Hm. By the sound of your post, it could be anything from a general warning (like the one I read for each and every country on the websites of the German Foreign Office) to a panicky stay-safe-at-home overreaction. Should be interesting!

There are reports the US government may issue a warning to its citizens to avoid crowded places in Europe due to new threats from al Qaeda.

It is understood the State Department may issue a travel warning as early as Sunday.
They will advise Americans to stay away from European tourist sites, transportation hubs and other facilities.

Affective from, probably, sunday (tomorrow)...

There are plans for commando style attacks in England, Germany and France, just like we saw in Mumbai. According to the intelligence the agency's got, it are mainly Pakistani's living in England, and Afghan people from Germany.

Well, we're certainly saving AQ a lot of money and effort. No longer do they need to go the trouble and expense of actually executing an attack. They just have to discuss one and we all go nuts!

Those terror warnings have become as effective as the kid who always cries that the wolf is coming when it isn't. Instead of crawling to a corner in fear, we need to show them that we're not afraid and that we'll go about our business as usual, in defiance to their campaign of terror. We in Germany have better things to do, for example it's our national holiday and we're celebrating 20 years of unification between the Federal Republic and the DDR into a sole, free and democratic Germany.

If anything, the State Department should tell people to avoid crowds near a certain German railway station.

If the government really wants us to avoid travel to Europe, all we need to do is to continue printing money like there is no tomorrow. Sooner or later, we will see serious inflation. Consequently, the value of the dollar will really go down against other currencies which will leave few Americans who will be able to afford to see a foreign land.

Seriously, I would have to think that the main tourist attractions and transportation centers would be a high priority for local and national crime prevention, thus making it that much harder to an attack to occur.

This will not prevent my wife and I from celebrating our 11th anniversary in France next spring.

All silliness aside, complacency kills. When ever we get hit by rockets over here in Iraq, yes it is a pain in the ass to go to the bunker, and no I don't go unless they start hitting close to me, that is when I take cover. Do I accept that my stupidity may one day get me killed or maimed, yes! Am I smart for this? probably not. But I also have great SA(Situational Awareness)
You can get killed, mowing your lawn or walking to the store, and I accept that, but there are those that are more cautious. If you ask yourself, "why does the government keep putting out these warnings"? Accept that there are people that care more about their safety, and the safety of their loved ones, than you may? Wandering aimlessly is no way to be, and there are many that have been killed or injured, that had the attitude,"it will never happen to me"!

Personally, it does not bother me when they put out these warnings, because they just remind me of the possible danger, which heightens my awareness, do they keep me from traveling? No!

Have you ever thought that there could be non-specific intel that there was an impending attack, and by making this public, the terrorists had to change their plans now that it was public? The problem with Anti-terrorism is the safer they keep us, the less attention they get, we mostly hear about their failures when an attack happens and lives were lost.
Would you rather have these warnings and nothing happpen, or only hear about them after hundreds of lives are lost?
Stay Safe Everyone!

I am taking this as more fear mongering from the U.S. State Department to the masses who will believe them.
This new warning is issued because of a supposed 'Osama bin Laden' tape. It seems pretty clear from the Frost interview with Benazir Bhutto that he is dead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnychOXj9Tg

These warnings will certainly not change my way of living.
I will go through train stations, airports and public places as usual and as I need to.

The more people abide to these warnings by getting scared and believe them, the more power they give to these terror groups.

I've just tried to find something on this alert at http://travel.state.gov/ but apparently, there's nothing out yet.

It's certainly interesting to see how they get some of their facts wrong:

Quote:
In order to stage a demonstration [in Germany], groups must obtain prior police approval

One look at our constitution and lawbooks would reveal that only planned demonstrations need to be registered (not "approved") 48 hours in advance. Spontaneous demonstrations that can de facto not be registered are very much legal as well.

sorry for this slight off-topic excursion, but I felt the point was valid

Note that this announcement was made about a month before our major elections here, with all Congressional seats and about 1/3 rd of our Senate's up to a vote. Coincidence, even if the Democrats are in control (for now)

