Big Mall Near JFK Airport To Kill A Few Hours

Thu Dec 16, 2010 7:22 pm

Anyone know of a good mall not too far from JFK airport to kill a few hours between flights? I don't really feel like heading into Manhattan.

Thanks for any suggestions.

About the closest is Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream. It's about 15 minutes away by car, although I'm not sure about reaching there by public transportation.

Hmm, it's going to be tough. You really need to get out of Queens to get to the really big and interesting malls, and getting to any of them by public transport would probably take longer and be more hassle than just going to Manhattan. That said, you could always try the Rego Center Mall which is in Rego Park (right near where I live). Parts of it are very new, only opened a few months back. Includes the usual suspects: Costco, Century 21, Kohls, TJ Maxx (new section) and Bed Bath and Beyond, Sears, Old Navy (old section) as well as some others. Take the airtrain to Jamaica, then the E line subway to Forest Hills / Continental Ave 71st and transfer to the M or R subway (same direction) another two stops to 63rd Dr Rego Park. Sounds complex, but it's actually straightforward and should take less than 30 mins. From there, it's only one more subway stop to Woodhaven Blvd, or a brisk 5-10 min walk west (Manhattan bound) along Queens Boulevard to the Queens Center Mall, which has a Macys, JC Penneys and many many smaller specialty stores. Good luck and enjoy!

If have sometime, go to Roosevelt Field Mall, in Garden City, Long Island. It's worth the trip.

Exit JFK, take Belt Pkwy (eb). Exit onto Southern State Pkwy (eb) to Meadowbrook State Pkwy (nb).
Exit Stewart Ave. Have fun.

Yes, Rego Center Mall is pretty new and you could also visit Queens Center Mall which is just across the Rego Mall.
It's a cultural thing.

Teahan

Green Acres Mall really is your best bet. Its the largest mall in that area and its 15 minutes away.

I dont know what a few hours is but I would also recommend Roosevelt Field mall but figure 30 minutes each way and add 20 minutes each way if this comes before the Christmas holiday as it gets BUSY. Also somewhat aviation related as its where Charles Lindbergh began his historic trip to Paris.

As a native New Yorker (and back home as of last night!) i would not recommend visiting Green Acres Mall. There's not too much there, and it's not in the best of neighborhoods either. Queens Center Mall in Rego Park or Roosevelt Field Mall out in Garden City are your best bets. If you only have a few hours at JFK I would just stay in the airport, security is known for not exactly being quick, and many of the terminals have lots of stores in them!

If you're intent on leaving the airport for a few hours, grab a taxi over to Lenny's Clam Bar in Howard Beach. Some of the best food you'll ever have!

Thanks, everyone!
I ended up spending an hour and a half at Green Acres. Not the most interesting place in the world, but good enough to pass the time. I would probably try Rego next time.

Cheers.

Whats wrong with the neighbourhood? I have been there, I seems to be quite normal. Really nothing will happen to him if he goes there.

Call me paranoid, but I have heard a number of horror stories regarding the area and particularly that mall and its parking lot; it's very convenient in the summer especially when coming back from the beach, but otherwise I would not go to that mall. I remember when I was younger and we went to that mall, my mom wouldn't let me get into the car until she walked around it to make sure nobody was hiding.

I've never had a bad experience myself there (apart from poor customer service) but I've just never felt as comfortable at Green Acres as I would feel at, say, Roosevelt Field.

There were some issues years ago, but they got blown out of proportion - for a while, it was the "car theft" capital of Long Island, until police discovered that while there were some actual thefts, it became the place to make your car disappear when you couldn't make payments, while reporting it stolen and collecting the insurance money. It's no more dangerous than any other mall - it's not as convenient to me these days, but I don't hesitate to go there when I'm in the area.
