New "V" TV Series: What Do You Think?

Tue Feb 08, 2011 8:05 pm

As a little boy in 1983-84, I enjoyed the original "V" TV series and miniseries. Remember that one?

In 2009, they remade "V", with modern twists and themes. There was even a slight reference to the movie Independence Day (ID4), as the V saucers came in over 29 major cities, with the shadow effect and the mini-quake heralding the ship's arrival over Manhattan (like the ID4 saucers did).

I missed the first season, but I have it on DVD. I am really enjoying that.

I have been watching the 2nd season (which started on Jan. 4 this year). I missed the first episode, because I was away from home over Christmas. I am really enjoying this season too.

The new series' V aliens seem so much more convincingly human (they lack the reverberating vocal echo of the original series' aliens). The new series seems to touch on today's issues like universal health care, the Obama administration, etc. The original 1980s' series focused on a Nazi/fascist takeover of the world in alien skin. Even the V insignia back then was a stylised swastika!

I have always enjoyed alien invasion TV series and movies!

What do you think of the new "V"?

Remember, in the words of my people, "We are of peace. Always."

It's not being shown on Hulu anymore. And I'm not sorry.

It was really, really bad. Badly written, badly made, cliched like the plague, etc.

Crap.

I gave it a shot. I wanted to like it. But the writing was terrible and they tipped their hand way too soon.

I absolutely LOVE it!! I too was an original series fan... nearly wet my pants in the episode when the original Diana is revealed in this series as Anna's mother! Delicious!

And for folks who don't get it... it's SUPPOSED to be campy! I think they've done a fabulous job... high camp, yet it's also highly-produced, modern, relevant, has interesting characters, and in the second season, the real meat and plot intrigues are now coming to light... yes yes, we know they're here to breed with us... we knew pretty much from the beginning....but that's not the real secret. There going to be much more revealed as the series progresses. I'm hooked.

I'm loving it! I remember back when the original series was on I was too little and my parents wouldn't let me watch it back then. They didn't realize I was sitting in the hall behind them watching it when I was supposed to be in bed

My wife is watching it right now, she seems to enjoy it. I have never watched it, but hear the dialogue, and see bits of it.

I saw a little bit of it during it's first season. I didn't find it awful but it just didn't "hook" me.

If that's true then it fails at being campy because I didn't find anything campy about it.

Have any of the original cast members been in it? I have not seen it yet, but might buy it on DVD?

Only Diana as a guest this season (Jane Badler) - same character - not in charge anymore. Marc Singer came in as a high official. Both very peripheral.

The original V was a fun, interesting two part mini-series which rose above it's limited TV movie budget, cheesy special effects, low end cast and simplistic writing.

The V: The Final Battle three part mini-series was a fair to middlin' sequel, but like almost all sequels, didn't live up to the original. The story really had no where to run logically.

The TV series (1984-85) was just trying to cash in on the popularity - but the story had no where to go and it got worse and worse to watch.

The new series in my opinion brought some concepts up to date. Even relatively modest CGI by today's standards beats the old special effects tremendously.

The story lines have a couple good points - the long term early Vs in disguise is one. But the plot holes are HUGE, and too simplistic in my opinion. Even the FBI cannot be so stupid as to not know that Erica Evans is a leader of the resistance, and keep her as the head of the task force trying to stop those fighting against the Visitors.

Watching this new one has it's points, and my wife who never saw the original until recently finds it mildly interesting, but not compelling.

Some stories make great movies - but terrible continuing dramas. Space invasions seem to fit that mold in my opinion. (I really, really hope they never make a sequel to Independence Day.)

This concept seems to work much better in books, and book series where details can be fleshed out.

Hmmm... really? You don't find a banished former lizard queen suddenly baring her fangs to bite the neck of and kill a recently discovered sleeper agent loyal only to her in order to spare him the wrath of her evil lizard queen daughter who wants to torture him to find out what he's learned about the human soul while undercover in the Vatican the last 15 years, and then after killing him, turning to the evil queen daughter (who banished her own mother), and with blood dripping from her lips, responding to her daughter's incredulous question asking what she's doing by saying that she's giving a loyal subject the death he deserves.... campy?

I think the failure is you not knowing and appreciating camp when you see it.

New "V" TV Series: What Do You Think?

I think it won't be on the air for long, judging by the ratings.

Shame, really - there are things about it I really like (I loved the original back in the day), but audiences aren't buying in for the most part.

I was watching it, but stopped when they stopped posting episodes on line. I can't remember the last time I watched a tv show at its regularly scheduled time because of my busy schedule. That decision by ABC is what's going to kill the show--which is bs because shows on cable networks are online for free.

They're on to her! In last night's episode, her new partner wants to launch an investigation into her... they have multiple surveillance footage of her talking to the priest.

Several days late and several dollars short. I guess the Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy is now offering classes in running an intelligence agency, and the entire V FBI contingent enrolled.

OR... could it be that they have known about her for a long time and her boss (whom we don't know is human or V) has intentionally shielded and/or observed her due to her son's importance to the V's plan??

Patience people... patience. Many more plot twists await

Not in the least. What it is, in my opinion, is just typical science fiction.

That's too bad you can't differentiate between V... with knockout Anna in stunning evening wear, stabbing subordinates with her hidden tail, her mother locked in the basement, and all the over-the-top dialogue... and Star Trek, Doctor Who, etc... cuz this is anything but typical science fiction. This approaches a parody of science fiction. And it's fabulous fun.

My thoughts: I'm entertained, and I do recommend the series to those who just want to turn off their brain and watch fast talk and nefarious alien plots made by hot women.

That's V 2009.
