Anyone Running Internet Explorer 9 Beta Yet?

Wed Sep 15, 2010 11:16 pm

I was wondering, is anyone here running Internet Explorer 9 Beta yet? It was released today.

I am running it, and I am very impressed! The beta is surprisingly stable on my computer, if not more stable than IE8. I have a feeling that IE9 will go Gold ahead of schedule.

Is anyone else here running it?

No, and I have no intentions of it. IE8 is horrible enough - I have to use it at college and it's so slow it's pathetic.

I'd rather use Opera or Netscape, thanks.

Who still uses Netscape? Do you mean Firefox? Firefox is okay, but I still prefer IE.

I'm using it right now and I am honestly shocked. It seems as long as Microsoft has competition to light a fire under their ass they can really deliver. After all the good stuff they've pulled out recently (Windows 7, Zune HD, Windows Phone 7) IE was the last sour note I had with them and they actually managed to bring it back from being a complete laughing stock. I don't know if I'll switch permanently at this point, but I'll give it awhile to put it through its paces and see what happens. It'll be especially nice when I get my new machine in a couple weeks and I can use the new GPU acceleration (which is also on it's way to FF and Chrome). It's gonna be flying.

These kinds of claims crack me up. (I don't use IE)

You don't know what all is going on on your college computers and network, nor have you really done a side-by-side on the same network with the same computer. However, testers who have say that there is really no perceptible difference in any of the browser speeds. You can't tell when one opens a page .01 second faster, but if it is said so by the cool kids, it must be so.

Speed aside (coming from someone who has actually done speed comparison tests between all the major browsers) I'm still sticking to FF, for now, mostly because of the myriad of extensions and what not. But yes all browsers I've tested seem to be equally fast.

However, I'll wait to try the new IE once it moves out of beta, I get the feeling I may be pleasantly surprised.

6 is still the standard buidl on our work desktops, although I've sneakily updated to 7.

Needless to say, I'm typing this in FF....

In my case the browser itself is slow - its slow starting up, the functions lag and its not as user friendly as Firefox, which I am using right now. There is a reason why Firefox is becoming the primary browser for many schools and libraries, which have been slow in the browser switch!

It runs faster here than Firefox does. Notably Firefox seems to do its many updates each time. The very thing that makes it so popular (the addons) are also the thing that makes it slow to get going sometimes. That said, I'll still keep using Firefox since I can browse the web in relative peace, free from advertising banners.

Urgh! Wash your mouth out. I can honestly say I'm not sad about seeing the end of that browser.

Somehow, I can't bring myself to try IE9 Beta. I'll wait and see.

I have begun playing around with it on my laptop. Unfortunately, because of its (maybe I'm just blind) lack of an available adblock addon, no spell checker and no cloud favorites storage, I'm inclined to stick with Chrome. Chrome also seems somewhat faster still, but I'm hopeful that's just an issue with it being a beta.

Have you tried Pale Moon? Its basically a Firefox version with much of the crap that no one used and did much to slow it down removed. Apparently in bench tests it has been up to 25% faster than FF, I have measured consistently around 30% faster start-up and 20% faster browsing than FF with the same combination of about 15 security and functionality addons. Still a tad slower than Chrome for me (without addons i couldn't tell the difference), but much more capable as an all rounder IMO.

Actually, It's so slow it's unusable to the point of it's detrimental to my learning (all my course material is online now) - the fact it's a POS anyway does not improve my opinion of it

It's better than IE, that's for sure. IE is too bloated. OK, I use firefox but I have hardly any addons (a hotmail checker, a twitter feed and adblock) and it's far better than IE, and firefox is "supposed" to be slower than IE to some people.

Too bad they royally f**ked Microsoft in the process. Oh boo-hoo MS has an advantage because they ship the OS with a browser built in.

Quoting ajd1992 (Reply 12):

No offence, but its people like you that slow down the evolution of the web. Every time you visit a site using Netscape, its recorded in the site logs and the big wigs around the conference table look at the logs and see they still have people using old browsers, and then tell the site developers to cripple the site to cater to you, or add so much extra crap to the site to make it play well with your browser.

Please, don't take offence. I just hope you realize that the above is true. The same is true with corporations who use IE 6 still, as well.

I bet if MS was able to somehow publish IE 9 without the bad reputation they have when it comes to IE, the browser would do fairly well. Unfortunately, public perception is a huge role, as we saw with Vista and the related Project Mohave (or whatever it was called) experiment, as well as speculation on Vista and actual user reaction.

I already gave IE 9 a shot and quite like it, but I've been Googlized and use Chrome bookmark and extension sync on all of my computers, so Chrome it is for me. Plus, having native support for userscripts.org is a huge bonus
The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.

I use Firefox. After the dismal experience that was IE8, I take a very cautios approach to IE9. No doubt I'll give it a try though eventually...

I don't understand all the hate for IE. I have been using it for years and IE8 has worked flawlessly for me. I have had FF for years as well, but never been able to get hooked enough to make it my default browser. Everyone raves of FF being faster, but I don't agree. I have ever liked how it handles the loading of pages. It seems to load in partial increments while IE generally brings the whole page up at once.

You can go into the about:config list to customise just about everything about the way the browser operates (but follow a guide online or you'll mess it up), including how it loads pages to suit faster connections like yours must be by loading everything simultaneously etc.

It's good, but basically a complete ripoff of Chrome. Even down to the tab position and the suggestions when you open a new tab!

It's pretty stable and quick enough for me, and looks a lot better than IE8 visually. Still prefer Chrome but I am a Google freak

It's the same as the hate for hospital food; people don't like it because complaining about it is the "in" thing to do!

With IE9, Microsoft finally caught up to Google Chrome, although it seems they copied it. I couldn hardly believe how similar the two browsers are.

If you really look at all the things Google has it's fingers in regarding your personal information, they are far more evil than Microsoft ever was or will be.

Well this thread got me curious to download the IE9 Beta and already I'm running into issue on one of my favorite sites, Flickr. It doesn't seem to work with the new Flickr features...

Not for me, I dowloaded IE8 as soon as it came out. But it crashed so many times I got really annoyed with it, so I downloaded FF and Chrome. The difference between IE8 and FF was just too big to ignore. Noticeably faster and more stable. I also still prefer FF over Chrome.

I don't think I have EVER experienced IE8 crash. Perhaps it was a computer issue?

You'll be surprised by the difference between 8 and 9.
