Larry David: Thanks For Tax Cut!

Thu Dec 23, 2010 8:06 pm

A bit of tongue-in-cheek here from the co-creator of Seinfeld, who is receiving just under a billion dollars (in bits and pieces) in the show's syndication deal.

THERE is a God! It passed! The Bush tax cuts have been extended two years for the upper bracketeers, of which I am a proud member, thank you very much. I’m the last person in the world I’d want to be beside, but I am beside myself! This is a life changer, I tell you. A life changer!

Not sure how he intended this to go over though...or am I just not getting it?

I'm pretty sure it's sarcasm, like he's saying that extending the tax cuts for the rich is reeaaaaaaaaallllly going to turn everything around. I could be wrong, but that's what it feels like to me.

Did you read it?

It’s also going to be a boon for my health. After years of coveting them, I’ll finally be able to afford blueberries. Did you know they have a lot of antioxidants, which prevent cancer? Cancer! This tax cut just might save my life. Who said Republicans don’t support health care? I’m going to have the blueberries with my cereal, and I’m not talking Special K. Those days are over. It’s nothing but real granola from now on. The kind you get in the plastic bins in health food stores. Did someone say “organic”?

Funny, I had exactly the same reaction! I knew it was supposed to be tongue in cheek, but somehow I still didn't quite get it. Then again, I don't quite get "Curb Your Enthusiasm" either. Maybe my humor circuits need a tune-up.

Larry David is more than welcome to write a larger check than necessary to the United States government if he doesn't feel he is paying enough taxes.

Will he? Nah, probably not, obviously.

Never understood why so many wealthy americans are ok with the rates the pay for taxes. Not trying to open up a debate, but just on general principle that as I've gotten wealthier myself, I've also gotten a bit more... miserly, shall we say... I look back at some of the purchases I've made further back in my youth and just shake my head sometimes... Anyway, if/when I ever get to a level like that, there's no way I'll be alright with higher taxes, loss of tax breaks, etc...

As Bill Gates Sr. put it so well - you could do that if you wanted to, but they'd just send it back.

I think as one gets to a certain point...say billions...they realize they'll never live long enough to use/spend it all anyhow. That would at least partially explain the attitude of a Warren Buffett or Bill Gates regarding their money. On the other hand there are the Larry Ellisons who are trying to spend it all before their time is up.

I think you suspect you might not be "getting it" simply because it's not all that funny, and it should be, as it bears Larry David's imprimatur.

Yeah I can't listen to wealthy liberals complain about their lower taxes. Why do they want taxes to be higher? Whatever ultimate objectives they want those higher taxes to accomplish, why not use their own wealth toward getting them accomplished within the private sector?

Oh, no they won't:

http://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/pd/gift/gift.htm

It is extremely easy to donate money to the U.S. government, yet only $3M was donated last year. Maybe wealthy liberals should put their money where their mouth is. But they won't. Hypocrites.

Meanwhile, I appreciate that my taxes won't be raised for at least the next two years, because contrary to popular belief, not everybody who is in a household making over $250,000 a year is some multi-billionaire software guru who can "easily" afford higher tax rates.

I read it, frankly, I do not get it either. I know he has a different sense of humor. He is obviously a wealthy man who can afford anything he wants. He seems to be poking fun at the wealthy who say they just need these tax cuts to survive, and yet I really do not get his points. Is he for or against the tax cuts? Is he laughing at the wealthy, who complain of the hardship of paying more taxes? Is he laughing at,or sympathizing with the common man who does have to scrimp a little while on vacation? Maybe his point is, try and figure it out, it seems to work both ways.

Oh, I'll find a way, don't you worry. There are a few things I'd do if I had billions lying around, hell one's even kind of altruistic (in a ridiculously mean spirited way, I have to admit, but probably ultimately good...). The point is, I can of better/cooler things than taxes to buy into at that level. Like my little immortality project, for example...

It was toungue in cheek. I suspect he would have accepted the modest increases in Federal income taxes on higher incomes as a small price to pay for our country.

Got one taker already...

Some of these guys have no imagination though. I mean look at Ellison - a 40 acre Japanese garden he's never home to look at? Tens of millions down the tubes annually funding an America's Cup team??

...as would most any of us, if there were the remotest chance it could legitimately help.

But it cannot.

Our issue is not inadequate revenue; it's excessive spending, exclusively.
