Worst Place You've Ever Been

Mon Dec 13, 2010 5:26 am

Since we have a thread about the best place you've ever been, I decided to create the opposite. It doesn't really have to be really bad, some place you expected to be soooo great but it's actually not that great as people said to be. I've gotta say mine has to be Hollywood, CA. I expected it to be glamorous but all I saw was hobos everywhere. Another one would be Los Angeles , oh the smog and pollution! Though I'm a fan of orange county and the outskirts of LA and of course, San Francisco. So I'm not hating on California!  in fact, it's the best state I've ever visited, but NY is better

1. West Virginia
2. The American South (including any part of Missouri that isn't St. Louis or Kansas City)
3. Rome (Southern Italy in general isn't too wonderful)
4. Terminal 2 at JFK.

Huntsville, AB. Horrible city. I haven't been there in years. Last time I went the taxi driver was a woman that weighed in excess of 300 lbs, was taking swigs from a bottle of Jack Daniels while telling us that the water beds at the local Ramada were something else.
The mall we went to near the airport was filthy dirty. I vowed never to return, and I haven't.

Despite the 300 ilbs part, she sounds like a pretty cool chick!
Any hotel with waterbeds is fantastic in my book.

Those weren't hobos, those were transvestites. Hollywood isn't what it used to be in the 1950s but the place still has a soul unlike the rest of southern California.

Tell us about your experience that made it so bad.

The worse places I've been would be parts of the south side of Chicago. East Saint Louis, Illinois, North Las Vegas, NV and Fresno, California.
Very rough environments with lots of crime, street thugs and people will be rude to you if you talk different.

Rio de Janeiro
Barranquilla, Colombia
Sugarland, Texas
Nuevo Laredo, Mexico

Santiago, Chile
Barajas, Spain
Eagle Pass, Texas
Friburg, Switzerland
Venice, Italy
Ventimiglia, Italy
Genova, Italy

Zurich, Switzerland

Berne, Switzerland

Why the grief about Switzerland? Essentially because it is boring. To the death. Yes, it´s pretty, picturesque, people are nice (Xenophobic) but nice. It´s just a boring place to be. You can easily Rosti, Raclette, or fondue yourself to death there. And boy, do Zurich people have an obsession with Lipton Lemon Iced Tea on Tetrabrick containers.

National Lampoons Vacation was no exaggeration when they got lost in Saint Louis. It was actually an accurate representation of East Saint Louis.
Richard Pryor (from Peoria) made jokes about getting lost in southern Illinois.
Rather than giving directions, they'll tell you a story and direct you to someone who 'might' have better directions.
That happened to us when we got lost in East Saint Louis in 1984 on our drive from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Various rural towns in China also fit the bill, despite many breathtaking (in the good way) experiences in that country.

This is a pretty good question. I love traveling and always enjoy and airport or train station even if its terrible.
Since its airliners worst airport: FCO

Worst Place: I can not really think of one place I hated but I guess Canberra Australia. Just a pretty boring place. I went there for a basketball tournament but the city was just small and well boring.

I've heard that there is a marked difference economically and otherwise between northern and southern Italy, with the north being more well off, similar to America.

But Rome and Naples are dirty and cramped. Pretty much everything seems poorly maintained and little care is put into the appearence of things. If you want to know how old something is, find the earliest date in the graffiti. Plus it has a pretty uncomfortable climate. It isn't all bad though, Sorrento and the Amalfi coast weren't bad and the clutter and chaos of Rome definitely does not extend to the Vatican.

In nearly forty years of travellng, I can truly list only four places I hated.

In no particular order:

Las Vegas
Singapore
Monte Carlo
Dubai

And I'm easily pleased . . .

Difficult to say the worst place, as I am generally in "holiday" mode and enjoying places I go to

London is definitely up there, it is one place that is just dire, dirty, noisy, smelly, rude people, just horrendous.

Paris is pretty similar, must be the "big city" syndrome (but then Singapore is a big city and was nice).

Brest, a town full of 50s and 60s concrete buildings, the surrounding area is pretty but the city is just a whole load of nothingness. Nicknamed "Slough-on-Sea".

Cologne, the city centre is pretty but walk 500 metres away and you are in some really dodgy areas. Not a nice place..

New York City - noisy, dirty, cramped and full of New Yorkers.

Chelmsford, Essex - Chav Capital City of the UK.

Milan & Bologna (where i currently preside) - fairly dull, gray, monotonous cities with crap weather 8 months of the year and thereafter for the other 4, its just plain lousy.

Paradoxically, the worst places I've been are the cities of my own region: Normandy. I'm not talking about small villages or small towns, and I'm obviously not talking about the countryside (which is beautiful), but I'm talking about medium-sized cities like Flers, Argentan, Saint-Lô, Lisieux, Vire, Falaise... all these cities that have been destroyed during WWII and have been rebuilt following the same pattern (which obviously was not the prettiest one). They had to be quick, so they did not really care about rearranging the cities as they were before. These cities are grey, gloomy, sad, ugly. I never feel comfortable each time I go to any of them.

As for my experience in foreign countries, I can't remember any place that I really hated.

Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt.

Sure Alexandria's Corniche and my accommodation at the Helnan Palestine, next to Montaza Palace, were very nice but the building standards generally are very poor. While I was there last a multi-storey building collapsed. Fortunately it was a 'working" day and most people were out at the time and no-one died. Whatever building regulations may be in force are not enforced.

Cairo is massive, very crowded and very dirty. Buildings are incomplete, ostensibly to allow for expansion as families grow but in fact to avoid paying property taxes. As no-one wants to pay local taxes rubbish piles up in the streets and canals.

Even along the Nile, as one passes by villages aboard "luxury" boats one sees the rubbish simply thrown by the river as there appears to be no organised waste disposal.
