F1 2011:Chinese Grand Prix.

Fri Apr 15, 2011 6:37 am

Seems like just a few days since we were watching the goings on in Sepang... oh, it was just a few days!!

Vettel and Webber a long way in front in P1

Interesting times, reading between the lines, Lewis twice in a week hinting his long term future may not be at Woking.

Thank you for opening the thread.

From what I have seen in today's practice it seems that Seb will hold his superiority over all the other drivers. If they race in the dry we can expect a Vettel-Hamilton-Busson fight for the podium.

This is why I would lke to see a good amount of rain during race time. It would change things around no doubt. I much prefer seeing F1 in the wet than F1 in the dry.

Let's see what happens during qualifying tomorrow.

I want rain on Sunday.

Vettel will dominate, Heidfeld will see his second spring, Schuhmacher will further demolish his reputation due to his failcar.

Yeah..gotta agree with Zak here..I don't see anyone challenging Vettel..Webber will somehow manage to screw up and lose a podium position, and can't see Ferrari or Mercedes GP improving. Going to be a terrible race..I think I will skip watching this one..

Button not Busson.

Silly me!

Sorry Jenson... I wasn't quite awake yet at the time I typed my post!

Wasn't so long ago that everyone wanted someone else other than Schumacher to win. Now it's happening very well.

I will probably watch the race, as I have that crazy F1 disease. Please Mercedes GP - I'm begging of you, put in a respectable performance! Malaysia was embarrassing.

Perhaps just a tad unfair, given some deficient technology put the first corner scramble beyond him... 9th or worse at lap one and facing a 4 stop strategy.. not sure how many in the field would have salvaged a 4th(damn near 3rd) out of that.

Why RBR are struggling so with KERS is an interesting question, likely only answered by Adrian Newey

It certainly looks like a boring season, but in F1 you never know. I remmbember last season on several occasions being 100% sure that Alonso was out of the picture, and yet it wasn't until the final race (and the team strategy screw up) that the WDC was decided. I hope Vettel starts losing points somewhere, if not, it will be boring.

I remember that too, that was 2003, right?
Lets hope Red Bull will get a lot of pressure very soon. Until then I wont bother watching a GP, I hate sunday strolls like the last two races.

Mercedes screwed up again so far, again they havent a winner car, even if its just slightly better than 2010 isnt yet clear. I feel a bit sorry for Schuhmacher. But its not just his car, he simply isnt the racer anymore he was around 2000 when he turned an ailing Ferrari team into the most convincing winning team ever seen in F1.

Not only Mercedes. The engine is not the only problem. The whole car and it's aerodynamics need a lot of improvement. The car isn't good enough - yet.

I don't to be honest. He left the F1 as a legend with so many championships and many other achievements. He should've left it like that. But no, he needs to come back - a lot older and not with his old team around him. So he basically starts from the beginning...

I fully agree with that. When I heard he would come back with Merc I thought it was a joke first. Its still a joke, just one that became reality. Mercedes and Schumacher are both damaging their reputation.

Depends on which way you look at it, I suppose. If you're a fan of the driver/team dominating, then it's never boring, in my opinion. Vettel is one of my favourite drivers, and I hope he continues to dominate this season. His first title season was dogged by many mistakes he shouldn't have made, and some say he was lucky to have won because he never lead the championship until the final race, but if he backs it up with another title after a dominant season, maybe it'll make his critics take notice.

Williams are my favourite team, and when they used to dominate in the early to mid 90s, I never once thought it was boring.

I was watching Practice 2... that Vettel front wing is just so low....   also interesting is the back exhaust, a big oval just infront of the rear wing, whilst others have it lower or even more forward (like Renault).

One shot also showed loads of tyre debris on one of the turns outside of the race line, we might have another 3+ stops race, unless it rains.

I was under the impression RBR had a blown diffuser.. in fact I believe they pioneered it. I thought it might have been some kind of vent to push out hot air.

Will Hammy go to Red Bull?

Lewis Hamilton has shot down McLaren-Mercedes team principal Martin Whitmarsh's stated desire to keep hold of him for the long-term in F1, revealing that he doesn't see 'any attraction whatsoever' to staying with one team forever and claiming 'loyalty has its limits'

http://www.crash.net/f1/news/168395/...ss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss

I wonder if he will join RBR if they make him an offer?

He won't go to Ferrari until Alonso is there for sure. Williams would be an obvious choice, but they're not that strong like some time ago. Marketing-wise RBR would be a good choice, but he'd have to cope with Vettel also being there, unless V goes to Ferrari and a position would be open.

Could that airflow directed onto the lower part of the rear wing have such a downforce effect ? They have an excellent aero package definately, the car is an evolution of last year's. Plus the chassis is in dark colours so it's kind of difficult to spot some novelties in design.

I can't explain how it all works, but formula1.com might. Specifically this article

http://www.formula1.com/news/technical/2011/844/842.html

Those drawings imply to me that not 100% of the exhaust is being used on the diffuser which might explain the large hole at the back of the car. But it seems to me if you're using some of the exhaust then you might as well use it all. But then you might not to keep some of the other components cool and stop them from failing.

Since I moved to Montreal, following the beginning of the season has been quite complicated for me. I have not watched one single race and will not be able to watch this one either

I guess I'll come back to the F1 thread more regularly once GPs come to Europe...

Is it just me or is there something curious in RBR ability to consistently give Vettel a car with working KERS yet just as consistently deny that same capability to Webber.
Having said that using some soft tyres in Q1 might have got MW into Q2, sure using up a set of softs may place you at a disadvantage but starting 18th is surely a bigger disadvantage.

No no no. This is tricky. 0.7 advantage over Button ? And that long sit in the car after qualy.... strange. Seemed that everybody just let it go and saved the tyres.

Webber, what a mess of qualification, Petrov hmmm, spoiled it for Heidfeld, why was Renault so hesitant to get the cars out ? Schumi again not lucky. Rosberg on the contrary. Good runs from Toro Rosso.

The key on Sunday is to get a good start, Lewis and Alonso will try to do that.

Vettel's KERS wasn't working last weekend either. It's a gremlin that Red Bull need to get sorted as soon as possible, because this could be their downfall.

I think that's just stating the obvious, really. Everybody will be trying for a good start. Having said that, it's not impossible to overtake at Shanghai, but it's also quite possible that if Vettel gets ahead at the first corner, he'll stay there for the rest of the race unless he makes a mistake or there is a mechanical problem.

That is interesting. Though if it happens I feel somewhat bad for Massa. He was so close to win the WDC. I doubt that Massa will be able to raise again. Seems that he has passed his peak.

One of the most spectacular drives I've seen in my life by Weber, 18th to 3rd, no KERS, in the dry, seven seconds behind the race winner. Astonishing! Superb!
