Moscow Mayor Luzhkov Fired

Tue Sep 28, 2010 7:27 am

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-0...-citing-a-loss-of-confidence-.html

Some of my thoughts:

The dismissal was done by the President in the most harsh wordings possible for a president, loss of confidence, it has happened only once before in Russia thus far.

Most likely the Luzhkov supporters in the city apparatus will resist in the forthcoming period as Luzhkov had an enormous power basis. He'll be charged with criminal charges.

This is a clear sign of the President that he isn't the puppet of Putin as many thought. Luzhkov is a very high ranked United Russia person so my guess is that there is a power struggle in the Kremlin going on. This event will make the President more popular.

I liked this morning the radio reporter of Echo of Moscow "Everything these days is made in China, even the dismissal of the Moscow Mayor" (as President Medvedev is on a state visit in China)

Your thoughts?

Possibly an presumptive move by Medvedev to restrict the power of Putin - since there will be a national election in Russia in the next few years - perhaps Medvedev isn't the lapdog that Putin thought he was, and Putin will have to fight hard to gain back the Presidency of Russia? This will be interesting to watch....

The president of Russia can fire any mayor or governor as he pleases ? Is it really a good idea for a head of state to have that kind of power ?

Putin changed the law regarding direct elections during his term as President of Russia, I seem to remember...

If Putin has an opposition of any kind, it's better than nothing. But I agree that this kind of power is not a good thing.

Correct, the President of Russia is entitled to appoint & fire regional governors. Moscow and St Petersburg are Russia's 2 federal cities (not belonging to their respective states aka oblasts) where the mayor is actually the governor.
