Is It Worth Upgrading From Xp To Win7?

Sun Nov 21, 2010 5:43 pm

I have an old Presario V2000. Upgrading will cost me around $220 (memory; system upgrade, etc).
Selling isn't an option. Won't get more than $150, if lucky.
Any suggestions?

Well, I don't think your PC would run Windows 7. If it did, it would be excruciatingly slow. You can download the Windows 7 compatibility tool from Microsoft and see.
I would upgrade it to maximum memory and go from there. That's it. That'lll give you some needed speed while you save for a new PC.

It'll still likely be really slow. I honestly suggest spending an extra 200-300 dollars and buying a new PC.

Else...stick with XP.

You'd probably struggle with Win7, it is faster on some machines but slower on older PCs.

Have you thought about running a Linux distro? You can get that looking really sweet at a fraction of the performance hit of Windows, and these days the PITA side of it (struggling for drivers, compiling programs etc), is all but gone. You can even run Windows programs on it with the help of a program called WINE.

I've been running OpenSUSE on my laptop for a couple of months now and no way would I go back to Windows. The performance and stability makes it a no brainer for me.

Unless you have a solid processor (dual core etc) I honestly wouldn't waste the cash. It'd be seriously slow. I have a 1.8GHz Dual Core processor, and if it wasn't for my 4gb of RAM, it'd be horribly slow.

I'd just get a whole new system. I realise that may not be possible, but it's an option for the future. As solid as XP is, eventually the support will stop for it (if it hasn't already, I'm not sure) and 7 is the way to go. It's a great OS, one of the better MS OSs.

And the specs are? ALWAYS post your pc's specs when asking for info.

I just recently used Ubuntu 10.10 x64 exclusively for a month and was not impressed at all. I mean, it's an ok OS, but it was extremely unstable for me, (yes yes, even with all the latest updates), and much slower than Win7.

But for an older computer or a netbook one of the more user-friendly Linux distros will probably be good enough. And heck, it's free.

I agree completely. I've been on it for almost a year and as I write, I'm spending over 2 days trying to get a mirror image of a partition. This after 3 effing days screwing with a dual boot thats supposedly so easy with Ubuntu. Meanwhile, Windows 7 has completely won us over. Life is so much simpler.

I also agree about posting your machine specs. We have run Win 7 on an 8(9?) year old T23 Thinkpad with only 256 ram.

I'm running Win 7 on a 6 year old VAIO notebook with a Pentium M processor and 1.5Gb or RAM. The computer was having several hardware and software issues that I couldn't quite solve even after multiple formats and re-installs of XP. Installed a copy of Win 7 from the Home user three pack, solved both the hardware (win 7 seems to handle the internal wireless network card better) and software issues and it now runs like a dream! Is significantly faster than the XP install as well. I don't use the graphics features like aero though so if you want those features from Win 7 I suggest a new machine.

Ditto, it seemed okay but in the end I just didn't like the look and feel.

for a new PC

Considering how cheap new PCs are in the US this might be an easier option instead of sinking money into an older machine, even if you are just upping the RAM and the OS.

I can agree that upgrading to Win7 from XP is a leap in useability, performance, and stability; however, you can only go so far back with the hardware. My desktop is 5 years old, and it maxxed out with that I can do with that particular hardware combo. While it runs fine, the older chips---and in my particular case with the BTX form factor---really limit the potential of the machine. Cannibalizing my current machine into a barebones ATX should do wonders, though.
