Lake Vostok In Antarctica

Fri Jan 28, 2011 2:52 pm

It seems that the Russian drillers are almost through 4km of glacier to reach this, as yet, pristine lake. 50m to go, but the biting winter cold is on its way back and things may have to wait.

No doubt some enterprising soul will start bottling what's down there as a unique and very exclusive water.

Although this is a controversial project, there are a number of subglacial lakes that have been identified in Antarctica since Lake Vostok was discovered. It's not really unique. If I remember right, they had planned on releasing some kind of "hydrobot" to explore the lake after they reached it with the drill. I'm not sure if that's still the case.

Keep in mind this is considered by some to be a test run for exploring below the ice on Jupiter's moon Europa.

It's an interesting project, that's for sure!

February 6 (according to the article) marks already the end of the suitable period.

The coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth (-89°C) was recorded on 21 July 1983 at Lake Vostok. Average temperature there during the "summer" from December to February is around -30°C.

And March 20 marks the end of summer. The two are not the same!

Winter does not officially begin til June 21 this year.

This should never, ever be allowed.

Then just wash your hands frequently, and refrain from rubbing your eyes, nose and mouth, get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of water, exercise, eat a balanced diet, and take 1000mg of Vitamin C a day!

Unfortunately if they do breech the 'barrier' and drill through to the water they'll probably contaminate it with the drill bit or other piece of equipment. Even if it melts its way through the ice and seals itself in....we'll see. That's just my opinion, and i would love to be proven wrong and i hope that they're still taking every precaution in their 'race' for the last 50m. Let's hope they took every precaution possible, but even then......it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Cheers

This is one reason it's been taking so long. They were nearly there a few years ago, but had to go back to the drawing board when the contamination issue was raised.

Not in the Southern Hemisphere! (Or this part of it at least)

28 Feb marks the end of summer and 1 June marks the start of winter.
