Self Gloss: Meet Lusi!

Tue Nov 02, 2010 1:21 am

http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/9500/lusi.jpg

Lusi is our new "daughter." She's a 17-week-old Labradoodle who we got from a rescue group. And she's lovely!

They say she's gonna be 50-70 lbs (23-30 kg).

My family has a seven year old Golden doodle-they're great dogs (although the poodle intellect can make your life difficult).

These are unusual dogs to find in a rescue group...what's her story?

Because I'm bilingual, it's important that the name be pronounced the same in English and Spanish. Because I speak Iberian Spanish, "Lucy" would be pronounced "Luthie."

Story is she was bred by an amateur and given as a gift to his first owner, a military wife who had a baby with a surprise major heart defect in need of multiple operations. It was too much to have a puppy at home and she was locked out back all the time. So she surrendered her to a rescue group. Her loss... our gain!

Here's the shocking bit: She's CALM. She's well-mannered. She's gentle. She's housebroken and crate-trained. I expected a 17week labradoodle puppy to have sixteen paws all moving in different directions at all waking moments. She's totally not like that. She needs to be taught some basic manners but overall she's absolutely lovely!

We already have a Poodle/Shiba-Inu mix named Paco, but we should have named him Paco. ZOMG is he a smart dog. And, as I explain to my friends, I'm not proud of the fact that he's smart. He's annoying as hell. If there's a way out of a confinement, he'll find it. Even knows deceit. A few weeks ago, I heard him sneaking out of our bedroom to go downstairs and root around for a snack. I sat bolt upright in bed: "Paco!" He immediately went into a stretch and an itch as if to say, "What, Daddy? I just wandered over to the door for a stretch and a scratch..."

This is Paco.

Although I grew up having dogs , this and the hair are the reasons why I simply cannot have dogs inside the house. Having a big garden for them helped. Two months away from home and already miss my dog.

Congrats on the new pup. Our neighbors have a Labradoodle that could be Lusi's twin and your description of the sixteen pawed pup is accurate for this particular dog. What a handful she is! Watching her romp around the yard reminds me of the Boxers my grandparents always had.

After we got Paco from a rescue group, we were convinced: no breeders. There are enough dogs in the world. Every dog that gets adopted from rescue groups is another dog that didn't get put down in a shelter.

So please, no breeders. Even that sought-after designer dog you want is out there if you're patient.

Indeed they don't. They don't go around humping every cushion or leg they see.

Cats are affectionate ... when it suits them or when it is to their advantage.

No breeders here either. Our moggies are well taken care of in that department. It wouldn't be fair on a dog if we were to get one now because we both work fulltime. Should we decide to get a dog - if and when I retire - then it'll be one of those cute mutts from the rescue with those big brown eyes and devoid of balls or plumbing.

BTW, Lusi is gorgeous.

I am not talking about poodles. I had pointers and we now have a Russian Shepperd. Not exactly the breeds of dogs that would fit in a house. And cruel? You're overreacting, it is more cruel for me to have a dog confined in a closed space than having him/her enjoy a big outdoors garden.

Don't get a dog that won't fit in your house. Seems like common sense to me. I have an 86 lb. Samoyed I have a house that fits him so he can be around his family.

Talk to any animal behaviourist. Dogs are pack animals and need to be around companions. They will tell you it is cruel to leave a dog outside alone all the time.

I am glad that you are so comfortable "assuming things" while you are sitting exactly on the other side of the world from it all. I already feel comfortable to ask, is there someone always in the house for your dog that doesn't work to keep it company or do you hire a sitter?

But just to clear a few things up:
1. My parents spend most of their time in the garden or their yard (it is Greece after all, not Alaska) sitting around or taking care of their plants, the dog spends time with them most of the day.

2. The only time the dog has ever wanted to get in the house was either when it is too hot outside or when kids throw firecrackers around the neighbourhood during Easter. She prefers to stay out and play in the garden and definitely prefers to sleep out at night. Not all dogs like to sit on a couch or sleep on the bed.

Quoting iairallie (Reply 25):
Talk to any animal behaviourist.

Don't need to, my dogs never had any behavioural issues, but even then, I wouldn't go that far. As much as I love dogs I am sorry but I never treat them like I would treat my own kids. They are good companions but they never stop being dogs (=animals), maybe it is a cultural thing so don't take it the wrong way.

Quoting iairallie (Reply 25):

Who said that my house is not big enough? There you go assuming again! Why is it that some people find it hard to believe that some dogs live outside a house?

Quoting iairallie (Reply 25):

Good for you! What does this have to do with me being "cruel" to my dogs for not letting them live in my house and sleep on my bed?

You laugh, but I'm serious! Paco has mounted several female dogs in my presence, including one who was in heat. He has never mounted a male dog nor will he permit himself to be mounted.

The funniest one was our former roommate's dog, Kaya. Kaya is a cattle-dog mix, an alpha bitch* of the highest level. When Paco first met her, he tried to mount her and got schooled. A few months later, I was playing with Kaya by putting a blanket over her and wrapping her up in it. No sooner did I have her completely under the blanket than Paco ran over and mounted the Kaya-shaped lump in the blanket. I stopped him.

Congratulations on your addition. Clearly the previous owners had invested the money/time/effort to properly train the dog. This is good because IMO there is absolutely nothing worse than an out of control dog. To that point, I can't watch the movie Marley and Me, as just seeing the trailers makes me angry.

All puppies are out-of-control at first. They need training, which takes time. People get frustrated at owners of dogs with challenging behavior issues, much like Paco's.

Paco is less than thrilled with his new sister. He mostly ignores her unless she encroaches on something he wants (for exmaple, if I invite him onto my lap and she tries to jump up, he growls at her... which gets him disinvited onto my lap).

But Paco has only ever been playful with one other dog, our former roommate's dog, Zoe. And he's most certainly not playful with Lusi. He'll either come around... or he won't. Either way, Lusi is here to stay.
