Aviation In Nightclubs Or Bars?

Fri Apr 01, 2011 1:08 am

Last Saturday I went to Ducati's launch party for their Diavel motorcycle in Asia, which was at Shanghai's M1NT. Those of you familiar with the venue (the one with the 17 meter reef shark tank) know that there is a big wall just behind the bar and usually they project the parties coming up, special events, or guest DJs. However, last Saturday night, I noticed they were projecting Delta's safety video in a sort of remix mode.

Any other times when you encountered aviation at a nightclub or bar?

Cheers

All the time. Find a gray haired man with a tan in the middle of winter talking the loudest to three uncomfortable looking young women and chances are pretty good he's a pilot.

Never been but heard it's a pretty cool place.

The club "DC10" in Ibiza springs to mind. The club is actually located in an old aircraft hangar near the airport and people cheer when planes fly low overhead.

The Bora Bora beach club in Ibiza offers a similar experience too.

Definitely an interesting experience for those who have an interest in electronic music, partying and aviation! The added sound of jet engines makes for really nice remixes. :P

There is the Runway 34 bar (adjacent to 34) near ZRH which has a IL-14 as centrepiece. It's a short walk from the Unterried tram stop (trams 10/12 from ZRH)

http://www.runway34.ch/

There's also the Wings bar in Niederdorf (the old town in Zürich) started in 2001 by a group of SR crew. Some of the furniture is old C-class seats, presumably from ex-SR aircraft.

There used to be a cool bar in San Francisco called the Orbit Room. We had a mini A.net meet there for New Years 2006.
The bartender there had a collection of vintage airline bags and advertisments from the 1960s and cocktails with aviation theme names.
The Orbit Room is still there in name but it's no longer aviation themed. It now a gay bar.
Anothere bar is the Detox lounger. In their basement, they have business class seats and a window seaction from a DC-10.

Here in Bangkok, there is a Go-Go bar called the DC-10.

Try 'High Flyers' Pub at the Birchwood Hotel, not far from Johannesburg Airport. It has an actual SAA B747-200 cockpit section in it, airline memorabilia everywhere and a terrace where you can watch aircraft on approach.

Over at FRG there is a place called the 56th Fighter Group. Good restaurant, but at night on the weekends there is a night club attached to it. Big bar, dance floor and deck on the back with an outdoor bar. Don't know if it still has the club part operating outide of catered parties, but it used to be really cool and would get PACKED!

There's a similar type restaurant in Atlanta at PDK called the 57th Fighter Group.

It had closed down for a time a couple of years ago and reopened in 2009.

Not sure if it's the same registration but the Grumman seaplane operated by Chalk's Ocean Airways that crashed near Miami in 2005 was also featured in the Wham! video 'Careless Whispers'.

The Aviator bar at Port Elizabeth Airport has an aviation theme.

It even has an Impala Mk1 on the roof outside.

It's called Hi Flyerz. It is 1,100 metres from the piano keys on 03R and 300 metres off the centreline. Here is the 742 cockpit built into the deck

Zkpilot, you beat me to it.

Was about to mention Narita, Japan and the two bars there. The Jet Lag bar that you mention but also my favourite, which is "Flyers". Spent lots of yen and brain cells in that place.

Also another favourite of mine is "F Street Station" in Anchorage, Alaska.

Yeah NRT is great quite a lot of placers catering to crew as you know. Spiral Staircase is my fave for dinner, a few drinks at jetlag or bargin then on to the dirty old Cage

Used to be a bar on Houston in NYC called Idlewild. Its interior was similar to that seen in Flylounge above.
Also had airline bathrooms.
