Haiti Jails An Aid Worker

Sat Dec 18, 2010 1:47 am

Accounts differ as to what happened next, but the father believes the child survived and that Waggoner kidnapped him, Piechowski said.

Waggoner's supporters, including two physicians, have said the child died, and his body was cremated because the father would not claim the remains.

I think it's time for there to be some serious discussion between the U.S. and Haiti about their legal systems and the kinds of evidence that they are going to require before jailing an aid worker. Obviously, aid workers can do horrible things, but the charges in this case seem absolutely absurd. The child died. People attested that he died and that he was cremated.

Then the dad comes back with a mere accusation and this man winds up in jail. If Haiti is going to treat relief workers in this manner, then maybe they need to stop getting relief workers.

The only kidnapping that happened is when the judge ordered the aid worker held. A clear cut case of kidnapping for ransom. Someone will pay the father and the judge off and he will go free soon enough.

As for pulling out of the country: they know what's going on. When you're dealing with a nearly lawless society, you can expect that sometimes a corrupt person will become the law.
