Which IPod Should I Buy?

Mon Dec 27, 2010 4:25 pm

I own an iPod nano, 2nd Generation, 4GB. The only problem with it is the fact, that I have collected more than 4GB of music, in the meantime. And I'm getting tired of having to make a selection, each time, what songs should be on the iPod.
For the rest, I never had any problems with it.

So now I'm thinking about getting a new one, either a Nano 5th Gen., with 16 GB, or a Classic with 160GB. This might sound silly, but I found them both on eBay, for the same price of 250€. Both new.

Normally I'd say, I take the classic. But there are some things, I don't like about it. First the size. I like the small size of the Nanos (the older ones). And I know some people, who had only problems with the classic iPods, like ill functioning software.

At the moment I have about 8GB of music on my computer, but it will get more. So 16 GB is the minimum I would go for..
160GB could mean, getting this classic Pod and never have to buy another one. If the technical issues are solved, what I don't know.

250€ is the maximum I could afford.

So, what would you propose to me? Thx for your advice!

the new Nano is IMO too small.
You might want to look at a 16GB iPod Touch too. Not sure if you can get one for €250 though, maybe if you find a discounted one.

After going to the Touch, I honestly can't recommend any other iPod model. Find a way to make the Touch work and you won't regret it.

How much is the iPod Touch in Germany?

Here in Canada the 32GB (3rd gen) version is $279.99 which is about €210. So well under your budget.

You have more than enough space for your songs, plus you can buy your songs (and apps) direct from the system itself via wifi.

First of, how much music are planning to storage?
I bought a 160gb, a year ago, on Ebay. Paid US$ 217,00. It fits me well, since i am approaching 5k songs.
Unless you are planning to play games, i'd buy a classic version. Otherwise, get the Ipod Touch. But that'll cost a bit more.

I'm very happy with my 5th Gen 16GB, which I bought after the 6th Gen came out because I vastly prefer a clickwheel to a touchscreen.

Don't know about Germany, but here in the Netherlands the 8GB model retails for 200 Euro, the 16GB model for 300.
With Germany upping their VAT rates to match ours last year, I don't think the German price will be much lower.

I have a 5G nano 8GB which I am very happy with. I wanted something small and light for when I am cycling, and something without a touch screen (when your fingers are cold and covered in grease and mud when cycling, you really don't want to be faffing around with a touch screen and risking scratching it!).

Having said that the 6G nano is really nice, my friend has one and wears it like a watch, making it handy for running.

The Touch is IMO a bit big for exercise, I'd rather get an iPhone that has the ability to make calls as well considering it is pretty much identical, and keep my nano for cycling

I started with an 8g that the head phone jack screwed up on, so I bought the 80g Classic, it was great, intil the USB port screwed up, and it was no longer recognized my I-Tunes, so I bought another Classic that was now a 120g. I used the 80g as my dirty I-Pod (Gym, running, laying out by the pool) I couldn't add songs, but it would charge, and the 120g when traveling or hanging around the house. 80g finally got where it would no longer charge so I tossed it. On a flight from ATL-BCN I think I left the 120g in the seat pocket, so in AMS I bought another Classic which is now 160g. I have as many songs as I can think of adding, and a few movies and I am only up to 12g with 108g of free space, so as someone who has bought several I-pods, unless you are planning to put 100 movies on it, I think you should go with the 16g I-pod Touch. It also has Bluetooth, so you can get the wireless headphones, which are awesome if you exercise a lot?

Wow, those prices seem kinda high.. But then again, they are including VAT, correct?

Would it not be cheaper/easier just to order an iPod Touch (or Nano/Classic) via the US or Canada?

I highly recommend you go for the 5th Gen Nano. The size is perfect, great add-ons (radio) not to mention increased capacity, and the screen doesn't wear out like the older generations did.
I sadly couldn't find any 5G Nanos (I looked everywhere) so I went for the 6G-which is smaller and has a touch-screen and while it does everything it's supposed to, it's a huge jump. The 5G Nano was perfect.
As for the classic-while the size is nice, I've never needed all that capacity, plus it's not as portable as a Nano. Plus I noticed the older generations are a bit 'clunky' when it comes to using them, and for some reason the audio just hurts my ears. For the last 3-4 years, I've never considered buying a Classic. HOWEVER-apparently the new 7G Classic is really good-no failures, 'clunkiness' etc. like with older models.
