Food You Refuse To Eat?

Sun May 15, 2011 12:28 am

For me, I avoid spinach.. I refuse to consume it. Somewhat too soft soft and smells awful.

Brains. I'm no zombie.

Don't like testicles either.

These are the only two I've been offered that I have quite simply refused to eat. In the countryside people usually eat every part of the animal. Although a country-boy myself, I have my limits.

cabbage

I cannot stand it; Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and so on are not for me. I have however tried Kimchi, which was OK.

Whenever I'm invited to dinner at a friend's house and they ask me if there's anything I don't eat, my stock answer is always "fish and offal"...other than that I'm good to go. Although there are some vegetables that I'm not too keen on...I can't eat cauliflower no matter how it's cooked, and don't get me started on brussel sprouts!

I am of course talking about stuff that would generally be served on a standard menu though. I think if I were to be offered such things as monkey brains, sheep's eyes or kangaroo testicles I think I might just make my excuses and leave. Not really likely to happen in the home counties of England though!

I put liver, kidneys and octopus in the same category; it is food I can eat, but I really won't enjoy it. It's somewhere north of terrible, but not far.

This is food essentially "on notice", since I might actually learn to like it in the future - but there's just something about it that makes me feel icky.

Seriously though, pig brains and sheep testicles are eaten by some people in my countriside. Oh I want to add eyes. I don't eat eyes. Tried it once, and decided this was not for me.

(yes we eat all parts of the animal in Spain!)

Food? Refuse? Eat?

Those words don't go together.

I'll try anything once.

Though I do shy away from liver. Don't like the texture. But, if it's served, I'll eat it.

Bizarre foods is one of my favorite shows, he's a great host! He literally eats everything that is served to him! Though IIRC, he doesn't drink alcohol right? I'm surprised he maintains his weight (IK he's a little bit on the heavy side) ... but considering the amount of food he eats! and also that Man V. Food guy. I'm a fan of both. Unlike that foul-mouthed Anthony Bourdain. I'm also a fan of Samantha Brown.

There is one item I refuse to eat. Actually I was in a restaurant one time where the table next to me ordered this item and I got up and walked out.

There it was, a beautiful evening in Vietnam. My friends and I had settled down at our table in the restaurant and were excited for some good food and good company. At the table next to us I heard a slight commotion as the dinner guests were choosing their particular meat for their dinner. My phobia/fear is snakes. And when the cook/waiter held up 3 or 4 live snakes for the dinner guests to choose which one they wanted all I could do was exit that restaurant as fast as I could. I can't remember what I ended up eating that night hehehehe.

Sour Cream. There's just something foul about it. Also, boiled or fried eggs...I can not stand the smell. I enjoy omelettes however with diced ham and a bit of cheese. I recently became a fan of asparagus...I have that as a side dish when I make salmon. And I believe I had brussels sprouts at Emeril's restaurant or somewhere similar, and they were great; I'm a fan now.

I'll try anything once unless it's ultra-exotic like brains or testicles.

And I do agree, Andrew Zimmern is a champ. Man V Food is amazing in a terrifying way...I just saw an episode where he drank 150(!) ounces of milkshake in under 30 minutes. He must go to the gym a lot between episodes!

Brussel sprouts and asparagus. Seems to be a fad here in YVR at the moment in many of the trendy sports bar kinda places to serve a steak with 'fresh seasonal vegetables'. Always turns out to be asparagus - way to ruin a meal...

1. Celery. Can't stand the smell or the taste. The only time I'll have celery is if it's been slow cooked to a mush in a stew or a soup, and must be chopped very, very finely.

2. Offal - all except for beef tripe, which is one of the Cantonese dim sum dishes.

3. Snails - never tried it, but the thought of it disgusts me

4. Anything still alive, or anything raw except for oysters, salmon or tuna.

5. Grapefruit. Doctor's orders, as it interferes with Tacrolimus.

6. Bitter melon. Quite common in Chinese cuisine, but I can't stand it.

7. Chilli. I can't stand anything spicy.

Healthy food. Anything that is low this no that, reduced so and so. I am militantly against eating healthy foo, and the health craze because with the exception of some foreign/foreign style dishes 99% of food that is "healthy" tends to taste like steamed cardboard. So basically a lot of veggies, and anything low sodium i avoid. Kinda sucks but for me healthy and tasty are two mutually exclusive terms for food.

Bananas
Coffee

Other things I'm not keen on, such as blue cheese, but I'll put up with it, eg in a leek and stilton soup.

I've never been offered brains, eyes, testicles or other things like that. But I would leave immediately, if one would offer me this stuff. Sorry, for me this is not even food, it just makes me want to vomit.

