Porsche 918 Hybrid - Priced From $845,000

Mon Mar 21, 2011 9:01 pm

Wow..looks like an awesome car..powered by a 4 liter V8 producing 500hp, plus two electric motors with 218 hp..and fuel consumption figures of 3L/100km (78 mpg). If I had the money I'd buy this over the Bugatti Veyron any day!

What is the fuel economy at 250km/h or 300km/h?

Not 3L/100km I'd guess.

I do like Porsche, but I suspect this thing will be a bit soft - much like the Carrera GT was, great engine and brakes, but hurt by soft suspension and spongy responses in the handling.

I'll bet the conventional McLaren MP4/12C will beat it everywhere - at a much cheaper price.   I hope for Porsche's sake that isn't true. I want them to make the 918 a serious weapon for the race-track, that just happens to be road-legal too.

Caradvice also has some more on the new 918:

http://www.caradvice.com.au/111452/2013-porsche-918-spyder-on-sale/

It will do 25km on the electric power alone. And is charged by a 230V power outlet (like found in many non-USA homes) in three hours.

Probably not

But the whole point of this car is to advertise the advancement in technology. I highly doubt people who can afford to buy this actually worry about fuel consumption..and not like many of them will be driving this on an everyday basis. It'll end up parked in the garage. This is a collectors car..collectors are going to pick up every one of these and hold them.

I don't particularly like the Veyron (far too heavy) but it goes to 400Km/h, this one doesn't, so there is no real comparison. It will be heavy too so I won't like it either.

25Km on electricity means that the V8 will never be used, as that kind of car doesn't make more than a few Km a year. Now, of course, you'll still have to change the batteries regularly, as they age no matter what.

All in all, a bad idea, and nothing green about it. I don't like the Cayenne either, or worse the Cayenne diesel, but at least that makes some sense. An uncle of mine went from a Cayenne Turbo S to the Touareg V10 TDi (when there was no Cayenne diesel) just because he didn't like going to the gas station too often.

I have a feeling that in the city, it'll run on the batteries, but if you really call up maximum power - it'll augment the electric motors with the V8, sort of the reverse of the very fast 911 GT3R Hybrid.

I think this 918 is also quite heavy isn't it? Somewhere near 1500kg if I remember right - which makes me wonder, if it didn't have the electric motors to belt it along, it might struggle to be any faster than a 911 Carrera 4S PDK.

Porsche is testing electric powered Boxsters in Germany and is rumored to be testing hybrid 911 models here in the USA.

That sounds amazing. Too bad it is so expensive.

That's pretty good, and most homes in the US with electric ovens will have at least one 220V outlet. Its not that hard to convert an outlet.

1500 kg isn't particularly heavy.

Mr. Harlot wants one. Good luck to him.

We were told that Porsche is also looking at a hybrid engine for the Panamera.

All that money for a car? Give me a break.

I'd use that money to acquire a Mooney Acclaim:

And for the days when I had a real need for speed and even a Mooney was too slow, this would be in the stable as well:

Don't tell me that wouldn't be infinitely more awesome than any tricked-out Porsche.

It's 3 times heavier than Caparo's supercar (420kg - 575hp):

http://www.caradvice.com.au/112511/v...caparo-t1-driven-by-mika-hakkinen/

That's got to be about the most violent performance of all - it achieves around 12,000 to 13,000rpm at maximum, and the speed is pretty savage too. Wish Porsche would do something really serious like that for once.
