Aviation Songs

Sat Apr 02, 2011 4:27 am

I heard of this track some time ago, I love it, Could'nt help it reminding me of avaition for some reason, maybe the Trident in this case...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87JPhX-5_Mg

I was just wondering if anyone else knew of any music that makes think of aviation. In this case it's a classic70s but anything goes.

LA International Airport. Classic country song from the 1970s. I can't remember who sang it. Some woman with really big hair. There was also another country song from 2000s filmed in either Little Rock or Knoxville. It goes something like "There's a plane flying out of here tonight/with an empty first class seat..." I don't have time at the moment to Google it, but I love that video.

I love "Intro" by Markus Schulz on his Coldharbour Sessions 2004 Disc 1. Basically it is just the intro to "Numb" with background sounds of an airport terminal. At the end, you can hear ATC give instructions to a pilot to exit runway taking the high speed taxiway and contact ground control on XXX.65. Very cool!

Cheers

Couple Russian old ones (1940's) ones here for you:
Все Выше (Higher!) thats my personal favourite, its played at the Victory Day parade when the aircraft start coming overhead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJ_o3UUwqAE&feature=related

Мы, друзья, перелетные птицы (We, my friends are migrating birds) or Первым делом самолеты (Airplanes come first (before the girls))

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6DlebXwRL8

Огромное Небо (Huge sky) 1960s - commemorates IL-28 pilots Capt.Boris Kapustin and Sr.Lt Yuri Yanov who in 1966 crashed the aircraft into lake ?Shtessenze? when they had a double engine failure while over West Berlin. Instead of ejecting they flew the plane clear of the city and hit the lake.

Big Jet Plane - Angus & Julia Stone... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFTvbcNhEgc It's a great album, but this song is not my favorite. They do talk about a "big jet plane", so, this reminds me of aviation!

Not explicitly aviation-related, but "What about Everything" by Carbon Leaf has a few lines about airplanes and old fighter planes
Also, how could this go unmentioned?! The music video for "Dragostea Din Tei" by Ozone is chock full of airplanes!

edit: Now that I think about it, can anybody ID the plane in that video? Based on the cockpit shots and the engines I originally thought AN-12 Cub, but I can't match the flight deck windows at 0:53s with an AN-12 or anything else I can think of :/

Nobody mentioned Pink Floyd's 'Learning to Fly'?

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone

A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Friction lock - set.Mixture - richPropellers - fully forwardFlaps - set - 10 degreesEngine gauges and suction - check
Mixture set to maximum percent - recheck
Flight instruments...
Altimeters - check both
(garbled word) - on
Navigation lights - on
Strobes - on
(to tower): Confirm 3-8-Echo ready for departure
(tower): Hello again, this is now 129.4
(to tower): 129.4. It's to go.
(tower): You may commence your takeoff, winds over 10 knots.
(to tower): 3-8-Echo
Easy on the brakes. Take it easy. Its gonna roll this time.
Just hand the power gradually, and it...
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, A state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Forget dogs and cats - Spay and neuter your liberals.

"Dallas" by Jimmy Dale Gilmore. Joe Ely also did a good version of it. Redone a few years ago by Jack Ingram.

Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night
Dallas is a jewel, Dallas is a beautiful sight
And Dallas is a jungle but Dallas gives a beautiful light
Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?

"Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)" - Woody Guthrie
"Enola Gay" - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
"The Spirit of St. Louis" - British Sea Power
"ME-262" - Blue Oyster Cult
"Bomber" - Motorhead
"Leaving On A Jet Plane" - John Denver. And many others, including a great version by Peter Paul & Mary.
"Aeroplane" - Bjork
"Aeroplane" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Paper Planes" - MIA

The best one I know was made by an obscure Belgian band called "Cinérex".

The closing track of their first album is called "Flight 001".
This is one hilarious piece of music! The concept of the song is a sleazy, loungy rythm combined with a (English speaking though native French) stewardesses intercom messages to the passengers. Soon, you find out that it's the captains birthday and a party is planned on the flight. You hear the stewardess getting drunk, the captain getting drunk and finally, things going terribly wrong.

I've tried very hard to find you a link to hear it for free, but failed.
Best I can do is a preview hereScroll to" Exit al areas" track12.

I'll try to post this song on youtube asap, to give you all the chance to enjoy the full story!

ps, about the band: maybe somebody knows the band called dEUS? The frontman of dEUS had a share in Cinérex. Maybe off topic, but the 1st album of Cinérex is a masterpiece in its own sort!
