Did Bombardier Build A Series Of Jet Skies?

Tue Jan 11, 2011 11:40 pm

I was talking with some people about jet skies, and somebody said something about Bombardier had build one of the best jet ski ever built. Now knowing Bombardier builds airliners, locomotives and rail cars, I thought it would be cool to own a jet ski built by them in the future. I tried to find a Bombardier jet ski on the I-Net, but no dice, now they did build ATV's. Do anybody know if Bombardier built jet-skies?

They did indeed and I had one for years. I believe they are operated through the SeaDoo brand. They are an absolute blast.

I could easily get past 65mph on the lake.

The company began life in the '30s building snowmobiles. In the '70s came the rail business with the purchase of Lohner-Rotax. The aircraft business arrived with the purchase of Canadair and Short Brothers in the '80s, Learjet and de Havilland Canada in the '90s.

From what I understand, not only did they invent the Ski-doo/snowmobile, but also the personal water craft/PWC (what Sea-doo's and JetSki's are).

Bombardier is a very diversified company with their aquisition of Austrian company Rotax (I actually had the pleasure of visiting their headquarters in Gunskirchen, Austria a number of years ago) Bombardier now builds engines for Motorcycles, Go-Karts (Rotax is a big name in Karting), and of course Ski-doo's among others.

Back to the original question, the Sea-doo brand is one of the finest makes of PWC on the market and chances are if you have been on quite a few PWCs, then you have probably been on a Bombardier.

Don't forget Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors. They picked up those brands when Outboard Marine Corporation went under early last decade. I don't think they bought the OMC Sterndrive division though, just the outboards.

Rotax powers the Predator UAVS as well. Also I think that their engines have found their way into some motorcycles.

They even made motorcycles for a while under the "Can-Am" brand, starting in 1973, although that was eventually licensed to Armstrong/CCM and production ended in 1987. The brand name was brought back in 2006 for ATVs by the spin-off Bombardier Recreational Products.

The company logos on this page show the Bombardier name and logo prominently displayed at several points, and most Can-Am bikes (at least the older ones that I'm familiar with) said "Bombardier" on the engine casing...check out this pic for an example.

Mystery solved !

quote= exFATboy, reply=9 They even made motorcycles for a while under the "Can-Am" brand

Thank you exFATboy ! I live in a small village in western Indiana, near Terre Haute; our county is very "scenic", so we get a lot of tourist traffic in the summer, both cars, classic cars, and a lot of motorcycles. We have a very historic old grist mill, which is owned and operated by my friend, Mike Roe. The mill is right beside the covered bridge, and the two together are the main tourist attraction in the county. Summer before last, two old "geezers" came whipping into the mill parking lot on two of the strangest looking motorcycles I had ever seen. Both were 3 wheelers, but the crazy things looked like they were going backwards ! Two wheels on the front, one wheel in back; plus, the front wheels didn't look like motorcycle wheels..........much smaller, and wider. They were Can-Ams ! I'm thinking.......who the hell makes these crazy looking things ? Now I know !

I saw a few more now and then, but apparently they didn't "catch on", as I don't recall seeing any this past summer.

The biggest "thing" in motorcycles in the last few years has been Hondas converted into 3 wheelers; at least THEY have the 2 wheels in back ! You would never know that "times are tough" around here in the summer, with dozens of people whizzing all over the place on $ 40,000 3-wheeler MC's !

BTW.........speaking of Bombardier.........we have this huge 10 day festival in October; right after 9-11-01, as you know, a lot of airlines laid a lot of people off. During the festival that year, there was a couple who had just bought a food concession trailer, and they rented space from another friend of mine. The guy was a laid-off pilot, ( forget the company), but anyway we got acquainted pretty good, and he told me he flew a Bombardier Jet. He said they were good planes, but that he dearly HATED to fly them ! He explained his reasoning, but not being a pilot myself, I didn't understand too much of what he told me..........other than that on his other job, he had flown Boeings, and that he DEFINITELY preferred them to the Bombardier's ! ( hope there aren't any Bombardier guys reading this )

So I guess this company makes a little bit of everything ! Snowmobiles, jet ski's, motorcycles, Jet Airliners, ........must have a hell of a big plant !

As it's usually the case in companies producing so many things, they rather have hell of a lot of plants

That's because Jet Ski is a Kawasaki brand name and trade mark so the answer to your question is no, Bombardier have never built a Jet Ski.

Why the quotes?

Well, one could say that it is Bombardier Inc. that has actually been separated from the parent. BRP is owned by the Bombardier family.

Except, of course, that Jet Ski is a genericized trademark.

Boeings are big sexy limo's. Bombardier aircraft are small crowded taxi's.

I really doubt it was the plane itself, more likely the type of flying they do.

BBD is not an aviation company, they are a transportation company. They build ski lifts, mass-transit vehicles, etc. I think they even make small boats/ships. They don't make cars, but just about anything else that moves under its own power.
