Manny Ramirez, Disgrace, Retires From MLB

Fri Apr 08, 2011 10:17 pm

Wow, what a shocker   Manny has tested positive again, and despite years of trying to show us how he's "the Man", has run from the game rather than face the consequences. What a nice legacy eh? These guys are pathetic. Want to see a real man? Check out Victor Martinez's bases clearing double to welcome himself into the arms of Tigers fans today. Note to ballplayers: you don't need to go yard every 12 ABs to be a hero
Manny Ramirez retired from baseball Friday instead of facing a 100-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, according to two people briefed on the matter.

Ramirez tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug during spring training and was recently informed of the positive result, according to the people.

Manny being Manny, eh? Good riddance. I wonder if he'll make it into the HOF with this second positive test. I guess it depends on how he handles it.

In other news, the Rays are screwed. Losing Longoria and Manny is going to put a real hurt on that offense. And that franchise couldn't even fill a ballpark when they were winning a division.

From this Red Sox fan, this is the 2nd piece of good news I've heard today (the Sox beating the Yankees being the first, although having one win isn't exactly "good" news).

Good couldn't stand Manny. From a Rangers fan, it's about time the Red Sox won a game. I hate the Red Sox but I hate the Yankees even more!!!

What's up with all the hate for the Sox? Doesn't anyone love the underdog anymore??

They haven't been the underdog since they won the WS. What I hate most about Red Sox fans are that most of them are bandwagon fans and didn't know they existed until that year. Same with Yankees fans. They're horrible.

Since when are the Red Sox an underdog? In fact, the most irritating thing about Red Sox fans is that they love to pretend that they're the underdog while the team spends money like mad and has become a second version of the Yankees.

Manny has had a long and quite rich career. He is a character, too often for the worng reasons. He knew that the PED's he was taken would be caught, so he is a stupid fool. I hope he is cut off from his salary and maybe has to pay a huge fine.

Even as a Sox fan (born and raised in MA), I can't deny what Mir just wrote.

We've won 2 WS in the last decade. I think that pretty much disqualifies us for "underdog" status.

I presume this is sarcasm.

I'm gonna call BS on this one. Sox tickets sell out almost immediately and they have big tv/radio ratings, good years or bad.

Maybe the college students and yuppies down in Boston itself has a percentage of fair-weather fans, but those idiots are fickle about everything.

I've been on the bandwagon since Jim Rice and Fred Lynn were rookies in '74, the year of the famous Fisk home run in game 6 of the Series.

And yes, I still detest Cinci as a team to this day for winning game 7, although you must admit a team with Pete Rose, Joe Morgan and Johnny Bench is going to be tough to beat!

And I still hate Bucky Dent, Bill Buckner, et al.

Oh, I almost forgot: Add Roger and now Manny to that list. Both are drug-taking idoits.

I really think steroids must do something to the brain, because both truly are idiots.

As a Sox fan, it hurts to admit it, but you are correct, we have no claim to underdog status.

The current ownership regime spends money like drunken sailors.

The lack of a salary cap has really screwed up baseball, and it's a shame it seems football and basketball may end up following down that path.

That said, we do have a fair amount of homegrown talent on the team.
Inspiration, move me brightly!

When you think about the size of "Red Sox Nation", he's right - there are a lot of legitimate fans (who, believe it or not, I do respect), but there are a lot more who jumped on the bandwagon in 2004 and know crap about the team but like to act like they're the biggest fans for as long as the Sox are winning.

Same thing for the Yankees, much as I hate to admit it. Nothing I can do about it, though, except not play along with their antics.

As a life long Red Sox fan I agree 100%. I think back to 1975, 1978 ( Bucky Dent broke my heart on my 13th birthday) 1986 ( Ugh ).. 2003 ( Arron Boone..!! ) and I hear 'I've waited my whole life for this.. and they were 3 in 1986.. Sorry..!!

Yes. Very much so   If only the Giants could spend like the Red Sox do, we might win another one.

Well, too bad salary caps are nothing more than a form of cartel (which hopefully will be struck down by the judicial system in the current NFL dispute) and pretty much the most un-American thing you can imagine (trying to artificially make the Kansas City Royals equal to the Yankees or the Red Sox at the expense of the players is only passed on that list by forcing someone to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers).

As for Manny, unlike most other Red Sox fans I have mixed feelings about this. I actually kind of enjoyed watching him play - he definitely had a lot of flair - and I was kind of shocked when he got traded to the Angels in the summer of 2008. I understand he caused a lot of problems with his antics but I don't think the Sox have been the same without him (we really do need another slugger - and no, David Ortiz does not fit the bill). He was actually also a decent left-fielder when playing defense (that high-five to the fan while simultaneouly catching what would have been a home run was classic Manny).
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

You can't fault them for not being alive that long. I'd be more pissed about the people who say they've waited their whole life to see the Sox win, call themselves massive Sox fans, yet are clueless about anything pre-2003 despite being 15+ at the time.

With the Bonds trail in progress and the Ramirez retirement,I hope finally this brings an end to the cheater era in baseball..And if Bonds is found guilty,MLB ought to strip Bonds of every record he holds.Ramirez ,Bonds and Mcguire tainted a great sport and disgraced the fans and the real records holders alike.

And the sad part that these jerks is the impression they had on kids who regarded, and many still do,as they're hero's.

No, I'd pretty much agree with that statement when talking about the fans outside of Boston. Since 2004, Sox fans have popped up all over the west coast. Suddenly everyone hates the Yankees and just LOVE the Red Sox.

Well, I've hated the Yankees my whole baseball life (40+ years) and as long as they beat the Yankees, I'll love the Red Sox.

Well I'm a hardcore Rangers fan. Always have been an will be. I'm from Arlington but raised in Nashville, and I've gone to a Rangers game every year since I can remember. Being in Nashville, I have never seen anyone wearing an Rangers hats, shirts or anything until the past year. I really hope the Rangers don't start getting bandwagon fans after last year. That would just piss me off. Everyone thought we were a one year wonder but we have the best offense in the league, and alright pitching. I'm still waiting to see how Brandon Webb will do once he gets healthy. Record wise we are still the best team in the majors. GO RANGERS!!!!!!!
