Firefox 4, Experiences?

Fri Mar 25, 2011 6:51 pm

Well I downloaded it yesterday and all seemed fine until I realized this happened:

Help! Corrupted Fonts In Win7 (by Fly2HMO Mar 25 2011 in Non Aviation)

After I was inches from nuking my hard drive I finally fixed that, all the while FF would struggle to run over 5 minutes without freezing on me.

But as I predicted for such a major new release, it's full of bugs. I reinstalled FF 3.6.16 as I never had problems with it.

FF4 looked promising and when it worked it worked great. I'm really disappointed as I use FF 99% of the time and have been very loyal to Mozilla for years. Never had this much trouble with FF before. Looks like they really rushed it. There's tons of new threads in other forums out there with many complaints.

So, did you get it? And how has it behaved so far?

Works fine on my mac. A few web pages have issues loading, but I suspect that's because a few plugins aren't yet completely compatible with it.

Have it for my Mac. Works fine. Nothing spectacular so far, but no complaints.

I've got it on my Windows 7 notebook. It works great. A lot of flash player problems I had with the previous version are solved and the layout is a lot more efficient.

I just installed it on my Macbook pro -- no problems, but I haven't noticed any particular improvements. It still beats Safari.

FF 4 beta 12 came with openSUSE 11.4 which I installed on the mac pro about a week ago. I guess it's OK, no crashes or anything so far. I don't do much of my "random" browsing on that machine, though, so it's not seeing crappy sites full of the sound and the fury. I don't ask much of a browser, just that it render pages and otherwise not annoy me.

I have been using it since beta and love it. Final release has been completely stable for me up to now

I downloaded the final release yesterday and love it. It's definitely faster than 3.6 was and I was all to keep using all my add-ons save one (I had to load a different mouse gestures add-on). The only thing I'm not crazy about is the location of the bookmarks tab all the way on the far right. I don't like it being on the edge of the screen like that.

I'm running it under Win7 and haven't seen any of the problems the OP mentioned. The UI is a little nicer and got better once I discovered I could move the Home button back to where it belonged.

I haven't noticed any increase in speed. Previous versions of Firefox never seemed slow to me.

I've had a few little issues, but most is all better now that I figured out how to get my tabs back in the proper position.

One thing I noticed on the Ubuntu version, when I click on Open Next 25 Posts on A.net, it pops back up to the previous 25 posts. The Ubuntu version has always been the red-headed stepchild though. Also, i can't get FF4 to self install on Ubuntu, so I'm still using what they call Minefield, I think. they can't seem to keep the names consistent. Windows is all good.

Running Firefox 4 on a Mac, and it feels great. Speed is noticeable when you first start the browser up, and I like the app tab feature as I keep Gmail open all the time and it's great.

Overall recommendation - get it!

Works fine here! Seems more stable then the previous versions. As Vandenheuvel mentioned I haven't encountered issues with Flash so far.

The only issue I had with it was early on when I couldn't figure out what happened to the add-on bar at the bottom of the browser. I use the Echofon extension and the status icon for it, as well as the popup window that appears for new tweets was not appearing until I read that the add-on bar was an option that was now user-controlled. Once I got that sorted, I was good.

I like it, as on a number of sites, the fonts are clearer looking and have less jaggies. It makes sites look cleaner. I'm still having to get used to the tabs being on the top of the browser and the bookmarks link being to the right side.

I have it running on one of my machines, a Vista example, and so far it's run perfectly. Fast and stable. No complaints there.

However the new look/format is considerably different, so I'll have to try to tweak that.

I thought I'd hate it but It's actually pretty neat. I can't say it's better than 3.6 but it's definitely a step in the right direction. I love the sync capability (I use firefox on Ubuntu, and I have the Firefox Home app on my iPod as well, so they're all synced to each other).

You can drop the tabs down below the URL bar. Go to Firefox - Options - Tabs on Top/Bottom. Makes it much more like the older 3.6.

Loaded it yesterday and no issues. I really like it.

Does anyone know of a tab or quick link on FF4 for Thunderbird mail..? Otherwise I need to keep my mail running in the background, or minimize my page and open TB to check my e-mail.

Or right click on the menu bar.

I've run across a couple of more glitches, sometimes on a.net the back button takes me two pages back. Interesting, the only problems I have are on a.net. Still not sure if I have the official release for Ubuntu.

Downloaded it, tried it, hate it.

Back to Safari I think.

I only like to use Apple things though, so my review is very biased. But FireFox was very laggy, and it just had a strange feel to it.. *shudder*..

Been running FF4 a couple of days now on a Vista laptop, without any major issues. To me, it looks and feels a bit like Chrome, which I've tried, and use occasionally, but never warmed up to. I had tried FF 3.6-whatever, but it was so slow and buggy that I swapped back to 3.5-something-or-other. I haven't noticed a big increase in speed, but other than my brief venture into V3.6, I never had much of a problem with speed in FF. I don't have many add-ons installed, but most are working fine in V4.

On a few sites (A.net included) I needed to visit and log in a couple of times before it remembered my log in info, and I'm not getting the red "unread" icons on the A.net forums most of the time. I'll probably need to play with some of the menu options get it all configured to my liking, and eventually I'll remember that the right-click menu has swapped the "Open in new tab" and "Open in new window" options.

I used to use Firefox almost exclusively, but after it became really sluggish and full of bugs, I made the switch to Chrome and haven't looked back.

Funnily enough, now Chrome keeps suffering from Flash Player crashes where it never used to before. Very annoying.

When I tried to start Firefox yesterday, it crashed. Still not been able to get Firefox 4.0 working so I'm back to IE9. On Tuesady I'll try my 3rd virusscanner to see if ther're a virus blocking FF (the two I'm using now didn't show anything. Though it was strange that Windows 7 also crashed yesterday...

Well I'm back on FF4 now. Fixed the problem, works fine for the most part, but it freezes occasionally, apparently due to older plugins. Otherwise it seems fine. Didn't really notice any difference in speed really. Then again my PC is f'ing fast as it is and I'm on Verizon FiOS on top of that

The problem is clearly not a virus then. A typical virus would tend to mess with your whole OS and not just selectively block a few programs.

installed it...seems to be a bit less of a memory problem over longer browsing sessions than ver. 3 was.

The only problem so far is the track pad driver didn't work with FF4 and i couldn't scroll by sliding my finger. I had to download the alternate driver to scroll using a touch pad.

Whatever the problem, it magically disappeared as Firefox 4.0 seems to work again (after two days of trying)....

BTW it looks like it's better than the previous version (faster) hopefully no more crashes as I do prefer Firefox over IE (though I need to use IE for a few websites as they can't handle Firefox).

Firefox 4.0 works great except for one big problem: it breaks a lot of the third party add-on extensions that used to work with previous versions of Firefox.

Hopefully, these issues will be addressed with extension updates over the next month or so.

In the upper left hand corner is the "back" button, but not the downward arrow that you click on to go farther backwards to whatever webpage you recently visited. Is there a way with FF4 to get that feature back?

I'd hate to keep clicking on the back arrow a bunch of times.

Many thanks,

You can either right click on the Back button, or left click and hold. Either way will bring up a list of previous pages viewed in that tab, and you can select the one you want to navigate to. If you have navigated back several pages, the "Forward" button next to the Back button has the same functionality.

I was getting update reminders from Firefox 3 and every time I did update, FF3 would not work and I had to reload the old copy.

So I tried a straight FF 4 download, no probs and no more update reminders.

Seems a bit faster, but a.net is not very fast responding. Other sites are noticeably faster.
