At The Movies: Great Newspaper Capers

Sun Oct 10, 2010 8:27 pm

One of my favorite things is old time (note to European readers, in the U.S. "old time" means pre-1950) newspaper lore. I love newspapers; I love the role they've played as reflections of the cities they serve, and of course I lament their decline in the Internet age.

When I was 18 years old I got to see the movie His Girl Friday and I was in heaven. I wanted to see more of these 30's and 40's style, fast-talking, bustling urban newspaper capers, but have had strangely little luck finding films that fit that genre (though I know likely none of them will hold a candle to His Girl Friday). The closest I've come is Call Northside 777.

Do you know of any other charming newspaper-focused movies from Hollywood's golden age?
