#1 Auburn Vs. #2 Oregon: Nat'l Championship Thread

Sun Jan 09, 2011 10:05 pm

Well folks this is it, the season's come down to this. The Auburn Tigers vs. the Oregon Ducks. Anyone who follows College Football knows this game is kind of a big deal. Two of the best offenses in the country will square off in Glendale, Ariz. for what'll surely be one of the best, most entertaining games of the year.

Discuss, make predictions here! I think the defenses will all be at risk for cardiac arrest by the end of the game, and the final score will be something like 45-42, that is if the game doesn't go into overtime.

Also, discuss recent bowl games too if you want.

It pains me to say this... but, *shivers* *cough* go ducks *cough* *ahem*.

Cheers!

I can't wait!!!!

I am getting nervous already anticipating this game. This should be a great game.

I predict (*gulp*) Oregon defeats Auburn 45-36.

Go Ducks!

I personally don't give a crap. The "championship" lost credibility with me when they started playing post January 2nd. I'll save you all the rest of the tripe on how I feel about the "championship" process.

Not many people are happy with the NCAA "championship" process. Plus, there are WAAAAAY too many bowl games. I don't really care much about the bowl games until a Pac-10 team is in, then I want the Pac-10 to win. Yes, I am glad Stanford won.

This seems to be the season of upsets. Texas A&M won, the Seahawks won. I hope the Ducks keep the theme going. I will be in Vegas tomorrow during the game, so I am sure I will have plenty of opportunities to see key plays. One thing's for sure: I will NOT bet on the game. The best way to get my team to lose is for me to bet on them! Why do you think the Riders lost Grey Cup this year? Although, if I put $10 on each team.... LOL

While I agree the process sucks, I think this year was a rare one where the two truly best teams in the nation are playing for the national championship.

I don't mind that there are so many bowl games, it's nice to have a football game on almost everyday after mid-December through the National Championship. I wish that there weren't so many conference tie-ins, so that we could see some interesting matchups that otherwise wouldn't usually occur, such as more Pac-10 vs. SEC matchups, or more room for the highly ranked non-AQs to face other highly ranked AQ opponents who didn't make it to a BCS bowl game.

For example, the bowl games I REALLY wanted to see this year that wasn't possible thanks to conference tie-ins, was Boise State vs. LSU. Or Nevada vs. Nebraska.

ESPN isn't really television. But I just think it will be a shame if a team named the "Ducks" win a national championship. Though they did of course put the whomping on all sorts of cats and devils and such this year.

Matching punts followed by matching interceptions. Surprised it's still 0-0 halfway through the first quarter.

So far a really "meh" game. I honestly had much higher expectations. I was expecting this game would be almost as good as the 2006 Rose Bowl between Texas and USC. That game had more hype throughout the season, but this one certainly had its share. To this point, I'm pretty disappointed.

Were you expecting to see the combined 75 points that the linesmakers in Vegas expected?

With these defenses?

I wasn't.

What defenses?

Neither one of these defenses is actually playing real well. Thomas can't make the correct zone read to save his life, and Newton has 0 touch on his deep ball.

The only reason both of these teams aren't in the 30s right now is their own stupid mistakes.

Dreadful.

First off, congrats to Auburn... I am very proud of my Ducks and it was definitely a season to remember.

That said, Auburn really needs to clean themselves up because they are one of the dirtiest teams I've ever watched as a whole.

Go Ducks.

Uh, what game were YOU watching? There was constant defensive pressure on both teams. Yes, there were a lot of miscues resulting in lost scoring opportunities, but those are ultimately created by good defense in many cases.

Either way, it was a great game - although Auburn definitely had some unsportsmanlike moments on the field.

For me it was an anti-climactic game. And no, not because it wasn't a shootout, but because I think what was being played out on the field was not the quality of play that should be expected from a number 1 and number 2 team. TCU and Stanford played better in their bowl games than Oregon and Auburn are playing. Hell, I think even Boise State played more impressively (after the first quarter) in their bowl game than Oregon and Auburn did. Then again I'm biased.

Here's why I was disappointed in the game:

Turnovers and mistakes...... tons of overthrowing, underthrowing, fumbles, mistakes.
Coaching decisions...... Oregon let 30 crucial seconds run out with 1:30 left on the clock before finally calling a timeout. This is one of a few examples of clock mismanagement and bad plays.
Terrible missed calls by the refs...... I saw at least 3 facemasks and other blatant violations on both teams which were never flagged.
Bad sportsmanlike conduct...... I don't think that needs any explanation.
Slippery field...... I think this was probably most detrimental of all. It's hard to get any kind of offense or defense going when your players are slip sliding all over the place.
Date of game...... Bowl games should be no later than New Year's Day. I think this also contributed to the sloppy play.
Oregon's uniforms... Make-your-eyes-bleed Lime Green shoes and socks... Really???

Now that the championship is over, if I were to say who the best teams are this season... I would rank 1. Stanford, 2. Auburn, 3. TCU, 4. Oregon (All four being very close). Yes, Oregon beat Stanford, but the more I look back to that game, the more I think it could have gone either way, and that Stanford's level of play in other games has been on par with Oregon's.

If Oregon had played well tonight, they'd be ahead; but considering the way they played, I'm convinced a rematch would have Stanford come out ahead. As one San Jose Mercury News Columnist put it:

Quoting Tim Kawakami (Reply 18):
Stanford might not have a better roster than Auburn and, yes, the Cardinal was stampeded late on Oregon's home field last October.

But on that stage in Glendale, Ariz., under those bright lights, the Cardinal would have been superior to either.

Better big-game coach. Far, far better quarterback. Better discipline. Superior result.

It would've been fun to see a shootout, but I wasn't disappointed it wasn't. I enjoy a good defensive showdown. I was disappointed that it was probably one of, if not the sloppiest BCS National Championship to date. That's coming from watching a marathon of National Championships on ESPN Classic before the game, lol.

I think the 2011 BCS National Championship has been the biggest reason so far, in my book, for a plus-one or a playoff of some kind.

Cheers!

What a yawn of a game. The field goal at the end was so anticlimactic. Give the FBS Championship to TCU be default.

1. Auburn cheated, paid Cam $180K or $200K when my alma mater (MSU) wouldn't, and they will eventually get what's coming to them (see Arkansas' statements about the recruitment of Michael Dyer as well).

2. Auburn, however, did legitimately win the BCS championship. Congratulations. For now.

3. Auburn played dirty and has played dirty all year. Good calls from the refs on Fairley and Smith.

4. Too bad they couldn't get some MSU grass out there because that field was awful.

5. Yes Virginia, the SEC actually stands for Seemingly Endless Championships. Best college football conference in the land. In the AP poll today the top 5 teams in the SECW are in the top 15 (with USC trailing at 22).

6. I can't stand Trooper Taylor and his asinine "rah rah I wear my cap backwards like an 18 year-old" act. And he's a cheater.

7. Auburn's going to miss Malzahn next year, big time. More than MSU is going to miss Manny Diaz (respectively the best OC and DC in the SEC this past season).

8. However, I'm glad that the SEC won another championship, even though it's tainted, and I'm glad my Auburn friends have gotten to enjoy this season. Too bad it's not legit like their 14-0 season was.
