I know for the past couple of years, they actually raised a ball during the countdown to the new year. It's supposed to represent brighter times ahead for the city. Although, I haven't been in the city of Pittsburgh for First Night since 2000 when I was at a friend's house in the Allentown neighborhood.

I think the Ball Raising takes place near the Cultural District near the Highmark Building if I'm not mistaken...

Brighter times? I'm not sure if I can take that seriously.

Yeah, me neither, especially since the city, once again, did NOTHING to aggressively expand its local economy after weathering a recession...

I guess one sign of positive things is that the amount of jobs open is fairly high according to the Tribune Review (40-some thousand openings throughout the region). The article said if every one of those jobs was to be filled, the region's unemployment rate would plunge to 4.4% or somewhere around there...

Then again, I really didn't take that article very seriously...
