Reflecting On A Pop-up Ad From 2005

Thu Feb 03, 2011 11:35 pm

I was reflecting on a discussion in 2005 when there was a common advertisement on A.net that advocated "punching out" President George W. Bush to win an Xbox 360.

Now that it's 2011, what is the general consensus of the appropriateness of such an ad? Have there been similar ads posted on A.net targeting President Obama? I'm not advocating such an ad, but if one were to exist, would it be met with the same "ha ha" light-hearted acceptance as the Bush-targeted ad? Or would it be considered racist hate speech and promoting violence or (gasp) terrorism?

I'm not going to dig into specifics of either Bush's or Obama's politics, but would it be safe to say that there is a blatant double-standard that exists in regards to how both men are (or should be) perceived and treated by the media and the public spotlight? Has the American mindset changed so much in just over 5 years, that a double-standard is the new norm and should be accepted with open arms?

Not sure about that, but it did remind me of:

I guess I'm on the side that it's not terrorism, it's just severe dislike.

And it made me dig up the old classic:

Sock and Awe
The gun is NOT a precious symbol of freedom
It is a deadly cancer on American society
Those who believe otherwise are consumed by an ideology
That is impervious to evidence

I don't know if it promoted terrorism, but it definitely promoted annoyance (as all pop-ups do...)
