy for autographs. I suspect there will be some tough times on the practice field this week and humble pie for lunch.
The other OSU, Oklahoma State University, looked pretty good with a 65-17 win against WSU.

Oh god the fighting Ackbars are in complete meltdown mode over losing to Jax State. MSU meanwhile flattened Memphis 49-7 and if any Texas or Ohio State fans are having delusions that they can beat Alabama this year...good lord Alabama's probably going to be even better offensively this year than they were last year.

While I completely agree that Alabama is the best team, far and away, saying their offense is going to be EVEN better this year isn't saying much. Alabama won last year in spite of their offense, not because of it. Their defense carried them last year, and will do the same this year. McElroy is not a great QB. He is serviceable, and with a Heisman winner who's not even the best RB in that backfield, that's all he needs to be.

I'll wait to be proved wrong.

K-State beat UCLA 31-22, in a sellout crowd here in Manhattan, over 51,000 people showed up. Great game, one of the most dramatic games I've been to as a student for football.

I feel bad for KU, who lost to North Dakota State yesterday. Not a good start to the Turner Gill era over there...

How did your team do?

It is a 50-50 thing for Washington fans. A lot of folks are frustrated and disappointed going into the game vs BYU. But UW lost 17-23, a 6 point loss. It is worth noting that this is not the 2008 type of loss. The kids did make a lot of mistakes (especially on Special Teams....that department needs LOTS of work!) and Jake Locker did not perform after all the Heisman hype that was going on at the beginning of the season. I did not watch the game on TV live but I was able to come home after work (knowing the score already) and get a small glimpse of what to expect this season. The UW guys were not too shabby at all, but again as I had said earlier: These guys need a lot of work! How can you hit a punter knowing that was an illegal hit? How can you oversnap the ball on a punt attempt that turned into a safety? Frustrating, I tell you. But these problems can be fixed which is true for any NCAA team out there. I did not see how Sarkisian and Holt were at any time firing up his players. I think that is one of the problems. The play calling was not where it should have been.

Going into this game, Sarkisian knew that BYU was going to come out and play some real tough football with motivation and passion......

.....And they did!

Getting Jake Locker out of the pocket was a very hard thing to do. Note that I was only able to watch up to halftime of the game and not the rest of the game itself. The first half told me that this is not the kind of Huskies I want to see and I darn well hope that some improvements are made THIS week. I do not want to see another 2008 failure.

The overall grade I give the Huskies performance against BYU: C-.

Up next for Washington: Syracuse - Sept 11th in Seattle.

Quoting KPDX (Reply 6):
72-0 Oregon.

That was expected when it comes to playing a very, very, very easy football team...... Nothing to cheer about. Almost every team in the major conferences was supposed to get win # 1 on the first week. Losing the first game is not a good thing. And winning the first game is nothing to cheer about, except for going 1-0.

Purdue lost 23 to 12 against Notre Dame. I just loved how nothing bad could be said about the ND team. Granted, Purdue didn't play that great (but better than in the past), ND made some mistakes and the commentators didn't say anything bad about them.

It was a shocking game. Not because Oregon blew out New Mexico, but because of the way it happened. The spread was 35. Oregon was up 59 at halftime. They were expected to win easily, but New Mexico was at least supposed to put up a fight. New Mexico rolled over and died as soon as the snap went awry on their first punt.

If I were an Oregon fan I'd be cheering a backup RB having a monster day, including five touchdowns in the first half. I'd be cheering an offense that put up 720 yards. I'd be cheering a defense that pitched a shutout and not even letting the Lobos get the ball inside the Oregon 35.

This game should NOT be 17-0 right now. I hate the ACC, but damn it, I'm so tired of hearing about Boise. They may be good for one win a year, but they absolutely would not survive in a place like the SEC.

I was very impressed with the Ducks... Who cares if it was New Mexico? Pitching a shutout against any divison 1 team is impressive. Let's not forget this is the same New Mexico who beat Arizona (at UA's HOME), another PAC-10 team..as you know, in 2008. Don't forget two punt return for touchdowns...in a row by Cliff Harris. And 5 TD's by Kenjon Barner... in the first HALF. I was impressed.

Us Oregon fans will get a real feel about this team, this saturday against the Volunteers.

If Ohio State or Alabama lose a single game this year, we are now pretty much guaranteed a Boise State appearance in the BCS title game, as crazy as that sounds. It's so funny to think that their TOUGHEST remaining game for the entire year is against Oregon State, ranked a lofty #24. Maybe Hawaii has a trick up their sleeve? Nobody else will, that's for sure.

Anyway, although I'm interested to see what will happen with the Broncos, I was sad to see VT lose as it was a blow to the ACC. "My" team is the Hurricanes, and we had a first game as easy as expected, completely blowing Florida A&M out of the game with a very efficient offense. Jacory Harris has such a nice touch with the ball and I think he's going to have a fantastic season. Everything really comes down to next week at Ohio State. Not only is it a massive game in terms of this season, it's huge because of what happened the last time we played Ohio State in the 2003 championship game. A couple of my friends are going to the game and I couldn't be more jealous, I'll be wearing my Kenny Dorsey jersey and going nuts. Can't wait...

Don't overlook Fresno State. After a slow first quarter against Cincinnati, they absolutely dominated the Bearcats. They could certainly give a challenge to Boise State.

They start WAC play next week on the road against Utah State. The next week they are in Oxford to play the fighting Ackbars (I love that name MD-90). If they impress in those they could get some attention in the polls. Then the schedule is favorable for them as the play weak conference schools on the road while Nevada and Hawaii have to visit Fresno. Looking at the schedule I think they've got a decent chance of being 9-0 when they make the trip to Boise.
