RIP Gary Moore

Sun Feb 06, 2011 8:13 pm

I just heard on Sky News that Gary Moore was found dead in a hotel room in Costa del Sol. Cause of death unknown.

RIP.

That is quite sad – I had just listened to one of his tracks today and thought of him.

Oh crap - I've been a huge fan of his every since 1990, when a friend who knew I liked blues guitar gave me his copy of Still Got The Blues, which had just come out. Here's a heavy metal/hard rock guitarist (he was Ozzy's first choice to replace Randy Rhoads - Gary turned him down) who thought he'd do a little blues record, and knocked it out of the park.

He'll be sorely missed. Check out his cover of Hendrix's Red House.

Never heard of him.

My wife can't stand Gary Moore's music, she called him Gary f'ing Moore LOL, when I heard the news I said to her that her favourite guitarist had died, she said "who, Gary f'ing Moore?", when I said yes she burst into tears!

They just played Empty Rooms on the radio, I'm sure there will be quite a bit of his music played in the next couple of days. I only have one of his albums, Ballads and Blues, I dug it out this morning and gave it a blast in the car. Great stuff.

Unfortunately he never managed to become popular in the US. Maybe an Irishman playing the blues was just too weird for most people there. I just loved watching him play - he had a pretty unique style, partially due to his being left-handed but playing right-handed - if you think about it it makes sense, because you use your dominant hand, the one with the most dexterity and strength, on the fretboard. He had fearsome bends and vibrato. As a (former) guitar player, I loved just watching his hands work.

Such sad news....he was so gifted, albeit more obscure than I wished he were.

Among the Super Bowl chaos, I read of his passing from Joe Bonamassa’s Facebook update. RIP Gary—thank you for sharing your gift with us.

To be honest, I only know one of his songs "Out in the fields".

RIP.

Interesting backlash against The Sun. The official cause of death has been announced as "probable heart attack, pending further test results", but the Sun claims that he died Hendrix-style, and people are pissed.