Once again we see the allegatgions of 'increased chatter' on the internet from certain areas of the world and Europe. There has not been a major attack in Europe in several years so there is a fear of complacency. We have tightened access to the USA, makeing it more difficult to get outsiders into the USA to attack us within (like in 1993 at the WTC and 9/11/01). Europe has a significant base of European citizens or with easy access to Europe of those who are radicalized believers in Islam or due to their personal failures, are suceptable to al-Queda and other radical groups. Europe provides a target rich enviroment, with many places that Americans can be at as well as well known landmarks that if damaged or destoyed, would bring a lot of attention. Part alleged in potential attacks would be 'soft' targets like shopping areas and hotels, as occured in Mumbai, India last year. al-Queda and related groups have been looking quite weak in recent years and may want to show they are still around. You also have the involvement of European countries in Iraq and Afganistan with military and economic involvement, so making them targets.

I hope nothing happens, that any potential terror attacks are tharwted, or has happened sometimes in the past, they fail before they are carried out. Meanwhile, this may hurt tourist businesses, airlines, business plans in Europe at a time of considerable economic difficulty. Perhaps that is part of the alleged terror plans - not so much to kill people, but to scare them and in turn hurt the economies of Europe and the USA.

The UK has now issued a terror alert for British Citizens travelling to France and Germany! There must be some more to this than just caution , I cant remember ever seeing the UK put out such an alert for Western Europe other than maybe Spain when ETA was in full swing.

Gee.... I seem to remember GW Bush raising the spectre of terrorism every time he needed to deflect attention away from US domestic issues. There are US mid-term elections coming up. Could Obama be using the same playbook?

That wouldn't explain why at the same time, the UK made a terror alert for people travelling to France and Germany.

Anyone ever think that there really is a threat and it's not just some political move? Fear mongering? I mean I guess it could be but some of you guys are sounding like hard core conspiracy theorists. Or is it just me?

Very true , if they dont warn and suddenly a blast goes off and kills a few hundred then there would be outrage! Id rather have the warning and then make my own informed decision to be honest.

That all depends......

If their information or "intelligence" (sic) was provided from US sources, like the lies Colin Powel told Blair the last time the Yanks wanted UK cooperation.

More irrelevant propaganda from an irrelevant government agency.

99.999% of Americans will ignore it and travel wherever in Europe they darn well please anyway.

I doubt it because Obama has not really played the terror card that much. And also, the general public perception is that liberals are soft on terror, so playing the terror card now would probably hurt him, not help him.

I'd guess this is more like seismologists and volcanologists warn that a volcano may erupt or there's a hurricane warning from the national hurricane center. They probably have some data that makes them think the risk is higher than "normal." That said, they put out the information. If nothing comes to pass, a lot of people say "see, I told you..."

Most Americans don't care in my opinion. That is, most Americans who would vacation in Europe. I strongly suspect that the people more likely to be fired up about this don't travel in other countries often anyway.

I wouldn't go beating up the US State Department, they're probably just doing the best they can to let people make up their own minds.

Wow, the frenzy that is beginning here. No Govt said anything about stopping travel to Europe, all they implied was to be aware of your surroundings, your dealings. Just be that much more cautious.. I dont see anything wrong in that. No need to change your plans, and they aren't asking you to.

Slippery slope: Announce being aware due to chatter that may have been heard, or don't.

Not having to do with terrorism. I remember here in Honolulu a few months back when there was an earthquake in South America. may have been the Chile one,, can't remember. But I live near the water close to downtown and at 11:00 am, there were Tsunami warnings going off for a "possible" chance of higher waves that could come inland. I literally remember all the merchants where I live shutting everything down. Now I thought, "you know, this realy is an overreaction. The chances are slim to none that waves are going to come crashing and over taking the streets". But sure enough, all the shops, open markets etc. were shutting down at 11:00 am. I had nothing to eat in my apt. lol so I was pissed. This was a Saturday as well and my day off and a lot of town was shut down. Nothing ever happened (and nothing where I lived eventually opened up for the remainder of the day).

I guess the point is that govt has to serve all parties the best they can. It may not be what you or I feel is correct, but guaranteed someone out there 'is' thankful for said warnings.. Make up your own minds.

Another thing... Why is the US State Dept to issue Europe-wide terror alert?

Is it that they already know something is going to happen - the place and time and all only they won't tell more?
They will just keep it "evasive"?

hmmmm.... weird...
whatever it is... I am not buying into it.
