Best Brands Of PC Power Supplies?

Sat Mar 19, 2011 2:13 am

I was wondering, does anyone here seem to have opinions are what are the best brands of PC power supplies? I recently bought a new Thermaltake Litepower 450W 80 Plus Bronze PSU, replacing an Apex/Allied 400W PSU that died on me.

It seems that the brands that tend to get good reviews are generally Antec, Cooler Master, Corsair, Enermax, OCZ, PC Power & Cooling, SeaSonic, and Thermaltake. Does anyone here have a favorite?

I've always sworn by Antec and Thermaltake, never had a bad one out of the box, and fewer failures than others. I've never used OCZ, Corsair or SeaSonic ones, they just aren't stocked where i buy parts.

Enermax , Cooler Master and PCP&C are ok too, though I haven't used either except for a very few that came in cases I ordered for people. Had one bad PCP&P out of the box years ago, but they replaced it and the damaged motherboard and payed all the shipping costs to return it, great customer care, ditto for Antec which are the brand i've used most. Haven't dealt with the other's for RMA yet.
Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Of course, pretty much any PSU included with a case will be inferior to a standalone unit, even with reputable brands.

All of my computers are powered by Antec. I have a VOD Server holding 21 drives, multiple fans, etc powered by a 650 watt Antec. I've never had a problem out of any of them.

Honestly, my Rosewill power supply has served flawlessly for four years. It's a great PSU. I also have other Rosewill branded products and never have trouble with that brand.

This is the specific unit I use:

The list is quite good, I have no real favorite, it's more about what I need and what is offered. For example my next PSU should have at least 1050W, and 80+ gold. That's a small list.

Currently I have an Antec Earthwatt 430W on my parents' computer, basic but good quality, a Seasonic S12 500W (imported from Germany when the brand was still unknown) on my second computer/server, and a CoolerMaster Real Power Pro M 850W on my main computer. All are a few years old, that's the problem with good PSUs, they don't die so you're not compelled to change !

Antec cases and power supplies here too. Been using them for years and have had no failures.

I recently had my OCZ PSU fail on me after literally 5 years of continuous use. I never shut my computer down, so I think it did fairly well. To replace it I bought a Corsair 750W professional, and it's been doing good.

I just bought a Corsair 750 watt PSU it looks nice but I'm still waiting for the other parts of the PC to arrive to test it!

From the reviews I read it seems very promising and reliable.

Looks pretty cool, although I would prefer a unit with Active PFC (which lack the little red voltage switch).

Easy enough, all of the following have Active PFC:

RX950/850/750 D-B: (950W, 850W, and 750W) $79.99 for 750W. Lowest price around the net (not in stock on NewEgg)

RX950/850/750 S-B: (950W, 850W, and 750W) $89.99 for 750W on Newegg.

Lightning-1000 and Lightning 800 (1000W and 800W): $169.99 for 800W on Newegg.

RBR 1000 and RBR 750 (1000W and 750W) (Modular) $129.99 for 750W on Newegg.

Corsair by far. Very very well built. A tad more expensive than other brands but oh so worth it.

That's mine! Had it for almost 2 years in an overclocked i7 rig with two overclocked vid cards and 3 HDDs. I stress test my rig often and it always performs flawlessly. It gives plenty of oomph.

My only complaint is that cable management can be a bitch with that model.

I don't hear too many complaints from Antec, Thermaltake or rosewill either.
