Massive Upset In Daytona 500; Trevor Bayne Wins

Mon Feb 21, 2011 3:50 am

For those of you that are even passively interested in NASCAR...ever heard of Trevor Bayne?

http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/stor...ne-wins-NASCARs-Daytona-500-022011

20-year old Trevor Bayne wins NASCAR's Super Bowl and his first race in only his second Sprint Cup (NASCAR's top level) start. Adding to the intrigue is that he's driving for a team that hadn't won a race in 10 years and had been running partial schedules in recent years due to funding issues.

He's also the youngest Daytona 500 winner and the second-youngest race winner in the sport's history at 20 years and one day. This has to be the biggest stunner/upset I've seen as a fan. Equate it to a rookie PGA golfer winning The Masters.

Anybody else watch the race? What did you think?

More like a story book ending.
In all fairness, he got there with a good car, a good team, good driving, and was able to be far enough up front to miss all the mayhem of a 20 yellow flag event.
As a race fan it was a very boring event with all the yellow flags, the event was 4+ hours long a little over the top for attention span. Sort of reminded me of some old USAC dirt track races with high car counts that would take 3 hours to get in 25 green flag laps because they would not count the yellow flag laps.

Please. If you think that race was boring, what do you think about an F1 race? Heck, at least in NASCAR the cars are capable of passing each other all the time. Couple that with the fact that spending tons of money doesn't automatically win you a race like F1 does, and well, I can see why its so popular here in the US.

All in all, I felt it was a good race. I was amazed to see 2 blimps flying over the race today. Never seen that one before.

F1 racing is about the have and have nots pretty simple.
Yes, I think a 200 lap race with 20 yellow flags and 100 laps (2+hours) of watching a track blowers circle the track at 25 mph is pretty boring. Maybe those blowers get you excited but not me.

Race was ok... different seeing them in pairs all the time instead of the packs in the past, still think front bumper is to strong... way too much bump-drafting... hence way to many yellows considering it is a super speed oval, agree 4hrs, plus is pushing it...

Well Phoenix is next  so lets see how that will work out.

Congrats to Trevor, fantastic job all day and he was able to close the deal at the end

Cheerios,

I flew down and back for the race for race yesterday (insert shameless plug about my up-coming trip report here    ) and had a blast. I thought the race was awesome. I'm glad that my first Daytona 500 was this one.

With 70-some lead changes? Yeah all the yellows sucked, especially because it was often for Michael Waltrip putting on his stupid hat.

Good race although it might be time for a rules change. If you are going to team up with another driver to draft the entire race you should have to declare that you are doing so. If your partner suffers a race ending malfunction or crashes, you are on your own the rest of the race. That way those that don't have a steady dance partner from the outset have a chance. Or, failing that, the cars should have to be entered in pairs.

As to Trevor Bayne, what more of a storybook ending could you possibly ask for? The commentators said he said he only has to shave once a week!!! Think about the fact that after the track hoopla wound down, he is not even old enough to enjoy a beer at the end of the day!!! He is only 2 years removed from High School and yet is participating in probably one of the most technical sports in the world driving a multi-million dollar race car at speeds over 200mph, yet he would be unable to walk into the airport car rental office and rent a car!!!
Warm winds blowing, heating blue skies, a road that goes forever, I'm going to Texas!

I gave up on NASCAR about 20 years ago when they took the Stock out of Stock Car...!! Are they still required to template the cars...??

Also, why did they move the race back to a day race..? The last few years it ended under lights.

You want to know why the kid won the race. All you had to do was look at the car in victory lane to see that is was absolutely pristine. Not a scratch or mark on the paint and no dents in the bodywork. What does that say? It says the kid used his brain, kept out of trouble, raced clean, and won the race with lots of smarts.

Well done Trevor. Keep it up and he's got a great future.

I think Nascar did that in an attempt to win back their core audience. Last year it was so late just because of the pavement issue. I like it better that way. I hate waiting until 3:00 or 4:00 to watch a race.

Kid's got a future - hopefully beter than Derrike Cope's was...

Shout out to Regan Smith and the Denver, CO based Furniture Row Racing team, had a good thing going before being center-punched by the 22 - still finished 7th in the all black car, looked good.
