BBC Poll: Most Popular Nations

Mon Mar 07, 2011 10:30 pm

"The BBC World Service Country Rating Poll has been tracking opinions about country
influence in the world since 2005. The latest results are based on 28,619 in-home or
telephone interviews conducted across a total of 27 countries by the international polling firm
GlobeScan, together with the Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) at the
University of Maryland. GlobeScan coordinated fieldwork between December 2, 2010 and
February 4, 2011."

Here are this year's results

Country % (of people who think this nation has a positive influence on the world)

Germany 62%
United Kingdom 58%
Canada 57%
EU 57%
Japan 57%
France 52%
Brazil 49%
USA 49%
China 44%
South Africa 42%
India 42%
South Korea 36%
Russia 34%
Israel 21%
Pakistan 17%
North Korea 16%
Iran 16%

The detailed results can be found here(PDF).

I wonder who the 16% thinking North Korea is a positive influence could be....Can't all be PRC citizens, unless the number of polled people per sampled country is unequal.

I was reading an article on this in the Canadian media. It seems we've taken a hit because of things like non-adherence to Kyoto, oilsands development, and seal hunting (two out of three of those I'll defend, but that's for another thread). Interestingly, though, it also said it's because of decreased aid to Africa from Canada. I found this odd because, while I can see why others would be unimpressed by it, I don't think it's been an issue on the domestic scene at all - at least I have not heard of this issue.

It's interesting how the things that make a country popular or unpopular on a global level may not be the things that are talked about within that country. I'm sure that not many people in those bottom three countries would be too concerned about the results of this poll.

Of course, to be a bit cynical, all of this is really moot because most people in the world are not very well-informed about international issues.

Still, congrats to the germans on going from - well, you know - to the most popular country on earth in just 65 years. I think you are seen worldwide as a peaceful country, both technologically advance and environmentally responsible. In Canada we only have 2/3 of those going for us right now, perception wise.

Just my 2 cents.

I would not put a lot of faith in a poll!

The only way you could get 16% of those interviewed to say North Korea has a positive influence on the world, is if you only interviewed six (6) people and one (1) of them was Kim Jong-il.

That might be the case from a Western point of view, but if you look at where NK got a result >16% you see Chile, Peru, Turkey, Russia, Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, Indonesia, China and the Philippines - none of them is part of what we usually consider the "West". And while it's a minority opinion everywhere except Ghana, I wouldn't rule it out that there is a part of the population that considers it a positive thing that there's someone who "stands up" against Western foreign policy.

Chile is most definitely in the West.

I fail to see how oppressing his people and threatening to launch a nuclear war makes Kim Jong-ILL (!) an opponent of the western foreign policy. He's just a psycho at the head of a starving country, nothing more.

But the title and the question are not identical. The question was NOT about what nation is popular but about what nation has a positive influence on the world. And these are different aspects.

I can't see where this poll is providing anything in the way of useful information.

It occurs to me that the raw data has dubious credibility - how can the data collected represent anything more than a crude popularity contest of nations among people in places around the world?

I have to confess that even a highly educated, widely travelled, and well read (note the use of the Oxford comma) person such as myself, has no idea about how much positive influence, say, the nation of Brazil has on the world.

What I (and probably most other people) think of most other nations is not really scientifically formulated but based on personal prejudices and narrow personal experience.

I would also argue the Phillipines as being in the West

Is the EU a country? Not the last time I checked. Although I'm not a statistician, I think this muddies the water.
