What The... Airport Carpet Website?!

Thu Jan 27, 2011 7:01 pm

I've just stumbled upon this article on CNN, and I have to say, I'm not quite sure what to make of it... I'm guessing there is supposed to be a humourous element to it (My favourite so far is the comment about the carpet at EDI)

Have any of you seen this site before? What do you make of your local airport carpeting?

Article:

Nothing but praises for ATL's carpet on that site.

I've seen it ripped and torn before, though... so much for the impossible.
The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.

LOL, I've seen that website before. It's almost as comical as urinal.net.

I think between CNN and here, the site's been nuked......

I guess there's people interested in just about anything when it comes to buildings. I actually know of a site that has an entire section devoted to casino carpets.

Clearly the site doesn't have a very rug-ged server

There was a site for photographs of airport car-parks. And people think us plane lovers are strange!

I just had to check out this website and its actually quite amusing the way they describe the texture, pattern, color of each airport's carpet. I'm tempted to take a few pics and submit them for use. Be itneresting to see what they come up with.

Apparently MEX's carpet miraculously changes color every year and was to be canonized? (Per website)

It makes me think of all the wear and tear airport carpet must endure on a regular basis.
I wonder how often an airport has to replace its carpet? It surely must be an expensive job!

I've always thought of carpet as relatively unhygienic, and much prefer marble (style) flooring that can easily be washed... especially in high traffic places like airports.

The internet never ceases to amaze!

Marble like floors might be easier for upkeep, however can be an insurance nightmare. Tons of people will invariably slip on them especially if they are located any where near open public entrances.

One interesting thing I learned long time ago that is unique with airport design is that due to people having bags with wheels and carts, its often a very tough choice to select flooring. Most often it comes down to between carpets or very polished surfaces as various other rougher stone like surfaces which do have good aesthetics, safety and longevity cannot be used without creating too much resistance with wheels rolling over them and the noise accompanying it. Hence with dangers surrounding surfaces that are simply too slippery if wet, carpets are often a best choice at airports.

I liked that Pierelli flooring. You remember, the rubber tiles with the raised circles on them. BN had this flooring in the DAL terminal. Totally non skid and wore very well. We have some friends that tiled their kitchen in this stuff in black. Looked great.

Wow. That is all I can say. Wow.

The description of the carpet in Buffalo?

"Local legend has it that hidden in the pattern of the carpet at BUF is a map displaying the lost treasure of Millard Fillmore, 13th President of the United States. Fillmore was descended from pirates - his great-grandfather had been press-ganged into the service of the infamous peg-leg Captain John Philips - and historians believe that a piratical booty-lust was passed down to him from generation to generation. Fillmore's inordinate love of parrots was seen as added proof of this theory. BUF's carpet design has been copied exactly from the carpet found in Fillmore's Buffalo residence at the time of his death in the vain hope that some passing traveler might uncover what Fillmore scholars have not been able to for 130 years."

The lost treasure of Millard Fillmore?!?! wtf?

Interesting site, if a bit odd.
According to that site, RNO has re-carpeted recently: RNO's former carpet was patterned with fallen Cottonwood leaves and was, in my opinion, remarkably attractive and well-suited to the area. The carpet currently shown for RNO on the linked website is just sort of "meh..." and looks like nothing so much as a big wad of dryer lint from a load of blue jeans.

And a cool site dieiscast.com is! When you consider the foot traffic, errant cigarette butts, spilled alcoholic drinks, and harsh cleaning products that casino carpets have to endure while maintaining stability in their vivid colors and clarity in their intricate patterns, you've got to be impressed.

I mean, it's sad enough that we all know that CO uses GE engines on most of their aircraft, but...

... it's sadder that this thread has generated this much discussion.