Normal stuff I don't like/ refuse to eat:
- any kind of intestines
- asparagus
- artichoke
- chicken
- fish
- other seafood
- snails
- frogs, turtles, cats and dogs
- horsemeat

I don't like most seafood, but I COULD eat it if I really have to. There is only one thing that almost guarantees a vomit session very quickly after consumption;

CORIANDER (or Cilantro)

Since one big bite of a huge Nepalese piece of grilled meat that was covered in this vile little green f-ing herb in London in 2001 it has become quite a problem. It was in front of my new boss and his boss and I actually vomitted a little in my mouth, luckily they were in a discussion, so I had to swallow that sweet sour cocktail again or splash it over the table. I swallowed and since then coriander is beyond off limits. The rare cases it is in a meal and I don't know about it are grand moments of dissapointment, especially when I'm hungry

Almost everything else I can learn to it, and in some cases even start to like very much (ie; smoked eel).

Anything from the sea, anything with cheese (save pizza and cheesecake since the taste of cheese is not noticeable), and many vegetables. It's kinda annoying since I limit many choices. If I were ever stranded on a deserted island, I would die. I simply refuse to eat seafood.

I will only mention food that I am likely to have to deal with.

Liver : my parents love it, not me.

Tripes and andouille/andouillette : the poo smell is disgusting.

I'm told that my Italian grandmother makes a good veal brain but I have never seen it, and I'm not sure I would try.

Live oysters : I just can't get around to eat something moving. I have no problem with cooked ones, but it's not common.

Snails : I have never tried and am not too sure I want to.

Periwinkles : I ate them as a child, but now I can't, it looks so wrong.

I had the opportunity to eat cooked insects and I found it edible, almost good.

For those who mention Brussels sprouts, were they cooked the right way ? If they're overcooked, they smell like sulfur.

Not even considering snail, octopus, and other exotic animals... Normal fare that I refuse to eat:
-Mushrooms. I will not eat this, even with a knife at my throat.
-Sushi. This, however, can be eaten if there is a knife at my throat.... Never willingly, though.
-Liver and other "odd" parts of an animal.

And I've never been a huge sea food fan; I'll eat it, but, I will never sit down and order it.

Most people think I'm crazy when I say something like the above. I add lamb to the list since I can't stand the smell.

One food I try to avoid like plague is raw soy. Things like tofu, soy milk, and saw burgers have estrogenic and toxic effects and are harmful not only for guys but women too. Fermented soy (soy sauce, tempeh, miso, and natto) doesn't create the same problem, but I still avoid it when I can.

Without a doubt, it's Liver. Just the smell alone is enough to make me heave. I'm lucky in that my gf loves it but won't cook it at home and doesn't order it when we're out because of the effect it has on me. Second is Corriander/Cilantro.....I don't know what it is about that plant but again if I accidentally bit into a dish that has that in it you'd laugh at the face I pulled as I was heading somewhere to remove it from my mouth. Finally,...Sprouts! To me they're like boiled, bagged farts. No thanks.

Mushrooms! Yuck! How could anyone eat those horrible, awful, foul things!! It doesn't matter if even the smallest amount of mushroom is shredded into a dish, I can tell. To me, the taste of mushrooms in a dish makes it taste like whatever it is has gone a bit off. And on their own? I feel ill at the very thought.

Cilantro too, it just doesn't seem to taste like it should go with anything. And it's not good on it's own either.

Oh, and my least favourite food in the whole entire world..
Pickled Beets! Even the thought of these things makes me want to hurl. I think they taste like what I imagine rotten dirt would. I hate them so much, that if someone even eats them in front of me, I feel ill.

I can't even imagine a dish involving all three of these things!

Strong cheese is at the top of my list. Goat cheese especially. Also to a lesser extant blue cheese, Brie, Camembert. I will eat these things if forced. But it eclipses the other tastes and leaves me grossed out for a while after. Same with olives.
I do like aged Gouda and certain other cheeses that are more nutty and "sharp" than "stinky"...
Not a liver fan.

Funny, there are some foods on people's lists here that I would really _hate_ to give up.
I love cilantro (it is essential to most of my favorite cuisines--I can't imagine Thai, Indian, Lebanese, Georgian, Mexican food without it, etc.)
Love Octopus
Love Celery
Wouldn't want to give up mushrooms either! Especially Porcini or Shitake...my kids won't touch mushrooms right now, which is frustrating.

But anyway...taste is taste...

For those that don't like Brussels Sprouts by the way: I didn't either till I discovered how awesome they are when roasted--especially with Rosemary. Yummmm.
