I would amend these statements to say that the students in question should
be adults. I understand why this story has become news. I teach at the university level and many of my students act as if they were children in adult bodies. Many of my students talk to their parents on the phone at least
once a day. I have to be careful what I say in class for fear of offending students who do not hesitate to call Mommy at the slightest perceived offense. The parents immediately call the university president to complain, the president kicks it down to the dean, and then the dean has to have an obligatory talk with a tenured faculty member simply to appease the over-protective parents who mollycoddle their delicate little flower of an offspring. I hate to sound cynical, but this is the current state of affairs, like it or not. Professors with 30 years service end up cowering in fear that a 20 year-old child in an adult's body will go crying to Mommy. This is a fact of the modern institution of "higher learning."
