Should I Buy Portal 2

Tue Apr 26, 2011 5:16 pm

Anyone have this game yet, looks pretty awesome from the YouTube videos and most reviews are pretty glowing.

The only problem is that I think my poor computer is deficient on the specs.

I have an old Dell Latitude D630, T7100 Core 2 Duo @ 1.8mhz, 1 gb of ram and WinXP Pro SP3. With integrated graphics... Intel GMA something something.

The specs are listed as either a 3.0GHz single core or a 2.0GHz dual core and a DirectX9 GPU (which your's should be), so you *might* be able to pull it off on low settings. My old machine had similar specs and ran Portal1 and I don't think the game engine has changed *that* much. I think it's still running on Source but I'm not 100% sure. It would be nice if Steam had a trial version to test. I'm guessing you don't have an Xbox or PS3 you could get it on instead?

I had portal 1 which was (or still is) EPIC. I suggest you try that one first, specially if you want 2 to make any sense.

That's an understatement.

This right here is your problem. You don't have a real graphics card. I guarantee it will be pretty much unplayable even in low settings. Portal 1 MIGHT be doable, but I don't know if the steam installer checks for a video card or not, some games just wont install or run if you don't have one (thought its been a while since I came across a game that did that)

The annoying thing is that I ordered my laptop back when that particular model first debuted... then one month later the separate graphics card became an option. Either way it is a nearly 4 year old laptop and I am probably better off buying an XBOX if I want to play games.

I MUCH rather do gaming on a (desktop) computer for a very long list of reasons. Do you have a desktop available? They are much cheaper and easier to upgrade than a laptop.

I'd say upgrade your laptops graphics card, but you can't, not in your model at least.

Maybe look in craigslist for some cheap gaming computer?
