9/11 First Responders On The Daily Show

That's really powerful...I hate how the word "hero" gets thrown around, but if you went in there on that day, in my book, you actually are a hero. Terrible how these people are treated by US politics.

The worst part for these vicitms was the order of President Bush to the EPA to declare the area 'safe' as to its air from the substances that have sickened these people. Had proper practices been put in, including using severe contamination 'moon suits', high level breathing filters, strict cleanups, then these people would have had a far less chance of them ending up in their current conditions. In my opinion, any and all monies needed to help these people should be spent by our government - it is our responsibility.

Didn't know about that - even more so a reason to take care of these people.

Three things I really want to do, right now, in no particular order:

Cry.

Throw up.

Commit grievous bodily harm to every single senator (as far as I'm concerned, they don't deserve the capital S anymore) and staffer who participated in, supported, or did nothing to prevent this filibuster.

This is an outrageous travesty, and I sincerely hope that every single one of those dirtbags dies a horrific death.

Excellent point made,

Senator Kyle thinks it's disrespectful for him to work around Christmas, yet the NYPD and FDNY are out there on Christmas day doing their jobs. And during Christmas 2001 the trade Union members worked through Christmas to locate the remains of victims and bring them back to their families, yet United States Senators cannot work around Christmas.

And if I see another Republican crying I think i'm going to throw up.

Seriously. My only reaction to this is: WTF?!?! I can't believe there are right wingers claiming there's no scientific evidence these 9/11 first responders can prove their ailments are linked to working at the site. Ever heard of lead, asbestos, hydrogen sulfide, et al?? Morons.

That's not the issue with this vote. The issue was that enough Republicans in Congress thought the price tag was too high, or so they say. I just cannot comprehend the reasoning behind that one. It's the very definition of evil, and again I would not shed one tear if every single one of them turned up dead.

There's a video out there of a US Rep going ape-shit out on the floor the first time it got voted down, and if you think my wording is harsh, you should check it out.

Sure it is - just heard Charles Krauthammer today blathering on about how the cost cannot be justified when there is no scientific evidence.

Right...like there is "no" scientific evidence of global warming. And since when did real "evidence" play any part in right-wing manipulation ("Nothing will ever be the same again and anyone who disagrees with anything we do is a traitor") of 9/11? After all, there was no evidence at all of Iraq's connections to 9/11, but that no evidence was enough to spend orders of magnitude more money than this on killing people and leaving the entire region destabilized...but when it comes to health care...must be communism!

I know, we could just force Colon Powell to present a power-point showing the mobile cancer labs at ground zero ten years ago, and then perhaps we could get this bill through? Wait, they might just use that "evidence" to bomb the first response people instead of giving them health care...cancel that ideal...

Whatever happened to just being a good person. Giving health care to these men and women should not be labeled as socialism, giving to the poor shouldn't be considered socialist. These politicians should be ashamed of themselves.

EPA was referring to New York and the area around Ground Zero in general. Everyone knew that Ground Zero was contaminated with all sort of sh**, which was why wearing protective equipment was SOP. The problem was, there was a lack of it in the beginning, it made communication impossible, and it was an allround nuisance to wear in the heat of Ground Zero.

But don't take my word for it, here's what one of the people who worked on the pile have to say: http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?postid=6656554#post6656554 (check the follow-up posts as well).

Having said that, I agree that it's shameful that this bill has been struck down.

Do they really need evidence?
After all the House could just say something along the line of "those men didn't leave their country alone when everyone else was still in a state of shock, and now we are not going to leave them alone."

I could be totally wrong, but I feel (no more no less) that their refusal has something to do with "Obamacare". The Dems could argue that state could have saved 7.x (or at least 4) billion Dollars plus the billions spent on medicAid and mediCare every year if universal healthcare would exist in the U.S. Dems could say that relatively poor families weren't "2nd class Americans" compared to 9/11 responders, and that many of them would have helped too and already have helped "to make America great". Just a thought.

I do not care about party affiliation, I do not care about political beliefs, I do not care about whether some Senators feel like their "institution" is being "disrespected," but I do know that if I were on Capitol Hill, I would spend every waking moment I had attempting to get our Heroes the health care they deserve and so desperately need.

This is an absolute disgrace to our great Nation. This partisanship has gone too far. I, for one, am absolutely DISGUSTED that this has been allowed to happen. I will lose EVERY ounce of respect I had for the elected leaders that allow our Nation to continue treating the very people that put their lives at risk on a daily basis to uphold our Constitution. What is so f***ing pathetic is that these are largely the same people who would go out of their way to support a member of the Armed Services, as if they are the only ones who make sacrifices (including their lives).

Partisan hypocrisy at its absolute finest, only instead of money, they're playing with peoples' lives.

So disappointed...

Indeed, that could be a factor as well as a fear that it could set a precedent for other major toxic site situations where the government would have to pick up the tab.

This was a Federal decision, the EPA, along with OSHA (workplace safety). NY City agencies, under then Mayor Giuliani, did nothing for many weeks to enforce worker safety and environmental monitoring laws. In large part this is because of the pressure to 'get Wall Street' back to work ASAP, so not to show that 'the terrorists won', and to get workers in the nearby area back to work. The use of proper gear would have slowed down the possible saving of some lives and recovering more bodies in the first days as well as getting the area reopened for business. I visited as close as the public could get to the site about 10 days after the attacks (Broadway). After I left the area and for a few days, my throat was scratchy. There was a thin layer of dust all over, like from a dusting of snow in the area all the way up to City Hall.

Count me as a Republican who is absolutely disgusted with my party's failure to provide these brave Americans with the benefits that they truly earned.
