USGS has revised their report to 7.9. Japanese news is reporting 7.8.

Numerous reports that tsunami of 6-8 meters' height has struck various parts of the NE coastline of Honshu. Bridges, coastal roads, and possibly seaside structures of various sizes have been wiped out.

NHK feed to CNN International is reporting that major airports in Tokyo and all over northern Japan have been closed, as have the bullet-trains and all major public transit systems. This is truly horrific. Prayers to the Japanese people.

Already seen photos of people having to walk on elevated train platforms in Tokyo to be evacuated.

This area off the NE coast of Honshu is highly seismically active. In the five years I lived in Japan there were at least three significant earthquakes (6.5+) in this area I can remember offhand. Just in the last week there have been four temblors over magnitude 6 in this same region, including a 7.3 earlier this week. Fortunately this is one of the most sparsely populated parts of Honshu.

Paths around my house is partially liquefacted and stopped. Some electric polls are inclined by 30 degree. This is far from the epicenter by 400-500 km from the epicenter. Hundred of thousand workers in the Center of Tokyo metropilitan are stopped and can not go home because all trains are stopped. (Going home difficulties) A petrolem Tank and Steel rifinery is burning. Is not someone you know of in Tokyo?

Updated information on the initial quake and aftershocks from the USGS does not look good. LOTS and LOTS of 6.0 and greater aftershocks.

Watching it on TV now. Sky News are reporting one confirmed death in Tokyo but from the images I am seeing of the waves hitting a rural area including lots of farm buidings, I can't see how anyone in the path of those waves would have a chance. This is massive, obviously.

Somewhat 'luckily' for those in Hawaii, they have about 5 hours before anything is likely to hit.

It will be interesting but sad to see how this pans out.

Sirens went off here in Honolulu at 22:00 - tsunami wave heights of up to 6-7 feet have been deemed possible locally. This is not good for low-lying coastal portions of Oahu. Traffic jams already forming in Ewa Beach as people are trying to get gas and food.

The lastest warning:

EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
0259 AM HST FRI 11 MAR 2011

OMG... I have been watching the news since it started. This is sadly going to be a huge death toll. I am so sorry for all of you in Japan, and I wish there was a way to stop all of this from happening. Stay safe guys and gals, and please, stay on high ground until this is over. We are getting tsunami watches now here in Washington State. We are close to water, so I am starting to get nervous.

Kaohsiung is on the opposite side of the island to where the tsunami will hit first but it's hard to know any more as the tsunami could still affect that area.

My thoughts go out to all people in Japan and around the globe being affected of this earthquake.

I just read a short report from a colleague of mine who is in Tokyo. He said all took over an hour with the worst earthquake and the aftershocks. He said very scary and freightening. He is in a hotel with many many stories... Weird feeling he wrote.

My sympathy to all the people in Japan who have been affected by this tragedy.

Some parts of Japan were not hit at all.
My people in Matsue and Oki Island on the Western coastal areas of Japan toward Korea did not feel anything at all.

Aftershocks in the area where the big shock took place are still at 5 points + high. This alone is really high.

Tsunami waves are expected all through the Pacific. They are monitoring all the tsunami arrival times.

This is a real tragedy. Lots of places and people will have to deal with immense damage, food shortages, so many problems to come for months even years maybe.

Nature is so unpredictable.

There has been a live stream on Aljazeera since the first quake happened showing some terrifying images.

Tsunami is truely terrifying. The sight of the refinery in Ichihara is scary as well. I stayed down at Tokyo bay last summer and that fire would be easy to see. I know it's a trite phrase that's often used, but if there's anything I can do as a person to help please tell me.

Finally made it home and found no damage to our Japanese house. Since my house is above ground, we have a view of Tokyo some 45 km away and we can see a huge fireball from a distant coming from the Cosmo oil refinery. Still all land and cell lines are too busy so I cannot make any calls to my family in the states. As well for my wife, she cannot contact her family since they are living in Sendai, nearby the disaster.

Please keep the updates coming along, our Internet, phones, TV satellite are down at this time. Many Ships from the Japanese Navy are underway. Anxiously waiting for the phones to come back online so we can start making some calls. Hope the rest of you guys are okay.

Keep trying, insist. You should be able to get through international phone lines. Maybe land line will be easier than mobiles.

I had to wait a while to get through to Japan earlier this morning my time and finally got through to my people in Matsue and Oki Island via land line after trying many times.

Still some powerful aftershocks. One of 6.0 again recorded off the coast of Honshu.

So, I've been watching Sky News and France24 for three hours. News on the French channel come several minutes after Sky News, it's like they're watching it and then report it. They go to the same places, talk of the same things, and especially, don't talk about things that would be of interest for French people : will there be a Tsunami in New Caledonia and French Polynesia ?

If you have information about this, share please.

And to all those affected, my deepest sympathies.

Look at the map. French Polynesia is much much further South from the Hawaiian Islands and New Caledonia is off the Australian coast (Brisbane). If the tsunami wave hits it will still be much smaller.

Tsunami waves travel fast. It's amazing how fast these waves travel. They are talking about 700 Kms/hour.

 Wow!

News update just received from Queen Mary 2
Queen Mary 2 is currently on passage between Osaka & Nagasaki & is circa 450 miles south west of the epi centre of this morning's earthquake.Weather in the area is calm & it is extremely unlikely that the sea area & route the ship is on will be affected by any after effects of the earthquake. The Commodore has made a broadcast to the Guests advising them of the situation,he has walked the decks & all is calm on board.

Well, apparently in the 60's a Chilean quake caused a tsunami that killed 140 people in Japan, so those things are dangerous across the ocean.
