Is There An A.net Equivalent For Trains?

Fri Sep 17, 2010 8:56 pm

Hi there,

as the topic says, instead of googling around and overlooking the best hits, I'd like to ask the collective wisdom if there is something like an airliners.net of rail traffic. As in, an international user community, a Tech/Ops equivalent and some decent pictures.

Not that I don't like this site! Just want to broaden my horizon

off the top of my head:

http://www.railpictures.net/ lots of pictures, most of them from the US and a small forum
http://www.drehscheibe-online.de/ large German forum
http://www.hochgeschwindigkeitszuege.com/ lots of technical and background info on HSTs, German
http://www.bahnbilder.de/ photo database, German
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

...there is also http://tubesnaps.fotopic.net/ , which has pretty nice pictures from my favourite underground railway system, The Tube.

As others said before, www.drehscheibe-online.de is a huge forum for german trains. Discussions are sometimes a bit unfriendly, there are quite a lot of idiots and narrow-minded people around, but far from all.

The forum "Historische Bahn" on that site features the best pictures of the 1950s to 1980s you can find anywhere on german trains. The "Fotoforum" has real good pictures.

News and Allgemeines Forum are fine, as well. Just be careful if youre supporting Stuttgart 21

In the good 'ol USA, this is the most popular site. When there is a rail incident, the news media often sources info from this site. When we had that big Metrolink - UP head on crash, this is where the media found that the engineer was texting.
