The Masters 2011

Thu Apr 07, 2011 2:11 pm

Well, its that glorious time of year again, and my favorite weekend, The Masters. So, for my fellow golfers here, Who is your pick for the tournament? FYI, you can watch the Masters Live on espn.com or cbs sports online. So will Tiger come back and win the Masters after a year of much disappointment, or will Michelson win his 4th in 8 years? Or will someone else win?

A euro will win it this year - Kaymer, Westwood, or Poulter.

I'm pretty sure Lee Westwood is due.

Phil has a good chance, especially after the -19 show he put on during his last two rounds.

Tiger will have a top 5 finish, but nothing better. He might possibly play better if he's teamed with Ian Poulter, who dogged him earlier this week. Tiger loves to shut people up. Ian Poulter needs to be shut up most of the time.

Don't count out somebody like Matt Kucher - he's a solid golfer, no doubt. But I don't think many of the younger guys have the mental toughness it will take to hold the lead against the more seasoned golfers.

Any way it happens, I'm looking forward to it. The Masters is by far my favorite sporting event of the year.

I love love love watching the Masters, it's always a treat.

Pick for the tournament? Not Woods, not Mickelson. A few ideas I have are:

Dustin Johnson (solid 2010...not greatest Master's player, but he is due for a breakout 2011)
Martin Kaymer (can't rule out the World #1)
Nick Watney (solid Master's player in past years - in his 3 times playing, never finished below 19th)

Would love to see McIlroy win one, but he doesn't have a good track record in Augusta

Long shot: Ryo Ishikawa - played the Master's twice, cut twice, but he's a rising golfer, emotion is on his side to make his country proud in this time of grief. I like him a lot.

Not sure if I agree with you on age. Kuchar is 32:

Trevor Immelman was 28 when he won in 2008
Zach Johnson was 31 when he won in 2007
Mike Weir was 32 when he won in 2003

That's just the last 8 tournaments, ignoring the obvious freakiness of Tiger Woods, who won in 2005 (29), 2002 (26), 2001 (25) and 1997 (21)...but he's not "many younger guys", he's a freak

Long shot: Ryo Ishikawa

Before his career is over he'll own 3-4 majors.

Lee Westwood or Graham McDowell
Kaymer's another one - I think it will be a European this year.

Not to take anything away from these guys, since they're all solid golfers who I enjoy watching, but have any of them won a major since? Plus, Zach Johnson's Masters was different than most, wasn't it, in that the winning score was over par?

Regardless, you're right, Kuchar is no spring chicken. I just lump him in with the other guys because he's just recently making a name for himself.

I like that McIlroy is doing as well as he is on his first day out. I hope he can keep it going.

No offense, mate, but that didn't factor in to your original statement at all, so I didn't factor it in to mine either.

Me too. Unfortunately for him he's only 25% done and doesn't have a great record in Augusta, getting cut last year and T20 the year before in his only two times playing there. However, he ended 2010 hot so hopefully he can bring it in to 2011, I am a big fan of his.

The point that I was trying to make, and apparently didn't, was that the guys you gave as examples may be anomolies.

I may be a wrong assumption, but in my mind, it's been more seasoned guys at the top of the leader boards at the end of the tournament. I'm shooting from the hip here, so don't tank me if I'm off base.

I'll re-phrase what I was originally trying to say: This group of young guys, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, the kid with the stupid hair, I don't think these guys have the meddle to finish out strong.

Indeed, they may, but they have also won 3 of the last 8 Master's. So, while 37.5% is not a majority, I'd hardly call it an anomaly. Just my opinion. Not trying to be a dick

I do agree that, if I had to put money on it, it would be an older guy...but I like to make the bet that brings me in more money despite the smaller odds of winning

McIlroy vs. Quiros after Day 1...21 years old vs. 28 years old...who'da thought!! This could be a heck of a tournament.

Kaymer is done - can't figure the course out.
Phil can't find a fairway
Tiger has been tamed
Cink can't sink a put
Westwood needs an Eastwood script for a miracle to happen

Rory and Alberto look great but will they implode over time?

My pick is K.J. Choi, second choice would be Kuchar

I've got to root for Nashville's own Brandt Snedeker who's sitting at -3 currently.

One story from shortly before the Masters that kinda irked me would have to be this Ricky Fowler fellow... Sure he may be a good golfer (1 stroke ahead of Tiger after day 1 at -2) but he screams "douchebag"... Really you're gonna wear your hat backwards and then give lip when someone asks you to turn it around? Sorry if having class and following a dress code (it's Augusta after all) is too much to ask... Sorry buddy but the hair and stupid hat/clothes may have been cool when you were 15 but you're 22 and on the National stage during "Golf's Super Bowl"... Having one Justin Bieber is bad enough. We do NOT need another...

The play aside ... what a beuttiful golf course , immaculate .

I was pulling for Angel Cabrera "El Pato" .... he made a nice birdy run on Saturday but came up short.

Not much I wouldn't do on a fairway there.

He has a Masters. I would have enjoyed seeing Fred Couples win one or Tiger get back in the saddle and shake the monkey off his back with a victory at his favorite tournament.

Here I was smacking myself for saying this on Thursday, thinking I could have said "McIlroy, no doubt" and seemed like a genius! In the end, it was barely the best finishing position (T15) of his three Master's (previous best was T20)

It was nice seeing him play so well, but every analyst on Golf and CBS said he's too young for this tournament and would fold down the stretch. Before he's done playing I think he'll win an Open and maybe a Masters or US Open.

Wow. a thread about the Masters and not one of you mention the winner!

Well done Charl Schwartzel, he kept his head while those around him lost theirs and how fitting for a South African to win, 50 years to the day after Gary Player became the first non-American to win.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...
