Sheriff Joe For US Senate.

Tue Feb 15, 2011 3:07 pm

Looks like the early polls have him as the front runner to replace retiring John Kyl. Newt is also considering a run (again). Wonder if Joe will try to open carry at the Capitol?

I can't disagree with a lot of what Arpaio has done, but he is too much of a hardliner to succeed as a politician.

He can't be any worse than John Kyl.
Joe Arpaio will be 80 years old in 2012 and considered too old to run for a 1st. 6 year Senate term.

Even though I like Joe I agree with BMI727 he is too much of a lightning rod to ever win much like Sarah Palin. You never put real controversial figures on a ticket it just spells disaster.

Speaking of Joe, is crime lower in his county?
My only problem with his tactics is that it involves those that have not been convicted. Some of these people are innocent and should never be subjected to this sort of treatment.
Someone with an unpaid moving violation and/or missed a court date over a minor infraction would be subjected to this sort of treatment.
That's not cool.

Combined with the multimillion dollar settlements paid out to people injured or killed by his staff, you get a guy I can't like. And while the issue of illegals is indeed important, he is so focussed on that he neglects everything else.

Honestly, I used to love him. That was back in the 90s. As time has gone on without him having anyone to answer to, he has become expensive and dangerous. And embarrassing.

Would you prefer a whimpering politician to deal with the mongrels running around on the fringe of our society ? I agree the man can be bombastic ... but he loves his officers and takes allot of pride in them and his department. For me ... I will take a sheriff who is out in front defending himself and doing his job over a political wannabe like Dupnik any day.

I know he has been accused of some tough stuff and I don't know if its right or wrong ....I do know the left wing open border groups like La Raza and De Humanos hate the man....in my book he must be something right. No one is perfect ...

He will not run for Senate ...

Not concerned about those groups.
What about someone that accidentally missed a court date over a minor infraction such as not coming to a complete stop or J-walking?
Young people tend to move more frequent and it's possible that court documents get mailed to the wrong address or not forward properly. Should they be subjected to the same punishment at killers, rapist, assault & battery because of a missed court date?

I don't know how it is there, but in the county jail in my home town, you actually have convicted felons that are serving out their sentences in the county jail, instead of the state prison. In fact when I used to ride in the box, we would get called to the county jail quite a bit, and I used to see a guy I went to HS with, that was convicted of manslaughter, and he did all 8 yrs of his sentence, in the Washington Co. Jail. Another little gay dude that hacked up his buddy in the bath tub with an exacto knife and then wrote "Demon Dead" in blood all over the walls, was in there doing half of his 8 yrs for Aggrivated Assault, before he went to the State Pen, so it may be the same there? BTW, that same dude, cut his own balls off, because he wanted to be a woman! (OUCH)

Larry I assume you have some specific knowledge of this happening so I cant argue with you about it. Joe has a simple idea ... make jail a place you don't want to go ...and don't want to come back too. In Tucson we have a pretty standard county jail ( Not a tent city) .... i have a little experience with the place it is a horrible scene and a very depressing place. It should be ... and there are hard criminals and traffic violators bunking in the same rooms. A normal citizen would not want to go back there under any circumstances.

If I lived in Maricopa County, I would not have any court dates, or infractions minor or major, and I damn sure wouldn't
J-walk !

That's probably why all of us "squeaky-clean" living law abiding citizens love good old Sherrif Joe so much !

"squeaky-clean" people make mistakes too and can get caught in speed traps, accidentally stop over the line, etc. They should not be subjected to the same treatment of harden criminals.
I am all for Sheriff Joe's tactics but only for convicted criminals.

Geezer,
Is that really the America you want to live in? Really?

I was once ticketed for driving "74.5 MPH on a 50 MPH zone". Notice that 74.5 rounds up to 75, which is 50% more than the speed limit, which in that jurisdiction dramatically increased the fine. Well I MIGHT have been driving at 45MPH at the time, certainly significantly below 50 and nowhere in the universe as 75MPH. Several months later, my father, who is a stereotypical "old man driver" and frustratingly drives veeeerrrry slowly, had the same experience in the same area. (South of Pittsburgh on Rt 51, Elizabeth/Rostraver area). The District Justice in the area was, I believe, a relative of the cop.

So I hesitate on giving every cop unlimited power to, for lack of a better word, destroy people. And I see people who say, "If you abide by the law you have nothing to worry about" as naive. And dangerous.

Edit to point out that I'm on topic in that Sheriff Joe has taken on that bully persona, needs to be taken down a peg or 2 instead of given more power. Americans should not live in fear of law enforcement officers.

I some how have a feeling, that his county is not like Iran, and much of this hype is overblown, like everything else that gets reported by the media. I don't think any law-abiding citizen would have anything to worry about in his county, just the ones that think the law doesn't apply to them?

Unfortunately, there are more than a few people in this country who are attracted by authoritarianism as long as it is agreeable with their particular flavor of politics. I personally think Arpaio is a thug and a national embarassment. I cannot believe that anyone would seriously consider him Senate material.

All he needs to do punish those that have been 'convicted', not every single person brought in to the sheriff station.

Dangerous ? Dangerous ? You see law abiding people as dangerous ? I thank god for our sheriff and police every day .... are they perfect ..hell no ! but maybe you should take a drive down to Mexico to appreciate our law enforcement . And try to imagine a Day in the Phoenix without law enforcement .

Here is the deal very simple ... Joe enforces immigration law .... and the left wing hates him for it . That includes the DHS director ...the Attorney General of the US ... The President of the US and every other Latino voter hopeful.

Well that's still not exactly what I said. But anyway...

Let's see if I can make this real simple.
I believe it is dangerous to entrust those in a position to enforce laws with unlimited and unchecked power. You know what they say about absolute power and corruption. (Before you go there, I have family in law enforcement, and am not painting with a broad brush. But "bad eggs" exist.) Now if you assume that living a lawful life guarantees we never have an encounter with law enforcement, then you are indeed naive. To do so is to deny the existence of mistaken identities, bitter ex's or psychotic neighbors or anyone who can accuse you falsely of a crime, including cops who are having a bad day or are are otherwise, yes, crooked. It happens. And when it happens to you, your logic gets flushed.

The man is a fascist who's actions make a mockery of our judicial system. I realize that you obviously hate the people he targets so you don't mind, but what if somebody targeted you that way?

The whole point about preserving civil liberties is that if you don't work to preserve them for some people, you are essentially saying that when the time comes, you don't mind forfeiting your own.

Always this "left wing this" "open border that' - you need to stop listening to extreme right wing media and join us here in reality. The national council of La Raza is a community organization that works to end discrimination and poverty against and in the Latino American community. It is not in favor of opening up the border. Period. But to say that because La Raza is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of Latino Americans means that they want to swing open the gates, that's just a little bit more racism. But go ahead, we know all "community organizers" are really closet hitlers. Just like that Gandhi or Jesus or Paul Revere.
