Should MLS Soccer Abolish Salary Caps?

Fri Feb 04, 2011 11:05 pm

Personally i'm in favor of keeping the system as it is. Soccer occupies a small niche in the US and any attempt to make it a free for all will result in a few teams with deep pockets dominating the league while all others suffer ( much like La Liga with Barcelona and Real Madrid). Plus the never ending race to sign on new talent will lead to teams biting off more than they can chew and going into debt. Look at all the financial issues that some English teams have. This is a good article on European soccer's financial woes

any soccer fans opinions on this ?

MLS should, for now, keep the salary cap until it further solidifies itself in the markets they are in. Once they "establish" themselves better, and yes i think it still needs some work, then they can raise their salary cap which i think stands at $2.3 million. I don't think the league should increase the cap as i think it will not increase the quality of play. I wonder if there is a league max and min on salaries? I do look forward to seeing the expansion teams this season. Again, let them establish themselves before raising the cap or eliminating it altogether. My team, Toronto, has done very well in MLS (business wise) and the owner has money to spend so you'd think i would want them to raise the cap so we could , possible, get better players here and win !!

Spending money like theres no tomorrow isn't necessarily a winning strategy. Look at my home team the Red Bulls. In the 2010 season they inaugurated a new stadium, hired a new coach , brought over 2 famous players from Barcelona, arguably the best soccer club in the world, and still did not make it to the MLS Cup finals. Maybe things will change in the 2011 season but they still have a pretty empty trophy cabinet....

I want to see MLS get bigger here, and having the ability to create a dynasty team might help in certain markets (IE: NY, DC, LA) may be able to benefit from that. It would, with out a doubt, destroy small market teams, though.

You could argue that the Red Bulls and Galaxy's are already the powerhouse teams of MLS soccer. Red Bull alone has invested more than 300 million in their club since buying it in 2006. I do look forward to the Timbers vs Sounders matches though.....

Profitability wise, are the mod clubs making money? If they are, I don't see why a salary cap needs to be put in place. Being able to offer high salaries to big name players will only surely attract further fans to the game and also provide for increased revenues for teams in the way of sponsorships, endorsements etc

More countries should bring in these salary caps, some of the wages in the English Premier league from teams such as Chelsea & Manchester City are a disgrace!

Coming from a family of professional soccer players, I believe that pay should be based on talent and productivity instead of having such caps. If a team and the league has the structure that will allow for higher pay for both of these concepts, then let it be known and pay them more. Its not difficult. In a way, you have to open the flood doors to talent. You cannot do that with salary caps.

Absolutely correct.

I think the Salary cap should be increased....if more Beckhams, Henrys and Ljundbergs come to the States...the all around play will get better. Which would lead to more U.S. players playing at a higher level, Which would lead to a much better U.S. squad in international play.

This is correct. It is very important that the league sees this. There has to be incentive and a structure that grows players.

Moreover, More better players in the U.S. will create better U.S. players in the world arena, which will make MLS, EPL, La Liga, Series A etc even more prominent in the U.S.
