Your Opinions On Stem Sell Research

Fri Mar 11, 2011 1:34 am

So, I'm doing this project for my Biology class and I'm supposed to survey people if they support or does not support stem cell research and instead of going out in the cold or at the mall asking random people with the risk of being mugged, I decided to ask you guys  Wink You don't have to be very detailed, all I need is statistics, but feel free to add your own comments and opinions!

You could either say "YES" or "NO" or "It Depends" BUT with a valid reason.

Thanks in Advance, I appreciate it.

Yes. I'm all for it. You can harvest placental mesenchymal stem cells as they are derived from the placenta, which is discarded after birth anyway.

Since I'm on a list for a stem cell marrow transplant -- I'm all for it, with no reservations.

I wish the best for you. I am all for stem cell research. If the end result helps ends desease, or cures the sick, how can one not support the research. I vote yes for stem cell research.

FOR IT!! I'm a type 1 Diabetic and I've been a long time sufferer with this abomination-unto-mankind of a disease!

20 million people would probably feel the same way, too, and that's just diabetics. What about people with Alzheimers, MS, or cancer, or spinal cord injuries, etc?

I don't get why all the controversy with it. This has a high chance of saving lives...

I am for stem cell research, the embryonic stem cell research is where I try to stay away from. I don't know how I feel about it.

I'm all for it for several reasons. One is that it has the potential to be incredibly beneficial. Another is that because of that potential, it will get done one way or another, but doing it here means that it will be US companies who get the patents and the (substantial) income derived from them, rather than having the money go to German, Japanese or Chinese companies.

I wish you all the best Arrow!

I'm all for it. I have friends that are doing research in this field and it looks very promising for the (near) future. Also I've read that there is progress being made turning ordinary cells into stem cells for further use, this should minimize the need for fetal stem cells and hopefully silence the opposition.

So, are we talking about stem cells from things like placentas, umbilical chords, or discarded human embryos ? Personally I don't object to any, but the controversy is really about embryos.

For it.

In the case of stem cells originating from a human embryo, if the family agrees to it, then I can't see where there would be anything to debate. It's just like consenting to giving organs from a recently deceased relative. It saves lives and gives a little meaning to the loss.

But then I'm not familiar with the details of the controversy. It seems to me as being all down to misplaced ethics which rarely concern the ones who complain in the first place, as usual...

I lost both my father and grandmother to Alzheimers, a disease that stands a real chance of being helped with stem cell research. So yes, I am behind it 100000%

And sure, call me a jerk, but I don't give a darn if it's embryonic or not - just get some cures for all these nasty diseases. I don't get the idea of protecting a life (if you believe in embryos as life forms) if it means costing another (in the form of someone with a disease)

Precisely. Add me to the yes list.

I've yet to hear one competent (non-emotional, non-"I'm uncomfortable with it") argument against stem cell research of any kind, including embryonic.

Stem cell research should be allowed and funded. I'm surprised this is even an issue today. People protesting against such research may feel differently when one of their loved ones is struck with a horrible disease.

If a family explicitly wants to do it, then there should be no reason to ban it.

I am favourable to stem cell research.

They still have found no cure for Raynaud disorder. I hope they will be able to cure it. Stem cell research might help.
This thing is a real bummer even if just a mild case.

The symptoms include several cyclic color changes:

1. When exposed to cold temperatures, the blood supply to the fingers or toes, and in some cases the nose or earlobes, is markedly reduced; the skin turns pale or white (called pallor), and becomes cold and numb.
2. When the oxygen supply is depleted, the skin colour turns blue (called cyanosis). If the color progresses to purple, resembling a bruise that doesn't go away (or spreads in size) and is accompanied by excruciating pain, contact your doctor immediately.
3. These events are episodic, and when the episode subsides or the area is warmed, the blood flow returns and the skin colour first turns red (rubor), and then back to normal, often accompanied by swelling, tingling, and a painful "pins and needles" sensation.

Yeah, the great thing about stem cell research is that at least it's an opportunity to cure these nasty diseases. In some cases it might work, in others in might not...but at least it's an attempt. That is so critically important to those suffering from these diseases, as well as their families. I just cannot imagine people being so against it, even embryonic.

Who could be against the basic premise?

As for the embryonic thing, it is interesting that after all the hype, crying and screaming about the need to use dead babies, most of the big gains have come from adult stem cells.

And it really infuriates me that there are many groups out there, particularly religious ones, that are strongly against it. But some people rather live under a rock and pretend it's still the stone age

No they aren't. They are against the use of embryonic stem cells. Over the last years, from what I have read, most of the innovation has coming from adult stem cells anyway.

Yet it's embryonic cells that are the most promising as they can, usually, grow into almost any other type of tissue. Adult stem cells aren't nearly as versatile and present different problems.

And since it's embryonic cells that are the target of so much (IMO needless) controversy, I'm assuming those are the type OP is interested in.

At any rate, I don't have any problems with any type of stem cell research.

Probably because until recently that was all they could get public funding for. NSF and other public grants are a huge source of research funding and if a lab can get them using adult, there is a good chance they might be swayed to go that route. If embryonic had the same level of funding for the same amount of time as adult I think we would have seen many more advances. Thankfully that is beginning to change and public funds are starting to go towards embryonic.

If the above doesn't make my position obvious, absolutely, 100000000000% yes fund the hell out of it.

Yes, I am in favour of stem cell research, including embryonic stem cells. Research that has the potential to alleviate and/ or cure so much illness and suffering should be encouraged.
